Mario Chat / Re: Mario core/canon games?
« on: May 18, 2012, 05:03:13 PM »
I've always considered both SMB2s canon, but I don't know if I consider SMW2 to be part of the series due to the subtitle and ensuing sequels being under a different name.  I like to consider SML/SML2 part of the canon as well, though I suppose you could use the same argument there (SML3: Wario Land and subsequent).  And if NSMB is canon, I don't see why NSMBW shouldn't be considered so as well.

^ So much this.  Sure, points are satisfying to rack up in SMB3 and World (You'd be surprised how many six-or more-jump strings you can get in either), but besides the obviously last-minute throw-in in Super Mario Advance 2's Special World, I've never seen a Mario game overtly challenge you to get high scores.  Super Mario Bros. DX is probably my favorite game of all time, largely because of the simplicity of the game behind it, and replayability that added challenge lends to it.

Seeing as I've only recently gotten into Kirby and don't own any of the series, this is pretty much a must-get for me regardless of what's on it.

Did the Special Zone get shafted there?  I can't seem to find it anywhere, assuming that thing up in the center of the sky appears to be Rainbow Road.  Unless the curve on the right side of Rainbow Road IS the Special Zone...

(squee)  Okay, I really should consider getting a 3DS at some point in the near future now.  Heck, original NSMB was pretty much the sole thing that convinced me to get a DS.  But actual flight powerups?  What is this nonsense?  Does this mean actually mildly explorable levels?

Lolwut?  Funnier still, this is even less probable in Superstar Saga+, as I raised Queen Bean's HP from 120 to 600.

Do you have a link to that "unused jingle"?

Perhaps sadly, there is no list of lists of lists of lists.

Mario Chat / Re: Luigi wins by doing absolutely nothing
« on: March 30, 2012, 08:56:37 AM »
I don't see how random games are worth considering if it automatically selects something afterward.  Some of these, like Fish upon a Star and Dodge Bomb in MP5, were pretty amusing, though.

I also loved the Mario Party 3 "Luigi does nothing" video, but that appears to have been taken down at some point.

EDIT: Also, yikes.  Mario Party 9 looks like a carbon copy of Wii Party with Mario characters.

I had a mindblowing revelation the other day concerning Super Mario Bros. 3; you know how when you kill enemies with hammers and such, their sprite flips over as they die?  Well, for the longest time, I thought Thwomps had a unique sprite when you killed them.  All this time, I thought the reddish ring around their top spike, combined with the already flipped eyes, were a sad-looking face.  Nope, turns out that it's just another flipped sprite.

But look at the sprite here and tell me you didn't/don't see that as well:

Heck, I know that's a flipped sprite now, and even still, when playing the game, I can't unsee that face.

Besides a few glaring errors in physics (which I noted on the SMBC forums) that were present in older versions, this is pretty solid.  Not being able to jump on enemies makes it a completely different game for the majority of the cast, though.

Didn't know the name, but I did think it looked like a series of knight moves prior to seeing Weegee's post.

I love how that came out just days after the initial comment.  Is someone on the Dorkly crew a FFer?

Can't believe I didn't post this here sooner.  At any rate, this Youtube alt-account of mine was collecting dust until it occurred to me around November that I could actually record half-decent audio on my iPhone, rather than trying to find a cheap MP3-recorder/player thing to ultimately produce an inferior-quality file.  At any rate, I currently have just over 50 different video game themes uploaded, mostly from the Mario and Mother series, and I put up new ones in batches of 5-ish every so often.

Here's a link to the first of the actually good recordings (most of the ones before that I've spiced up and re-uploaded since anyway): Link

Enjoy!
