I have known about Mario since 1988 when I got my NES for xmas. I had the NES Action pack which included Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt. Duck Hunt was a very good in its day. But my interest for Mario soared in 1992 when I got my Super Nintedo console with Super Mario World which is still best Mario game around for me. Even though my SNES is starting to show its age now :). I tried the world of Sonic on the sega platforms but his series of games were nowhere near as much fun as Mario's game are - even now.
