Site Discussion / Re: Sigh... where is everyone?

I visit another message board concerning NPR's Sunday puzzle, and it sees weekly posts and replies based on solving the puzzle. I think the forums lack the same incentive to revisit as regularly. There was always the appeal of socializing with the forum regulars, but I think many regulars have simply aged out of perusing forums (being an adult takes up so much of my time!) And without a steady influx of newer members, it makes sense that posts nowadays are few and far between.

Guess I'll have to search for people on Facebook. :p

LD that looks like a wedding band. Should the staff wedding poll be updated?

It's-a me, Markio! (I honestly don't think I've ever used that line). Just dropping in to say hello and see how things are going. :)

I joined in 2003 when I turned 13 and spent basically all of high school here. I left here around college age in order to focus more on school and real life issues (like seeking employment, pursuing higher education, dating, etc). This forum provided me both a real sense of community, as well as a stepping stone toward independence as a teenager. It's simultaneously comforting and unsettling to see that this place still exists, which all my teenage ramblings still viewable for the judgment of others. XD

A lot of the current news focuses on how politically divided the US is, and it got me missing the heterogeneity of this forum, with members as far away as Montana and North Carolina! XD I'm also planning a Mario halloween costume, and so I felt compelled to revisit to check on things.

Currently I am still in California, am engaged to a guy I've been with for 7 years, and am currently studying to get my license in clinical psychology. My fiancee did not play video games growing up, and trying to get him to play Mario Kart 64 was like teaching a toddler to hold a spoon ("Hold the A button to move!" "What's an A button???"). So I guess I just miss you all and stuff. Hope you're all doing OK!

I remember when I joined in 2003, I waited until I turned 13 to lawfully join the forum.  How ironic, considering how rebellious I acted over the years...

Hooray for Us!

General Chat / Re: Is there a "right" way to ask someone out?

If someone really liked you, they'd probably be willing to overlook the odd/strange/less appealing way that you asked them out.

Within reason, I mean.  Someone will probably stop liking you if you ask them out at gunpoint.

I now work at a different coffee shop across town and take the night bus to work, which means I get up at 3:30am on days that I open the store.  Opening shifts last until 10:15, so usually I would return home and take a nap in the middle of the day, then get up and shower and spend the rest of the day like normal.

However, this week we've lost a few of our opening staff (resignation and a vacation), so I've had to get up at 3:30am every day.  Rather than nap after work during midday, I've committed to staying awake all day and just going to bed earlier.  This seems to work better, as I'm not really capable of sleeping soundly in the middle of the day (I just end up dreaming I'm still at work taking people's orders, which is really depressing).

Have you gone to China on vacation?  Or is it related to a job or study abroad program or something?

I remember having a phone call with TEM and he confirmed I was a tenor.

Wait, are we supposed to lose faith in humanity because of the ensuing discussions?

"You don't know, Markio?  Ugh, I'm losing faith already..."

"The fact that you invest so much of your faith in someone you barely know off the internet makes me lose faith."

"The fact that you're a hypocrite makes me lose even more faith."

"Your liberal use of the word 'faith' is causing me mild rage." - Sapphira

The fact that hypothetical Sapphira used the word 'liberal' amuses me and thus restores my faith myself.

Today Prop 8 was struck down by the US Supreme Court.  Marriage is legal again for same-sex couples in California!

The Supreme Court also struck down DOMA.  I always think of "Burrito Supreme" from Taco Bell when I hear "Supreme Court."  And I visualize sour cream.  I haven't been to a Taco Bell in over a decade...  What was I talking about?  Oh yeah, gay marriage yes.

Are you the girl on the left or the right?

I was seeing this guy for about a month.  Lately I realized that I'm not ready to pursue a serious relationship with him because I don't feel confident with where I'm at in my life.  The guy asked me on Monday where we stood, and I was honest with him.  He broke down and was kind of a wreck, crying and not wanting to hear me say any of it.  It was rather troubling, considering it was my first break-up.

He called me like three times the next day, and admitted to me that he's been very depressed (nearly suicidal) for the past six months, and that his time with me was one of the only things making him happy.  That bothered me because it made certain that he was dependent on me for happiness, rather than interdependent.  I'd rather someone is with me by choice, not out of necessity.

Thankfully, he has scheduled an appointment to see a psychiatrist.  He used to be on medication and never renewed his prescription, which is why he has probably been so depressed for all these months.

Could it be that your formerly gay friend is using your crush as his beard?

I've started dating a guy in his late 30s.  We don't quite pass the Standard Creepiness Rule (Age/2 + 7).  So far our dates have consisted of dinner/movies, and cuddle-sleepovers.  I'm trying not to fall for him too quickly until I know him better.  In the meantime I'm enjoying his company.
