Video Game Chat / Frozen Synapse
« on: August 13, 2011, 12:40:16 PM »
This game's been out for a bit now, but I'm only just buying it now (it's on sale on Steam right now for $12.50). It's a cool-looking simultaneous turn-based strategy game. For those who don't know what that means, it involves both players taking their turn at the same time; each player gives their orders, and then once both have hit the execution button, they see how it works out.

The cool thing is, when you buy the game, regardless of which channel you buy it through, you receive a second copy to give to a friend. Which is why I'm posting this here now.

Whoever can give me the best reason why I should give them a free copy of this game gets it. PM your answers. (Alternatively, if you buy Minecraft this weekend and gift me your free copy you can have my free copy of this.) Regardless of what you do, I'll need your Steam ID if I don't already have you as a friend on there.

Yo.

This doesn't affect me much because I got the game years ago, though it does mean I have a free hat and automatically have a premium account. It's still totally awesome, though, especially for people who haven't played the game and want to get in on war-themed hat-simulating action.

What do you have to say for your people as the Fungi Forums' official modern representative of Canada, Weegee?

Video Game Chat / Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles
« on: April 05, 2011, 12:35:25 PM »
Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles was a homebrew Dreamcast puzzle game (and before that, it was on an open-source handheld called the GP2X), and I found out earlier that they've released a free PC version (for Windows and Linux) and are working on adding netplay. I liked what I played of the Dreamcast version, and the PC version plays pretty well, even running nicely on low-end systems (i.e. netbooks) and featuring mouse support in some modes.

Puzzle games usually work decently on my connection, so let's play some of this once the netplay version comes out.

Yes, it is.

Video Game Chat / Annoying Voiceovers
« on: February 11, 2011, 09:57:59 PM »
Ever played a game where, for some reason or another, you can't stand the voice-acting? Post about it here.

I picked up Super Swing Golf Season Two (the second Pangya Wii game) about a month ago because I loved Pangya Portable, but I've hardly played it because the English voices are awful. All of them. And it would be bad enough just with annoying voices, but these voices don't even match the characters.

Video Game Chat / PSP2 Announced
« on: January 27, 2011, 02:24:52 AM »
They're calling it the "Next Generation Portable" right now, even though NGP is already taken.

EDIT: Full specs.

-Supposed to be as powerful as a PS3 (Capcom demonstrated the console-spec MT Framework on it)
-Dual analog, and they actually appear to be sticks this time
-Touch on both sides (OLED touchscreen and a touchpad on the back)
-Probably no UMD slot (boooooo!), but will apparently use some sort of flash card for new games, and will be capable of playing any downloadable PSP1 games, including an enhanced version of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd with support for the second analog stick
-Will have both 3G and Wi-Fi
-Sixaxis built in
-Two cameras
-No more XMB; new OS called "LiveArea"
-FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY-NINE US DOLLARS No price announced yet

It seems like it's going to be easy to port stuff to the new hardware. Capcom reported that their Lost Planet demo took only two weeks to port to the new hardware, and Epic, who showed Dungeon Defenders for their UE3 demonstration, said they ported it from PS3 in less than a week and without any reduction in quality.

I'm guessing Sony's going to try to price it to be competitive with the iPad, but with what's been revealed about the specs, it seems like they're going to be selling it at as much of a loss as they initially sold the PS3. Either way, for me, no UMD slot means no sale even without knowing price or available software.

Oh, we did get one solid software announcement, just for Turtlekid:

-Exclusive Uncharted game

Sounds like a pretty sweet deal if you're a PS3 owner who also plays stuff on PC. And cross-platform multi is huge - it's like Valve are dragging consoles kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Well, one console, anyway.

A delightfully evil platformer. Play it.

My best score so far is 1,761 because I keep getting tripped up by the Spanish ("¿Cuántos lados de un cubo?" this time).

While GameStop definitely takes sales away from new games by pushing used copies, saying the publishers should get a cut of used sales is just stupid and greedy. There's no other industry where things work that way - how exactly are games any different?

Video Game Chat / Immortal Defense
« on: August 01, 2010, 04:01:46 PM »
Immortal Defense is an excellent indie tower defense game with heavy philosophical themes, over a hundred levels, and a level editor. And it currently costs however much you want to pay for it (minimum $1.75 to cover fees).

Buy it. Play it. Talk about it here.

Getting it out of the other thread.

Anyone aside from Weegee, LD, and myself buy/play it?
