About teh purple overalls thing, they didn't just do that in SMW, it's been in every game since. I first noticed this in SSB and in SMBDX. I think it makes a good touch. Course the white with green overalls is my favorite.

To get teh mushroom kingdom, not only do oyu have to beat the game with the original 8 characters, but you have to have fought a battle in every level in Vs mode. (not that anyone who has SSB wouldn't, but in case just beating it with teh 8 doesn't work for ya.)

A while ago (i don't know if it's still there) there was a page that had how mario connected with different things, for example, under "the NHL" it said how Mario Lemuix was called Super Mario. There is something that not many people remember. Mario was the mascot for eth Philadelphia Flyers. It was a big head on the scoreboard similar to teh opening of SM64 with the big mario head. It didn't go over too well and only lasted for two-three games.
