Video Game Chat / Blu-ray, HD-DVD: What do you think?
« on: December 19, 2005, 08:02:29 PM »
What do you guys think about this Blu-ray Vs. HD-DVD nonsense?

Is Sony being too optimistic about their Blu-ray format? Yes the PS3 ia using it, but what if the format fails? Many of you may be saying: "how could Blu-ray fail if PS3 uses it?" PS3 is using Blu-ray primarily for games. If the format fails to catch on outside of the gaming industry, then Sony is stuck with a useless product.

Blu-ray has many more supporters than HD-DVD, but that could all change once those companies realize how expensive the technology is. HD-DVD is cheaper to produce, since it uses similar manufactuing process as normal DVD. Blu-ray discs are thinner than DVD and HD-DVD, and require new production techniques.

Microsoft is supporting HD-DVD, and they are supposedly working on an HD-DVD Xbox 360. HP has recently announced their support for HD-DVD.

Should we worry about which format wins? Or should we just stick with standard DVD like Nintendo has done?

I gotcha. MTV used to be a music channel, until they started showing crap like Real World and RW: Road Rules.

G4 is no longer the videogame channel it once was. I want to create a videogame channel that is strictly videogames only!

What's next, Cartoon Network showing live action movies? Oh they already did that.

Mario Football, good one.

Mario Basketball is being made by Square Enix (???) for the DS. Square Enix making a sports game... scary.

I want Square Enix and Nintendo to make a new Mario RPG for the DS or Revolution!

Pikmin would be a great game for the DS. The touch screen would be an intuitive way to control your Pikmin, and the dual screens could create interesting multiplayer modes.

I would love to see Super Smash Bros. on the DS. The online play would be amazing, and I'm curious as to how Nintendo would utilize the dual screens.

Metal Gear Solid would be great on the DS. You could use the touch screen to select different weapons, and the dual screens would make it much easier to view the radar while playing.

The best Mario Party was the original one. After the N64 games, the series got really redundant. Mario Party would be perfect for the DS!

That show is so twisted and demented. I LOVE IT! It reminds me of Ren and Stimpy. (Happy happy, joy joy!)

By the way, for peopel who don't know: Happy Tree Friends is an ultraviolent cartoon shown on G4 (the so-called videogame channel). It is usually shown after midnight, and is part of their Barbed Wire Buscuit (think Adult Swim and you'll get the idea).

If G4 is a videogame channel, why do they show crap like Street Fury and Fastlane? Those shows have nothing to do with videogames.

General Chat / Re: Which Kong is King?

I heard King Kong was an amazing movie. The special effects look amazing (just look at Kong, he is completely computer generated, and he looks like a real creature).

Peter Jackson is the new Steven Speilberg. King Kong is the new Jurrassic Park.

Peter Jackson did an amazing job on The Lord of the Rings trilogy, so would you expect anything less with King Kong?

I forgot to add:

If Microsoft cannot keep the over-hyped momentum of Xbox 360 going into 2006, then the console will quickly fade away, to be replaced by PS3 and Nintendo "Revolution".

The Xbox 360 has just launched in Japan, and so far it is not selling too well. Once Microsoft releases some of their big Japanese games (like the 2 year old Final Fantasy XI), perhaps Japanese gamers will like the 360.

I just realized, Final Fantasy XI is 2 years old, and it is being re-released on a next-gen console... If I remember correctly, FFIX sold terribly on the PS2 and PC, so why would anyone want to buy it for an Xbox 360?

Video Game Chat / Xbox 360, what do you think?
« on: December 06, 2005, 07:56:29 PM »
Now that the Xbox 360 is here, glitches and all, what do you guys think of the console so far? Is Microsoft promising too much with their HD-era, "take-over-the-entertainment-center" approach, or do we just need to wait and see what types of games will be available.

I personally think that Microsoft has done an excellent job of hyping the 360. Gamers all over the world have lined up to buy the console, sometimes waiting in the cold for hours outside of stores. The games are good, not revolutionary. The graphics are great, but they will improve over time.

The real thing that sets the 360 apart from the competition (Sony) is online gaming. Xbox Live is the de-facto of online services. Microsoft has promised huge things with Xbox Live, and so far they have delivered. The online gaming is integrated so semelessly into the games, that sometimes you don't even realise you are playing online.

The only problem with Xbox 360 is this: Based on many reports on the Internet, it seems the Xbox 360 is a hungry machine. The console reportedly uses a ton of electricity, and the ugly power brick only adds to the problems. The tri-core processor and unique cooling system certainly use up a lot of energy, and that will be bad in the long run for people with limited financial budgets.

Nintendo Revolution Like a "Souped Up Xbox"?
Leo Chan - Tuesday, December 6th, 2005 | 10:40AM (PST)

As opposed to a souped up Xbox 360, or PS3

Since Nintendo is entertaining the notion of shying away from delivering full tech specs for their next-generation Revolution game console, IGN has spoken to developers currently exploring Revolution game development in hopes of discerning some possible info.  Current word from these developers point at the Revolution featuring a maximum of 128MB memory, and the article seems to suggest that this included the additional graphics memory used for textures and whatnot.  Any additional memory expansion will probably not be utilized for gaming.

""To be honest, it's not much more powerful than an Xbox. It's like a souped up Xbox," a major third party source revealed to us. "But it's the controller that makes the difference and the controller is really nice."

Asked if it was developing for Revolution, one major third party source said that it was well past the experimental stage and was evaluating what types of games might work on the platform. "We are looking at it quite differently. It's like another current generation platform for us. But it's such a nice controller that it opens up a lot of possibilities. It's very different and it's very precise.""

The article is quick to note that no actual final Revolution development kit is available yet, as developers are currently resorted to using modified "GameCube-based kits" to play with and draw their not-so-final conclusions.  In addition, developers and industry insiders were not able part with the exact details of the Revolution GPU itself.

For comparative purposes, the GameCube had 24MB of system memory, plus 16MB memory used for game textures.  Of course, IGN's article is wont to compare the Revolution memory to the Xbox 360's considerably meatier 512MB of system memory, though this is shared between the CPU and GPU.  In short, Nintendo doesn't seem to be kidding when they say that sheer graphics horsepower would not be their focus for the Revolution.

It appears the gameplay really is the thing for the Revolution.  If Nintendo celebrity/guru Shigeru Miyamoto is to be believed, there are more suprises in store for the console's controller as well.  Here's hoping Nintendo fans will be impressed once that particular secret is loose.
