Mario Chat / Doki Doki Panic
« on: July 16, 2000, 04:41:35 PM »
Help me...

I know that Doki Doki Panic has little to do with Mario, but I was wondering if 'Doki Doki Panic' is the actual name of the game or is it a translation from Japanese to American English?

Video Game Chat / The next Nintendo
« on: July 11, 2000, 04:20:09 PM »
I'm sure that by now most of you have heard this news, but I just wanted to clear this stuff up for anyone who hasn't.

The August 2000 edition of EGM, Nintendo was reported to have registered trademarks for a system called 'Star Cube'.  The article didn't say which countries these were registered in, and at this point we can't even be sure that this will be the name of a system.  It is an interesting twist, though...

Mario Chat / Origins of Mario (and Luigi)
« on: June 29, 2000, 09:53:17 PM »
Now, I'm sure this question is posed somewhere else on the boards, but where (and to whom) were the Mario Brothers born?

Early in the series, they were plumbers from Brooklyn who fell down a pipe into the Mushroom Kingdom (or something like that).
But is Yoshi's Island, we clearly see the stork deliver infants Mario and Luigi to their loving parents in the Mushroom Kingdom.

What we have here is a fundamental disagreement within the Mario universe!
Opinions?  Anyone? Anyone?

Site Discussion / Language Selection
« on: June 28, 2000, 03:14:03 PM »
Deezer-

I think that a feature you could add to the site that would really boost accessability is  language selection.  Y'know, have some different translations of TMK avilable at the front page?  Maybe some Spanish, German, or Japanese (Katakana, I think).  Just imagine all the international Mario info you could learn and add to the site!  Of course, it would be difficult and time consuming... but nothing that's worth anything comes easy to everyone, right?

Video Game Chat / Poll: Favorite Nintendo Console
« on: June 26, 2000, 02:05:15 PM »
OK, here's a little informal poll to find out which consoles you guys favor-

Nintendo Entertainment System
Super NES
Game Boy Classic/Pocket/Color
Virtual Boy
Nintendo 64

My personal favorite is the SNES- the perfect blend of power, innovation, and creativity; with only half the fat!

Mario Chat / Your first Nintendo machine/Mario game
« on: June 26, 2000, 01:57:48 PM »
I remember well when I got my first Nintendo console, complete with a Mario game...

I was around 2 or 3, and the NES had come out just in time for the Christmas season.  My parents searched all over the state for one of these magic game boxes, and finally found one for their very young and impressionable son.  My favorites were SMB and Duck Hunt, and I was pretty good for a toddler...

And that is why I am the way I am.

Anyone else have tear-jerking stories of their first Nintendo console or Mario game?

Mario Chat / Retro Mario!!!
« on: June 25, 2000, 10:21:40 PM »
I am very sorry to anyone who posted a message similar to this one, but I think it deserves a lot of attention ;)

This topic is somewhat akin to my earlier post, 'Return to Old Skool 2D'.  In my opinion, the older 8/16 bit Mario games are (gasp!) more fun than newer games in some areas.  Now, I was weaned on the NES and grew to become a staunch devotee of the SNES.  However, new material is kinda disappointing to me.  I'm big on storylines, plot, and depth in games, which is a dwindling feature in new games by all developers- except for a few rare gems (Zelda 64).  What do you guys think?

All opinions are welcome and encouraged.

Mario Chat / Beta testers' room in SMW
« on: June 17, 2000, 07:31:45 PM »
Hey, I heard about a secret 'beta testers only' area in Super Mario World.  Anyone else know what I'm talking about?  What's the scoop on this beta tester area?  Deezer, do you have any idea what this might be?

Now, who would eat 30 bag lunches?

Mario Chat / Return to old skool 2D
« on: June 17, 2000, 12:45:25 PM »
I think it would be cool if Nintendo made a Mario game in the style of Super Mario World for the N64.  A purely 2D, sprite-based game using 64 M-bits would absolutely rock, in my opinion.  Just think about how HUGE the game could be!  And because graphics couldn't be astronomical, the makers would have to include great gameplay and replay value.

Of course, most of you probably think that idea is way off the wall.  Can I get a second opinion?

Site Discussion / Question for Deezer about GIFs
« on: June 16, 2000, 09:05:15 PM »
Deezer, I have found a fun and fulfilling new hobby: video game GIF animation!!!  I would like to send my animations to you for inclusion in your vast archive, so that they can be enjoyed by all.

If you like that idea, just say the word and I'll mail 'em over.

General Chat / My official 'hello' to you all!
« on: June 16, 2000, 08:35:36 PM »
Hi all, this is Hinopio.  I've been posting messages for a few weeks now, but I guess I should introduce myself.  I have been a visitor of TMK since..gosh, for about 2 1/2 years now, maybe longer.  I'm new to message boards of all kinds, but this will be the last useless message I will post ;)

Peace all, in the Prince of Peace.

Mario Chat / Why do we love Mario?
« on: June 15, 2000, 01:14:21 PM »
I may be digging too deep here...

I have been a big fan of Mario and other forms of science fiction for some time now, and I was just wondering why it is that we embrace surreality with such enthusiasm.  Is there some deep philosophical reason why we enjoy taking a time out from the real world?  Help from any psychology students is greatly appreciated... :)
