Mario Chat / Re: Yoshi and the Yoshi-theme: Abused!?
« on: February 13, 2004, 08:23:42 PM »
That whole concept is the thought behind "Conker's Bad Fur Day," which I am not a fan of for just such a reason.  South Park is the same idea, really.

The thing with those is at least they were made to *be* that way and express that paradox (well, Conker was in a couple games previous, but never really established in either).  But you take an iconic thing like Mario, where the All Ages mentality has been established for 20 plus years and do a 180, that only adds confusion or can really broadcast the wrong message to the wrong age group.

And really, to me, it takes away all the fun. I would much rather watch a flash animation that stayed true to character.

I think Yoshi porn is wrong, but that's kinda moot, cause I think *all* porn is wrong.

Now, as to the concept of aplying adult or mature things to the Mario world--and I use those terms loosely, since violence and whatnaught really aren't mature or okay for adults:

I think when you venture too far from the intended tone of Mario, you lose the whole point.  Example: I came across a flash animation (one of many, I was lead to believe) of Baby Mario being killed in many different and gruesome ways.  Likewise, flash animations that have Yoshi's biting heads off and spitting out bloody skulls. I also saw a fan made Mario live-action movie that I thought had potential, but included things like guns and blood and one-night-stands in it.  This always urks me.  I think it seriously taints the "universe" and the theme that Mario stands for: Fun for all ages.  Do things really have to totally undergo a complete overhall of style when you grow up?  Does everything need to be about drugs and violence?  Why can't you still enjoy the things of your youth the way they were?

Anywho, that's my two cents. I don't mean to stomp on anyone's toes, but that's my opinion of the issue at hand.

Was that DK Jr? It looked like just regular DK (which made no sense, cause he's playable.  Course, in my book, DK Jr and current DK are the same anyway...but then again, the Baby Mario Bros. are in the same game as the Super Mario Bros...Ack! Must...stop..trying...to make things...make sense...)

Anywho, this all just proves how much you can miss in this game simply zipping by at 70 mph!

This is *not* official, but I've always imagined that it is inhabited by Mushroom People who looked more of Asian decent.  I dunno why, but I do. :)

Mario Chat / Re: Super Mario Fans: Discriminated or Truth!?
« on: January 16, 2004, 11:25:02 AM »
This was a bigger problem when I was younger.  When I was a kid, I was a huge Mario fan, and others were Mario fans, too.  As we started to grow up, many took the mentality, "Oh, we can't like what we liked as kids anymore!" while I remained still a huge Mario fan.  If anything, I became *more* of a fan as I grew older!

It was hardest in the 8th grade to early highschool years, as a certain "cool" was prevelant in all things, and being a 9th grader who drew Mario all over his notes was not part of that "cool."  It hit its hight as Sony introduced the PSX, and all of the sudden Nintendo got the label as "kiddie."

Thing is, this is also when I came to realize that "cool" is not a definite term.  I proudly started proclaiming my Mario fan-dom again, and drew entire comics based on him.  I saw that "kiddie" was (and still is) just a derogatory of refering to games that all ages can enjoy.  I, quite frankly, respect those games much more than the mature games on the market about crime and other things.

Since the boiling point, things have died down.  Now being a Mario fan has a certain retro "cool" to it, so discrimination isn't as prevelent.

Still, "cool" or not, I'm proud of being a Mario fan.  Fun characters and timeless games that anybody can enjoy? That really is something to be proud of.

Mario Chat / Re: Mario Survey (come here immidietly!!!)
« on: January 14, 2004, 10:39:53 AM »
1. What Mario games have you played?
All of them, save things like "Mario's Fundamentals" and other learning games. Only two of those I've played are "Mario is Missing" and "Mario Teaches Typing."

2. How many Mario games do you own?
Let's see...
NES= SMB, SMB2, SMB3
SNES= SMW, SMAS, SMRPG, MK, SMW2:YI
N64= SM64, PM, MK64, MT, SSB (if that counts)
GBC= SML3:WL, WL2, WL3, SMB:DX (I don't actually own SML Or SML2, but I enjoy them very much)
GBA= SMA, SMA2:SMW, SMA3:YI, WL4, MK:SS, M&L:SSS
GCN= LM, SMS, SSBM, MK:DD!!
I think that's all, but I might have missed some.

3. What's your favorite Mario game?
For the longest time it was hands down SMB3.  It probably still is, but there's just been so many good ones, especially the RPG games, cause they incorprate more of the characters and story, and I like that a lot.

4. What's your least favorite Mario game? (you gotta have at least ONE)
Can I cop out and say "Mario is Missing?" I remember seeing that on the rental shelf and thinking, "Oh, yes, a new Mario game!" only to find out it was an educational game.  Still played through it, though.

5. Do you like Kirby? (I like him. He's so cute!!!)
Yep, Kirby's awesome.  Nnnot so much a fan of the cartoon (all half-an-episode that I saw), but his games are great and the character is cool.  I especially like the GBA remake of KA for the NES, "Knightmare in Dreamland."  Very well done, and you can play as Meta-Knight!

6. Do you like Megaman? (I, personnally, HATE Megaman because an 8th grader at my school named Grant Willoby said that Megaman "rules" and Mario "sucks". I DESPISE HIM FOR THAT!!!)

Ah...I remember when I used to hate Sonic the Hedgehog cause in a Sonic commercial, Sega mocked Mario. Oooh, I hated Sonic.  But as time went on, I learned that you really don't have to hate icons cause of that.  I discovered Sonic has great games, too, and is a cool character.  Totally independent of Mario.  So, GiftedGirl, I'd recommend giving MegaMan a shot regardless of your "friends" mocking. I, for one, enjoy the classic MegaMan games very much, as well as the X series.

And that's the way the Yoshi's Cookie crumbles.

I really like to mix it up in every respect, but I've found I've really enjoyed using the Toads in the Toad Kart.

Would it be in the original SMB3 manual?  I don't think it was, but I can't imagine where else it would be.

Another good explanation of Yoshies.

Personally, I think that male Yoshies lay eggs that aren't reproductive in nature, while the female Yoshies can lay both. This is not based on anything; just a thought I like to entertain.

I'd agree with that.  Basically "event" markers.  The event was a mystery, hence the question mark. Usually it'd unlock doors or create bridges, and then in SMW's case, show the entrance to the Valley of Bowser.

I thought that was only in the Japanese version.  Be neat if they were in the US one, though.

I hadn't even thought about "Guy." That's a perfect example, and just a bit more common than Human.  heh heh
