Mario Chat / A victory thirteen years in the making...
« on: November 16, 2006, 01:42:43 AM »
It took me more than a decade, but I finally beat The Lost Levels tonight :)  I originally got stuck in world 4 and gave up for many years at that point. I later picked the game back up during college and made it all the way to 8-3, and that's where my save game had been waiting all this time. I picked it back up tonight on a whim after having messed around with the game on an emulator, and I finally beat it. I was so excited that I had to come back here and tell you guys (I haven't visited these boards for a long time, good to see they're still going :)

Game Help / Re: Debug mode on World & All Stars ROM?
« on: August 23, 2003, 10:10:13 PM »
What's most odd is that it's not in ALL versions of the original Super Mario All-Stars. The debug cheat for SMB3 does *NOT* work on my real SMAS cartridge. However, I also have the ROMs of both SMAS and SMAS-SMW, and it works on both of them.

The only plausible explanation is that Nintendo fixed the issue in a second run of SMAS, but that when SMAS-SMW was developed, it neglected to use the appropriate patched source code for the game, and therefore reintroduced the debug cheat.

I find that all that really matters is giving Peach the Lazy Shell armor and having plenty of FP and items before you go in. If you do that and use the "strategy of attrition," letting all the crystals' FP run out, then it's really pathetically easy.

Did you try the receiver in BOTH controller ports? I forget which one it goes in. Seems like it's port #1, but it's been so long since I used mine I've forgotten (I prefer to just play that game on ZSNES ;)

Yeah, you need the infrared receiver unit that plugs into a controller port. If you can find one of those somewhere, you should be good to go.

In case you get it working and you don't have instructions for Yoshi's Safari, you should play with the turbo switch on. The fire button up on top shoots, and the "cursor" button on the front handle lets you jump (only necessary at certain special places).

Mario Chat / Re: Your favorite Mario Show

I always loved watching the Mario cartoons when I was a kid, but each one had something to annoy me. The first one had the cheesy live-action segments which I never personally cared for at all, and sometimes ran Zelda instead, and at that time I don't think I even knew what Zelda was. The second one had the weirdo names for the Koopa Kids. And of course, the Super Mario World cartoon replaced Toad and his trademark doggie-chew-toy squeak when jumping with the much less amusing Yoshi.

Despite, I still liked them all well enough to watch every day that I could ;)

Mario Chat / Re: Mario golf toadstool tour secret characters

Although Toad keeps getting left out as a playable character in all the mario spinoffs (which I think is terrible, since he's my favorite character period), the evidence that Toad is actually a great golfer is not hard to find.

First off, he owns a golf course, Toad Highlands, and the trophies for said course are mini statues of Toad with a golf club. Also, he gets to make the official calls (OB, etc). Apparently he was just so good that he retired and now runs it for everyone else ;)

Mario Chat / Re: Can Donkey Kong be considered a Mario character?
« on: August 14, 2003, 11:42:53 PM »
Well, I think DK isn't too out of place in the Mario universe. I don't think they should keep bringing over more of the other characters though. Diddy's appearance in MK:DD is novel, but I hope it won't start a trend.

I am fanatical about Toad. He's always been my favorite since SMB2. I can beat every level in that game using only him. I also always use him other games, especially the Mario Kart series ^_^

Now that Luigi got a game to himself (though a rather mediocre one IMHO), it's time for Toad to get his four hours of fame (and no, I really don't think Wario's Woods can count for that...).

I'm writing a reusable game engine from scratch in VC++ with the SDL library, mostly for use as a portfolio item. Toad's Adventure is just a side project that will use that engine :->

Mario Chat / Re: who still plays super mario rpg
« on: August 14, 2003, 04:20:07 AM »
I just recently finished my *original* Mario RPG game which I started on zsnes several years ago. I stopped playing it when I ran out to buy the cartridge (this was at the very dusk of the SNES' reign and I got the LAST copy in any store within a 30 mile radius). Anyways, I made a point of doing some stuff I'd never bothered with before, like getting the Sheep Attack. It's fun to find new stuff to do in an old game.

I won't be so bold to call it the best Mario game ever, but I'm still working on the "Toad's Adventure: The Return of Wart" game which I announced here a long long time ago. It's an RPG, sort of in the vein of the two existing Mario RPGs, but with a more mature battle system.

The story centers around Toad (naturally), who has just returned to the Mushroom Kingdom shortly after the events in Paper Mario. The game opens up in the Koopahari desert to show Malek, grandson of Kamek and successor to the now-outcast Kammy, raising a mysterious ancient temple from the sands.

Bowser attacks the Mushroom Kingdom with a force of unprecendented size in anticipation of claiming the powers in that temple. Part way through the story, you also learn that Wart has escaped from exile in the Land of Dreams, and has joined with Bowser.

There's a few cool plot twists, and there's elements from and allusions to almost every existing Mario game, as well as a few in-jokes from the net (including a couple from this site).

Among the eight plus party members you'll get are the Princess, and much later on, Luigi. Also starring will be Toad's fabled long-lost cousin, who was rumored to be a playable character in the never-confirmed Mario game for SNES CD, who is expert at handling poisonous and carnivorous plants.

Some of the locations in the game will be drawn from both Mario RPG and Paper Mario.

As for legality, well, this is a private project. I have no intention to distribute this en masse or make any webpages for it. I can make sure it gets to anyone who wants to play it once it's done though ;)  The game engine is really coming along, but most of the content remains to be done.

As far as I know, "asm" is just a common abbreviation for assembly language. I don't think its an actual acronym. Assembly is a convenient way to give a CPU its basic instructions, and almost all NES games were written in it.

I also know MIPS assembly, which I had to learn in college for my CS degree :)

Actually a correction. I tried the Icy stream again and now it seems to work. The Shoutcast stream doesn't seem to work though. Oh well, just letting you know! ^_^

Game Help / Re: Assess my Paper Mario equip!

This is kind of an old thread now, but what I finally ended up doing was taking a look at a list of some Tayce T. recipes and I found out that its really easy to make an item I didn't have any idea of, the Deluxe Feast, which gives 40 hp and 40 mp or some similar amounts. Anyways, I combined all my Ultra Shrooms and Jammin' Jellies into Ultra Jellies, then filled the rest of my inventory with those Deluxe Feasts. Bowser can't touch me now heheh.
