Video Game Chat / Re: "It's Too Short"
« on: June 05, 2010, 12:30:31 PM »
I voted "it depends", but usually my answer is "no".

It depends on how fulfilling the experience is, whether I feel like going for the optional rewards, and how much replay I get out of the thing. Basically whether I feel like I went through a grand long adventure when I'm through. An example of a game I felt was too short, once I got good at it, was Wave Race 64. I blasted through the three circuits, didn't feel particularly challenged, and was left wondering "was that it?" Felt similar with Extreme-G, given I unlocked nearly everything in one day. The same could also go for Super Punch-Out, since once you've unlocked all the boxers the only reason to come back is to finish it with no defeats or to down each boxer in the fastest time possible, so it felt like a one-play-worth game.

Beyond Good & Evil felt like a medium-length game, but a tad short since the ending came up sooner than I thought (though granted I knew when I was getting close). Since you can continue to grab the rest of the collectables before finishing the game (er, most of them), I was able to prolong that game's length such that it felt satisfactory. Plus, it was a really good experience anyway, so it felt like a decent length.

Regarding number of hours played, around 40 seems to be the satisfactory "long-ish" limit for me. That's how long I spent with World Driver Championship (and you really start to get sick of replaying the same circuits over and over after a while). I clocked 60 hours with Final Fantasy X, but that felt LONG, that felt more like 120 hours. It was 60 hours of always-changing terrain, never-ending story, and a whole bunch of optional sidequests. I clocked 70 hours with Okami, which is the longest I've spent on a game. Yeah, it felt long, but not nearly as long as Final Fantasy X. Partly because of the numerous sidequests, partly because I left the system on for hours just to listen to the music.

It's well-known that the Half-Life 2 episodes are short. They didn't feel short (especially not Episode 2, given how much ground you cover), so I guess the experience was just that good.

I just recently started replaying HL2 for the achievements. Was that game always long as [dukar]?
Yes. It's what we call "this is the game that makes up for over five years of waiting."

Regarding what WarpRattler said about New Game Plus not feeling that much different from multiple endings... yeah. Because you usually get to go through the game again twice as fast or faster, not just because you know what to do now, but also because you start out with your awesome gear from the last playthrough or experience is doubled. Going through Okami in its New Game Plus mode made me fly through it in under 10 hours, as opposed to 70. It's fun breezing through the game so quickly, but then you lose out on the first experience with its more deliberate pace.
...but screw that, walking on water is always cool.

Ah, I always wondered where that thing was from. Lost to the horses doing faceplants (yeah, I'm pretty sure those horses are in a coma or dead by now), the infamous skidding-under-the-truck horse, the jeeps being able to jump at will, crashing through multiple panes of glass without slowing down, and the random explosions at the end. Lost to everything, really. Everything's just so over, it's like the film Michael Bay would make as a kid.

But my favorite part still is having those jeeps launch into the air just by rising from your seat. Watch 2:47-3:00, it's like the 100m Hurdles Dash with jeeps.

General Chat / Re: Mouse and Pad
« on: May 31, 2010, 06:45:53 PM »
I'm too lazy to screenshot my room, but I've got a USB black Microsoft laser mouse. Yeah, kind of like the one Ninjap00 posted, except... not as sleek. But I've recently found myself preferring small-ish mice anyway, mice that my whole hand can cover, mice that I can palm. No, I can't word it any more innocently than that. btw, the Mighty Mouse by Apple is the worst mouse I've ever used, with not clearly feeling a separation of the two button and an absolutely ridiculous pointy-feeling "nub" for the mouse wheel. So I prefer regular two-button USB mice. Sorry Apple, I always thought you lagged behind in the mouse department, and still do.

As for the mouse pad I have, it's a moonlight scene (oddly enough with the Earth in the horizon) with three wolves howling. No, it doesn't make me manly and powerful. It just makes me a furry.

I think he was just showing us how we could make our own. Nothing dishonorable in doing that. Although, yes, he could have used just the same method.

The Vlasic bird is now CGI 3D.
Why did he have to be 3D? There was NOTHING wrong with him being 2D! You don't just reinvent characters for no good reason! If you're gonna do 3D, at -least- make him look as good as his 2D self, but no! Come on, this is 2010, there's no excuse!

(for reference, this is the last commercial with his 2D self that I saw)

While I miss his glasses and curvier beak, I have to admit it's not as bad as what happened to Ranger Rick, but it just rubs me the wrong way to suddenly see a character done in CGI. Remember the guy in the caterpillar suit for Money Tree? I hated that caterpillar, but still, I preferred the caterpillar suit and blatant goofiness to the CGI caterpillar they tried for a while.

But if your CGI looks as bad as "The General" Auto Insurance, then you just need to drop off the face of the earth.

btw, the whole Internet's already picked up on Reshiram's crotch fuzz, so anything you say has probably already been said. Except... every time I look at it it's just... REALLY out there and blatant that I can't think of it existing for any other reason. I'll be eagerly awaiting the public response over it. I mean, the guys who did Super Punch-Out just barely got away with Heike Kagero (the guy who wore no shirt yet looked like a woman), made me wonder how many letters Nintendo got over that. Does Nintendo want that to happen again?

Ursurp from the GameFAQs Pokemon Black forum says it best:
Quote from: Ursurp
Zekrom has his whole mecha-Slowbro thing going for him and a jaw that could bite through adamantium.
Reshiram has an enormous wing-crotch that strikes fear into the hearts of his foes.

This will be the hardest decision of my life.

I take it you've never been to one of the Spencers gift shops (seriously. They have stuff in there I was shocked to see in a mall... which was awesome).

Why is Heart such a lame power?
