we might all be dead in a couple of months, so lets discuss how we will probably die. And to think, about a week or two ago, I was thinking we are overdue for a plague.

This is possibly the most over-hyped event so far this year. The only reason people see this as such a disaster is because the government wants them to.

Republicans blindingly voted down a proposition that would create programs to combat pandemics. Although this new strain of flu is hardly a new Black Death, it's still something we should take into consideration. Certain people can succumb to this. The government isn't trying to scare us into doing anything.

Some people have brought up the idea that it was artificially created. Also, pharmaceutical companies stand to make a killing from the drugs they're shipping out all over the place because of it. Said drugs aren't sufficiently tested and potentially deadly. Government shouldn't be able to mandate vaccinations, etc. because we end up with the previous "swine flu" situation from the '70s where they started giving mandatory vaccinations and the vaccine killed people. I was going to say that Turtlekid may be onto something (but I retract that with his latest post), although I would substitute "media" for government, but then again the media that is promoting swine flu as a pandemic is all government-fueled anyway.
It's pretty funny though how we get a new not-really-pandemic every few years that just kind of dematerializes. Also I agree with the people who declare "swine flu" a misnomer because it isn't actually the same virus.

I see no people turning into pigs, so 'swine flu' isn't the correct term..

On a serious note: what are the symptoms? My wife was very sick recently, and they never did tell me what was wrong with her. She had a fever (often above 100), naseau, and.. the runs. I seem to recall reading somewhere that those are swine flu symtoms, but she hasn't had any pork lately. Not since before she was pregnant, anyway.

Just today, there was an announcement that two people at my school had this flu. They're shutting the school down until the 13th.

That means no school...no seeing classmates...until the 13th.

Just a few years ago, I would've just been jumping for joy at the fact that I wouldn't have to go to school. Now it's saddening. :(

Remember Avian Flu? Wasn't everyone supposed to die?

What about the global panic of AIDS?

Seriously, more people have died from a single serial killer than from the "swine flu".

But to give WHO some credit, the initial deaths in Mexico gave the perception that this would be a pandemic. So far though, the unamed flu of 2003 has caused more deaths.

(I consider all live precious so please don't use my relativism here to think otherwise.)
