You don't die in the Paper Mario games, you get KOed.

Bowser charges himself up, nothing hurts him. Star Spirits power and the Peach Beam didn't hurt Bowser it just stopped the Star Rod's magic.

At the Mariology forum Forum we've concluded the SMRPG area is another part of the Mushroom Kingdom ( Like Hawaii to the US ). The Chancellor rules that area while Peach rules the Paper Mario/Mario&Luigi area.
