Author Topic: Oh my God! They actually made a Mario anime once.  (Read 3308 times)

« on: May 24, 2002, 10:08:02 PM »
Believe it or not, while browsing through Yahoo Japan, I've found a website containing old Famitsu Articles. One of them articles actually mentioned a Super Mario Anime called Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyuushutsu Daisakusen (The Mission to save Princess Peach), which was released in 1986 (the same year in which the real SMB2 was released for the FDS). The anime was a collaboration between Grouper Production and Hori Kikaku Seisaku. Mario's voice was done by Tooru Furuya (who did Yamcha's voice in Dragon Ball), while Yu Mizushima. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any screencaps for the anime (it has been out of print for awhile), except for the Famitsu scan, but believe me it does exist. There's even an entry for it in the Japanese Movie Database.

Yes, I already knew about the Super Mario Manga series. There are actually several Japanese comics based on Super Mario Bros. (and other videogames). In fact I've found a Japanese website dedicated to official Mario manga called the Mario Comic Library.

http://maclib.hoops.ne.jp/

The two longest-running manga series based on Mario were Yukio Sawada's Super Mario-Kun series (published by Shogakukan) and Kazzuki Motoyama's various Super Mario books (published by Kodansha Comics).

BTW, they're not called anime comics, they're called manga (or just plain Japanese comics). The term "Anime Comics" is only used when reffering to a comic that uses cels from an anime.

Yes, Mr. Know-it-all. There are yon-koma books in Japan for just about every videogame.

"so don't call me Mr. Know-it-all for no reason!"
Whatever, you're cool.

Apparently, the Super Mario Anime wasn't even released on video, thus increasing it's rarity to 500%.
