Well, Chupperson, I pretty much stopped listening to what you have to say about gender roles after your extremely casual dismissal of what I said here.

Hirocon: What cultural basis is there for a theme about a powerful woman saving a helpless man from danger? That sort of theme may be a feminist's utopia, but it sure as heck has no base in nature.

I like Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog also, though I like the Sonic Adventures better, especially SA2B. I've never played the Dreamcast versions (and I've never played a dreamcast either).

Mario was suppose to be 18 in DK Arcade. (Don't ask about that stache way back then though)

...What?!

Where on earth did you hear that? I find it impossible to believe for a second.

Leave the guy alone, we got him to try the game, and if he likes it he will thank us,if he doesn't he will stand by his word.

That's basically what I was trying to say, though I don't know if I was very clear.

I'm against R-rated movies too, generally speaking. There are exceptions, such as The Passion of the Christ, but I loathe movies that are rated R for sexual content or gratuitous violence and gore.

I don't like female roles in video games that are overtly un-feminine. In my view Samus falls into that category, but I don't find games like the Metroid series particularly obnoxious (there are far more feministic game series out there).

Worse than games in the above category, of course, are the "sex-object" portrayals of women in video games like Tomb Raider.

I wonder about anybody who finds the "damsel in distress" theme offensive. What on earth could you find wrong with it, besides the fact that it doesn't fit in with feministic views?

And regarding the first post: I nearly always discredit stuff I read if I see the word "sexist" used seriously. "Sexist" is almost only used by feministic-viewed people now, even if what it describes technically is sexist.

And anybody who calls ME a sexist dies. I'm a traditionalist, NOT a sexist. I respect women a lot, but also respect traditional sex roles.

I somehow don't think that Mario could possibly have been more than 10 years younger at the time of the original Donkey Kong.

This argument is confusing to no end. But really, I'm rather surprised that most people here seem to think that any solid theory can be created concerning this. It would be idle to pretend that the continuity wasn't screwed up by Rare and/or post-Rare Nintendo, and therefore it is only to be expected that one can't make things make perfect sense now. It's just something that can't be helped, it seems.

I love it.  It's like a cross between SMB3 and SMW without flying or Yoshi.  My favorite powerup is the mini mushroom.  I wish there was a mini mushroom house.  I also wish there was a practical way to play it on my TV.  My wife and brothers like SMB games, but doesn't like playing on handhelds.  So far I've been to every world, beat World 8 and completed everything in Worlds 1-3.  I only have 2 more Star Coins to get in World 4, but am missing several levels/exits in World 7.  I wish I'd noticed the menu change after beating World 8 sooner.
I've gotten everything in the game, and did it all in three days.

The other characters' stages may not be fun in your opinion, but they definitely work for me, and probably for plenty of other players as well. I think the treasure-hunting levels are very well designed and fun to play, and the formula for them seems to work fine given that there are seemingly countless hiding places for the Emeralds. The shooting levels are pretty good too, IMO. My favorites are still the speed levels, but the others are not bad either. And IMO all the levels in SA2B are made worth playing by the fact that you can collect Chao-raising stuff in them.

The argument that the games aren't good because they go away from the original Sonic formula and have treasure-hunting and shooting levels added is pretty weak. A game can still be good if it goes away from the series' roots. Something new and different showing up in a game in a series can be a good thing. I just think the other levels add a pleasant sort of variety to the gameplay.

I don't think of the Sonic Adventure games as all "SERIOUS BUSINESS" either. They don't really seem more serious than the original Sonic games in my view, except that they have a distinct storyline in them. Sonic Heroes is the same way. Shadow the Hedgehog would qualify more as "serious business", but it's obviously a lot different from the other 3D Sonic titles before it.

As for the camera, it is a minor annoyance, but games with lots of glitches can still be quite good games with a lot of fun value.

^ A word of advice: You may want to edit your post up there before anyone sees it, as you may get in trouble for flaming. I agree that LD calling you retarded was quite unnecessary, and the remark may even count as flaming itself, but... well, it would certainly make you look better to bear it patiently, and the fact that he's a moderator could make any trouble you might get in more serious. So as I say, I don't want to offend you, but it would probably be a lot better if you edited your post.

EDIT: And yes, I agree that TEM's comments can be pretty inflammatory at times too, but all the same....

Mario Chat / Re: Mario Haters...Why do they have to be so mean?

Maybe people hate him because he is a stereotype of Italian people? Maybe they hate him because a family member has done something stupid over him?

Those are both extremely crappy reasons for someone to hate him. You would have to be extremely overly sensitive about ethnicity to hate the character because he's a comical stereotype. I can't imagine any Italian taking offense at that. And if a family member "did something stupid over him" (I can't imagine what you could possibly have in mind), hating the character himself is ridiculously irrational.

Maybe Mario haters technically have a right to their opinions, but their hatred of Mario is stupid and ridiculous all the same, and I have a right to be angry and look down on them for it.

Incidentally, I usually don't react as strongly to posts on this message board as I did earlier in this topic, but (1) I was in a bad mood yesterday when I made my last two posts, and (2) I absolutely cannot stand it when anyone defends Mario haters under any circumstances. Anti-Mario people are some of the most annoying people to me ever, and if someone defends them they are simply asking for it from me.

Also, the fact that I've been making somewhat heated replies to various posts by CreamCat (in other topics also) does not mean that I have something against this member personally. The fact is that a lot of the posts (s)he makes just happen to contain things with which I disagree, and I am a rather irritable person by nature, so sometimes I reply in a somewhat heated way when I disagree with people, and other members of message boards are included among those people also. So, as I say, it has nothing to do with personal grudges.

Hmm... well, thanks, SushieBoy and Ultima Shadow. To tell you the truth I rather expected a bunch of people to be angrily contesting what I said, so the fact that you think my opinion sensible is a pleasant surprise.

I don't exactly know, but I am really bothered by the stupidity of Mario haters regardless. It just lowers my opinion of the human race, seeing more instances all the time of just how low the capacity for reason of certain human beings is.

Besides, if someone is crazy enough to actually hate Mario, it's more than likely that he'll be outspoken about his hatred, given the nature of his prejudice. And insulting Mario out loud really, really offends me.
