I just saw the trailer and watched an interview with Mr. Boon, and I am actually a bit excited for this game. Anyone else looking forward to this title?

Game Blog / Mario Wii Titles Among Most Tiring Games
« on: April 18, 2008, 03:43:49 PM »

Nintendic.com listed five Wii games that have tired them out the most while playing. Out of the five, Mario Party 8 and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games earn spots. I do agree with them about Mario & Sonic; I remember being a bit sore and sweaty after that one!

Game Blog / Black Wii Wheel Out in the Wild?
« on: April 18, 2008, 03:24:53 PM »

A while back, The team behind Mario Kart Wii made mention of a Black Wii Wheel (as well as a Gold one) they had created but not intended to release... Or was it released? The above picture is from a NeoGAF user who claims that he has an official Wii Wheel in black. He doesn't mention where it came from, meaning as of now the likelihood of it being available through retail is low. Hard to deny one fact: That is the Wii Wheel, and it is indeed black!

Game Blog / Super Mario Bros. Oil Painted
« on: April 18, 2008, 02:51:43 PM »

Flickr user GasPanic has added a Super Mario Bros. Boxart Oil Painting to his account, and it's pretty impressive. Not sure what the scale of the painting is, but it seems to be large and is definitely in charge. Good job Mario painter!

Game Blog / What Mario Would Drive IRL
« on: April 18, 2008, 12:24:35 AM »

Gamedaily.com made a list for the cars they think Mario and friends would drive in real life, from Mario in a Ferrari Enzo to Bowser in a Chevy Suburban. I'm sure us hardcore Mario fans could come up with better choices, don't you? What's silly is that they gave Peach a Pink Cadillac, when we all know that's clearly Wario's ride!

Game Blog / Nintendo Ignoring Mario Galaxy?
« on: April 18, 2008, 12:04:14 AM »

Synergy(noun): the working together of mulitple things (muscles or drugs for example) to produce an effect greater than the sum of their individual effects.

That's what the writer from Kombo is looking for from Nintendo. Some kind of Synergy between the big three Mario titles released recently, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Mario Kart Wii. Not to ruin the entire article, but he would have liked Nintendo to include references between the three titles so that Mario doesn't seem so distant in each. An example he gives would be adding a Galaxy-like move for Mario in Brawl, or a Galaxy dedicated MKWii level.

Read the article to see his full explanation. It has some inaccuracies, but nonetheless, you'll see his point at the end.

Game Blog / SSBB Brawls Its Way to Number One in March (US, CA)
« on: April 17, 2008, 11:40:59 PM »

In March, Nintendo again defined industry momentum in both home and portable video games sales, according to the independent NPD Group, which monitors retail activity in the video game industry. More than 720,000 Wii™ systems sold in March, representing the highest monthly sales total outside of holiday months (November or December) to date, while Nintendo DS™ also sold through nearly 700,000 systems.

Nintendo also finished with the top-selling U.S. game of March. Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which launched March 9, came in at No. 1 with 2.7 million units sold.

“Nintendo systems represented 58 percent of all video game hardware sold in March in the United States,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “We expect our momentum to continue with big upcoming game launches like Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit.”

Other March U.S. statistics, according to NPD, include:

 * Three Wii games finished in the top 10, including Super Smash Bros. Brawl at No. 1, Wii Play™ at No. 4, and Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock at No. 7.
* Nintendo DS has now sold more than 19 million units in the United States alone since it launched in November 2004.

Also, in Canada, Super Mario Galaxy landed the number three spot, while Super Smash Bros. Brawl took number one, of course. Read more here

Game Blog / It Begins: Mario Cakes
« on: April 17, 2008, 11:12:23 PM »

Thanks to Anthony D. for the idea!

Some of us aren't familiar with the craze of Game Cakes, so allow me to enlighten you. For about half a year or so, blog kotaku.com has been chronically posting video game inspired cakes. Now, these aren't your run of the mill, cookie cut-out cakes. No, these are epic cakes, ones that require so much skill you can call them works of art. That's about all there is to it.

What we have here is a few Mario Game Cakes I've found just by doing a quick Google Search. No rhyme or reason, just something fun to get your weekend started out right. Hopefully this will start some sort of weekly deal. If you like the feature, I'll keep doing it. If not, it'll disappear faster than Mario's Cousin Stanley!

Click over to "Discuss in the Fungi Forums" to see the first few cakes!

Game Blog / Four Tracks That Should Have Been in MKWii
« on: April 17, 2008, 11:11:16 AM »

Wild Tyme blog has a list up of four tracks that the writer, Mike Leader, felt should have been in Mario Kart Wii. Among the four, he calls for a generic Mario Galaxy level, and a Virtual Console track. I think that would be have been pretty neat, if done the way he described it. Check out his other choices, and feel free to list some tracks you wanted to see!

Game Blog / 1up.com: Super Mario Land "Explosively Awful"
« on: April 16, 2008, 09:09:09 PM »

If there ever was a "top" list I would disagree with whole-heartedly, it's this one. 1up.com has compiled a list of games that, in their mind, are the most awful launch titles of all time. Three Mario character titles make the list:  Donkey Kong Jr. Math, Super Mario Land, and Super Mario Advance. DK Jr. Math, okay, I could see that as being a bad idea for a launch title. Super Mario Advance I am on the fence about, considering it was a port. The game scored high amongst reviewers, and I personally had that game in my GBA for a long time.

However, I have to "explosively" disagree with Super Mario Land. Sure, it's no Super Mario Bros. 3, but it's definitely not a bad title at all. It was fun to play, challenging, and had a good soundtrack. I'd venture to say Luigi's Mansion is a better choice for this list than Super Mario Land.

Read on for 1up.com's attempt to legitimize their choices, and let me know what you think about them in the Fungi Forums.

Game Blog / Rumor: Paper Mario DS Coming in July
« on: April 16, 2008, 02:23:48 PM »

Wondering what's next for the portly plumber after he races circles around your living room? Korean internet retailers have the inside track apparently, and are listing Paper Mario DS with a July 2008 release. No confirmation of this being a legit offering, or just wishful thinking. Once official word breaks, I'll let you know!

UPDATE: After reading some more into this via other reports, it seems this would be a port available only in Korea. Check out more here.

Game Blog / The Wii Wheel Hard to Find (in Japan)
« on: April 16, 2008, 12:24:45 PM »

Akihabara retailers are having a bit of trouble keeping the official standalone Mario Kart Wii wheel on store shelves. Fortunately, Datel Japan's Racing Handle is also being stocked, which sells for less and comes in white or black. Why all the trouble over the Wii Wheel, I have no clue. All I know is that I want that table cover for my next birthday party.

Game Blog / Club Nintendo Headed to Australia
« on: April 16, 2008, 12:18:36 PM »

Why Nintendo of America doesn't start some kind of rewards club is a puzzle to me. While they do have mynintendo.com, the goodies we get here in no way compare to the stream of awesome that is Club Nintendo. Aussie gamers can now also partake in the service, which allows consumers to redeem points for exclusive Nintendo spoils and Wii Points. This news comes courtesy of The Age's Screenplay, a blog that made the discovery while going through their advance copy of Mario Kart Wii.

Game Blog / Nintendo World Store MKWii Launch Event
« on: April 16, 2008, 12:05:14 PM »

Nintendo will be hosting a pre-launch day event to celebrate the release of Mario Kart Wii. On Saturday, April 26th, head down to the Nintendo World Store and you'll be treated to what will no doubt be a very exciting and fun time. Fans of all ages are invited to the party, which starts at 2pm and ends at 6pm. For those of you that can't attend because of the distance, be satisfied in knowing I as well will be outside of a GameStop on Sunday morning, greeted by a half-awake pimply shell of a man. For the rest, enjoy the party!
