Mario Chat / A Thread about Super Mario RPG

Super Mario RPG.....one of the weirdest yet most lauded titles in Mario lore.

Remember back when everybody was clamoring for a GBA release? Remember how big of a deal it was when they finally put it on the VC in Europe?

I still see people everywhere who love this game. I myself loved it in my youth, but I can't help but feel nowadays that it's somewhat out of place amongst the rest of Mario's library. Square certainly came up with a...."unique" crop of characters to put in it. Ever wonder why they looked or acted the way they did? I certainly have. Some of them don't even look like Mario characters!

Heck, I sometimes wonder if Miyamoto himself was displeased with the game. Based on the story behind Yoshi's Island's development, apparently Hiroshi Yamauchi pressured him into making a Mario game with pre-rendered graphics. As if that weren't enough, Paper Mario, what with it's working title of "Super Mario RPG 2" feels an awful like an attempt to remake the first game except with much more "Mario-fied" content given all the similarities it has (wishing stars as the major plot point, seven star-shaped objects, a wizard that tells you where to go next, a party member that gives info on enemies, etc. etc.).

So what do you folks think of Super Mario RPG? Discuss whatever you want surrounding the game. Favorite memories, oddities, grievances, personal beefs, likes/dislikes, you name it. The floor is open.

CrossEyed's post in that "Mario's parents" thread made me want to do something I've wanted to do forever: Start up a discussion about continuity and misconceptions in the Mario series.

So here's a thread where we can discuss inconsistencies, plotholes, explanations, fan theories, stuff about the characters' personalities and interactions, etc. etc.

And before the discussion begins, let me be the first to point out that yes, Mario DOES have continuity to some degree. It may not have an official timeline with a list of works considered "non-canon" like so many other franchises out there, but it DOES maintain some sort of connection from one game to the next, however lose they may be. It should also be noted that yes, the continuity of the games is seperate and distinct from the continuity of the cartoons, comics or Mario movie, largely because Nintendo and everyone within clearly doesn't acknowledge them anymore. (and I swear Chup, you come within three feet of this topic I'll swat you down)

So, for our first subject, Is Mario from Brooklyn?

By which I mean, should the idea of Mario being from Brooklyn be acknowledged as a part of his backstory or should it remain relegated to only the cartoons and movie?

I made this thread for discussion about cartoons, seeing is how Nintendo Bros.' polls sparked a lot of toon discussion. So the last thing we left off at was about the Simpsons. Hopefully the mods will merge those posts with this topic.

Mario Chat / Sonic/Mario crossover?

Yes, I know the topic at hand has been done to death, but this time it's a little different. I want to see what you guys think would be good ideas for a game like this. Ideas such as: the plot, which characters would be featured, the gameplay, whether or not Mario and Sonic will be rivals, etc. So watchathink?

My idea for a plot involved Eggman accidently using the Chaos Emeralds to warp to the Mushroon Kingdom and meet Bowser. They decide to join forces and help one aother get rid of their enemies. Sonic and the other Sonic characters end up chasing Eggman into the Mushroom Kingdom and getting separated. From here, Sonic and Tails have a fight with Bowser, who tells him that Mario and Luigi are the real enemy. Amy Rose ends up at the castle and meets Peach while Knuckles lands in the middle of Nowhere with the Master Emerald, which Wario tries to steal. Eventually Sonic and Mario realize who the real villains are and go after Eggman and Bowser back into Sonic's world (which may or may not be Mobius, accordig to the games' canon) and the second half of the game picks up from there. Leading all the way to a final battle in the pathway between the dimentions. How's it sound? You may post your own ideas if you wish.

Video Game Chat / What would you do if you had control of Nintendo?

Face it, the Mario franchise isn't enough. We'd all love to see the rest of Nintendo make our gaming dreams come true, so post away...

Here's mine:
-New Kid Icarus.
-New Ice Climber.
-New Balloon Fight.
-Pikmin 3
-New version of ROB for the Wii.
-New Punch-Out!!
-Remake of Banjo-Kazooie on the DS.
-Another Zelda that plays like Zelda II.
-Pokemon 64 on the virtual console (NOT Stadium, an entirly new game).
-Japan-only games on the virtual console.
-A new, better and healthier version of the Virtual Boy.
-Bring back Captain N, feature him in SSB and then make a game about him.
-New Star Tropics.
-Nintenchickens. XD

Mario Chat / What would you do if you had control of the Mario Franchise?

I have finally decided to create a topic!

Let's face it: there are a lot of things we want to happen to the Mario franchise, but can't do ourselves. So here's a topic for posting what you want to happen to the Mario franchise.

Here's my ideas:
-Make another Wario Land.
-Instead of churning out spinoffs, release them on one disk(a la Wiisports).
-Remake the first three Mario Parties on one disk and leave it at that.
-Make a Mario Kart with 100 playable characters and 100 items.
-Make Mario & Luigi 3 featuring Wario and Waluigi.
-Make a whole new Mario RPG series(preferably one that spoofs Final Fantasy).
-Bring back Stanley the Bugman and Foreman Spike.
-Bring back the bosses from Wario's Woods(they have untapped potential).
-Make a Mario fighting game(parody of Street Fighter or Tekken).
-Give Toad his own game(action/adventure/platformer, not puzzle).
-Give Bowser his own game.
-Make another Mario anthology(including the NES,SNES and Game Boy series, all with updated graphics).
