The Mario franchise and its spinoffs are aimed for all ages.  For a while, the only games rated above E that you can play as Mario in are the SSB games.  SSBM was rated T (although I thought that was a little high), and SSBB will most likely be rated T as well.

I read on Wikipedia (in the article on DK64) that SSBM was rated T for violence with high-quality graphics. So it does sound like the next one will be rated T also.

No they don't! We don't want mario games to look like splinter cell!
Agreed.

I wonder about anyone who has something against the Mario Sunshine look. Even if it looks somewhat different from the original games, that doesn't necessarily make it bad (though I prefer the original look over it), and the fact that it doesn't have dark colors like "mature" games doesn't make it "kiddy" or "hippie" (ugh) in the least.

Also, I don't think that Shadow the Hedgehog sucks. I think it's a cool game. I may sound like I'm contradicting myself about "mature" games, but really, StH is not at all like the M-rated crap that's so popular these days, and the content is innocuous enough for my mom, who's strict about VG content, to allow it in the house.

I probably imagined DK as 20-ish, or maybe a few years older.

Diddy I imagined as probably younger, but not much younger.

Incidentally, Tiny Kong from DK64 is supposed to be Dixie Kong's teenage younger sister, and Dixie is probably about the same age as Diddy, since she's his girlfriend. I don't know if that has anything to do with this, but I'm throwing it out there just in case it is.

I found that email last night, but didn't feel like reviving this topic.

Pretty funny, as usual.

SMW was technically Super Mario Bros. 4. I think the working title of the game was SMB4.

It makes tons more sense to me for the DK in DKC to be the grandson of the original one. For one thing, Cranky is so old. If he's just DK's dad, you would probably expect DK to be around 30 at the very least (that's going by human years, but they're cartoon characters, not real apes). I'm pretty sure DK is younger than that.

Also, in DKC, the first Rare DK game, Cranky is supposed to be DK's grandpa, and in DKC2 Cranky (apparently mistakenly) calls himself Diddy's grandpa. Though the latter thing is most likely a mistake, it seems to indicate that DK is Cranky's grandson because DK and Diddy seem to be from the same generation (correct me if I'm wrong about that).

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I have a bias against DK64 (which I think is the only game where Cranky refers to DK as his son); it's my favorite game in the series! But I have to take one of the positions due to Rare's inconsistency, and I happen to think that the grandson theory is the more likely one (and I also can't really picture the annoying little DK Jr. in GBDK (DK '94) as the Donkey Kong of DKC.

Yes, that is probably true.

Now that I've thought about it more, I agree with neotev. I oughtn't to have said those people sucked, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THEY ACTUALLY DO OR NOT, AND REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THEY DESERVED IT, since it's uncharitable to say such a thing about anyone, even one's enemies.

I will put my position more mildly: I absolutely cannot stand Mario haters, I have a rock-bottom low opinion of them, and their hatred of Mario is totally unjustified, for the simple reason that hating an unobjectionable fictional character, as opposed to being merely uninterested in that character, cannot have any foundation and is obviously due to prejudice of some sort.

Oh, yeah, and it's also ridiculous for someone even to be merely uninterested in a character if the only reason that person is uninterested is because the character isn't in a "mature" (aka immoral) game.

I agree that DBZ is stupid.

But I still would buy the game if it had a DBZ character in it.

The robot looks like a giant Snifit.

There's apparently air in this galaxy, as all explosions and every other sound effect can be heard.

Utterly. Astounding.
