Do I really need to write anything else?

The N64 title Yoshi's Story has been released for the Virtual Console here in North America.

If you haven't played this yet, the game is a more arcade-like take on a Mario platformer.  As Yoshi, eat fruit, toss eggs, and stop Shy Guys as you try to stop the evil baby Bowser from doing whatever it was he did this time.  The game features prerendered graphics (much like the Donkey Kong Country series, but at a much higher quality) and "two dimensional" gameplay.

The game is a bit on the short side, but it does offer a good chunk of replay value due to the structure of the levels - each world has several levels, but you only play one level each time you progress through the game.  Your level options are dependent on how well you play...

Yoshi's Story is a fun little platformer, but don't go in expecting Super Mario Bros. 3 or Yoshi's Island.

Oh yes, I nearly forgot...

Latest News / SSBB: Golden Hammer (Wrecking Crew time!)
« on: September 17, 2007, 02:25:24 AM »
The most recent Super Smash Bros. Brawl update is an item called the Golden Hammer -- a super version of the standard hammer which also lets you run in midair if you are rapidly tapping the button.

It's come to my attention that this is a direct reference to the infamous Golden Hammer in the classic Wrecking Crew for the NES... the Golden Hammer was very, very rare, but when you had it you did more damage, swung it more quickly, and could run over gaps in space by rapidly tapping the button.  In addition, the Brawl Golden Hammer appears on a pedestal/platform thing that looks somewhat like the pedestal the hammer and golden hammer appear on in Wrecking Crew.

Between Eggplant Man in two GC titles and this... well, no, we aren't seeing a Wrecking Crew resurge, but it is interesting!

Latest News / Euro VC Update - Japan only Mario games?
« on: September 13, 2007, 09:03:35 PM »
Early reports are indicating that the European/Australian/New Zealand Wii Shop Channels will be selling Super Mario Picross and the original Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 tomorrow, Friday the 14th.  This would be significant as neither of these titles were ever released in their original forms in the west.  Supposedly both cost roughly 100 points more than a standard SNES or NES game, and come with the warning that they may still contain "some Japanese text".

Nintendo of Australia's site seems to say that in celebration of the Japanese Hanabi Festival, they'll be releasing several US/Japan only titles to the Australian (and, presumably, European) Wii Shop over the next few weeks - including Sin and Punishment, an N64 shooter infamous for not being released in the West.

The only real catch to this is that the original Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 is only supposed to be made available until the end of September - then it's removed from the shop.

I suppose this means we folks in the USA will be getting Mario's Super Picross and Super Mario Bros. 2 in the near future... possibly Monday, but it's always hard to tell with these things.

More information as it becomes available and verified.

Latest News / TMK Staff To Be Interviewed by Ecuadorian Radio Station
« on: September 13, 2007, 09:28:22 AM »
Now THERE'S a title you don't expect to see.

A radio station in Ecuador (http://www.radiocity.com.ec/) is doing a show on the Mario game series today, as part of their entertainment show ("El Aguacate" - The Avacado).  They wanted someone from TMK to talk with them today, and it appears I'm the lucky party.

So, if you are in Ecuador, tune in from 5-8pm Ecuadorian time (3-6pm PST) to hear yours truly speaking... I'm not sure exactly when I'll be on, but it should be closer to the 5:30-6:00PST segment.

Now to go brush up on my Mario...

Game Blog / Brain Age 2 -- with Mario???
« on: August 27, 2007, 12:11:41 AM »
Brain Age 2 was very recently released.  As you might have heard, it comes with Virus Buster, which has been described as "a Dr. Mario clone."

I just finished playing it for a bit... it's Dr. Mario in art style and features the Chill music from the Dr. Mario games.

Mario cameo stuff is just popping up all over the place in these "Touch Generations" titles...

Game Blog / The WTMK Updates Just Don't Stop....
« on: August 24, 2007, 09:37:41 AM »
For the weekend, a new selection of Mario tunes has been added to the WTMK playlist.

You can expect to hear music from Super Paper Mario, Super Princess Peach, Wario Ware: Smooth Moves, and a few other titles.  Can you guess what else has been added?

Here's a hint... two of the selections tie into a hardware line, while the third could be called a trifle more flat.

Well, it's been a bit dry for a stretch, but TMK's streaming radio channel, WTMK, has been updated with new music and a few surprises... now featuring music from Yoshi's Island DS, Mario vs. DK 2: March of the Minis, Mario Hoops 3-on-3, and more tunes from Yoshi Touch & Go.

Yes, it's a very DS WTMK over at http://www.themushroomkingdom.net/wtmk.shtml .

Game Blog / Super Mario Bros. DX - Replaying
« on: July 23, 2007, 09:19:50 AM »
So I stumbled across my SMB Deluxe cart recently and starting playing through it again... yes, I know, there are much better ways to play it on handhelds these days, but I do find myself wishing Nintendo did a few more of these mild updates.  I'm starting to think that with the advent of the Virtual Console, most remakes of classic titles will cease.

That's probably a good thing, but there is something interesting about playing through different versions of a game.  There are at least four different versions of Super Mario Bros. out there (3, if you discount the arcade title), each with a slightly different feel to it.
