Chupperson: To English people it doesn't look like "maar". It just looks like Mario. Said quickly, as it's spelt.

Ma (as in Mat)
Rio.

Three quick syllables.

Cheers,

Matt

Well, everyone who talks about it here in England says it with the short vowel.

Ma-ree-oh.

It seems to be an England / America difference in pronunciation, and I don't understand why this should be.

Is the "r" part of the 1st or 2nd syllable? For me, it's part of the 2nd. Saying the first syllable is "Mar" is ambiguous, it doesn't say how you pronounce the "a".

I haven't heard ANYONE pronounce it Mair-ee-o. I've always thought everyone says it using either the "Mat" vowel or the "father" vowel. Most other normal English people I've heard that say it, usually say it using the "Mat" vowel. Maybe it's different over in America? However, I don't see why it should be.

To me, the R is part of the second syllable. It's Ma (as in Mat) - Ree - Oh. Some people seem to stretch the R across both syllables, which requires effort for me to do.

How do we pronounce vowels differently in this context? The "a" in "mat" is simply the short "a" sound.

It's a pineapple and grapefruit crush. I dunno, it's just one I thought of. You're not going to tell me they don't sell it in America, are you? I thought it was made by one of the big companies like Coke or Pepsi. The slogan is "Totally Tropical Taste".

I've just remembered something else on-topic. Our modern-day televisions accept signals in both PAL and NTSC, so the standard matters less these days, unless your TV is ten years old or something.

I usually call it what it is, e.g. Coke, Lilt, Sprite, Tango etc. My mum calls them fizzy drinks.

Seriously, though, why can't the companies go for simultaneous release, like they did with Sonic 2? And they wonder why normal English fans get ****ed off with games companies. The delays for games such as Banjo-Tooie, and for the Gamecube, of about half a year, are unacceptable. It doesn't take that long.

But our countries are very similar in many ways, much more so than say the French and Germans (ugh).

Frostbite: You know England was here first, and colonised America. I wish there had never been that stupid War of Independence. Anyway, we DO speak mostly the same language. I regard the French and Germans as foreigners, not the Americans. I know Americans who'd say the same thing about English people - Americans are just a different type of English people really. Hehe...

Why? I don't regard America as foreign as they speak the same language there as we do. England is the original mother country, anyway!

Well, apparently England is the 3rd largest consumer of video games and consoles, with Japan and America being first and second respectively. Hence there is no reason why we should be bundled with Europe, and made to wait with them for their silly translations and all the rest of it. We should SPLIT from Europe in terms of video game releases, and join with America.

And the CONSOLE, or the wire from the console to the TV, should handle the different type of signal.

They shouldn't need to convert all the games. Signal from the console to the television should be dealt with by the console, not by the game. It would save a lot of hassle and delays.

This doesn't explain why we have to wait for GBA games, either. They are virtually identical from continent to continent.

But England was here first, and America is one of England's colonies. So theoretically England should be first on the list.

I preferred their voices and traits from the cartoons. The ones in the games sound more like parodies.
