Author Topic: The Non-Tournament Players Tier List (For Brawl)  (Read 11717 times)

« on: October 13, 2008, 02:53:02 PM »
Alright, I'm going to make a basic tier list, and we can debate where each character goes. Instead of it being based on tournaments, its based on how good (or balanced) the character is, in general. While there may be a lot of controversy, hopefully we'll settle on something.

If this isn't in the right section, then please move it.

Well, this is how I picture it:

Top
Marth
Toon Link
Sheik
Captain Falcon
Falco
Lucario

High
Fox
Wolf
Sonic
Luigi
Zelda
Zero Suit Samus
Bowser
Pit (Probably should be lower)
Link
Ganondorf
Jigglypuff *

Middle
Peach * (No idea)
Ike
Mario
Pokemon Trainer *
Samus
Snake
Olimar * (Honestly, I have no idea)
Ness*
Lucas*
Ganondorf *

Low
Yoshi
Ice Climbers
Kirby
Pikachu
Mr. Game & Watch
Meta Knight *
Diddy Kong *
Donkey Kong
Wario
ROB
King Dedede

If I wasn't really sure, I put a * next to it.

Note: Even though there aren't any numbers, they are still in order.

Pikachu should be in the top.

King Dedede is at the absolute bottom? Wait, how are we determining "balanced"?
Remember that your first Goomba boldly you walk? When Mario touched that mushroom being brought up more largely remember that you are surprised? Miscalculate your jump that pit remember that it falls?

Tiers are bunk in the first place. If you're going to use them though, you need actual criteria instead of how good you, Glitchy, are with each character.
Pretty much every character can be used effectively if you put in the time to do so. Also, how is "middle" the third of four categories?
That was a joke.

King Dedede is not balanced, he is focused on Power, not speed. (Although someone did manage to beat me with him) Tiers are inaccurate, opinionated and worthless.

I actually agree with that.  While Wario is fun to play as and worth a few laughs, he's really not very practical.

Opinions on some of my more well-liked characters:

Sheik: Agree.  Fast, with a nice moveset.
Falco: Agree.  Nice jump ability and a shamelessly cheap but effective Final Smash.
Wolf: Sort of agree.  I would put him in the top, but that's because I play as him a lot and he's quite possibly my best character.
Peach: Meh.  I guess she fits there, but she could just as viably be one tier up.
Pikachu: Lol wut?  Put him in the top, man!

I honestly think that Meta Knight, DK, Mr G&W and the Ice Climbers should be higher than that, and that Mario, Ganondorf and Olimar be moved down.

Not that I believe in all this tier crap anyway, but...

QFT. If everyone put the effort they used to create irrelevant tier lists into just picking a character and playing a Brawl, they'd be well on their way to getting better by their own virtues (and maybe unlocking some newer, potentially better characters if they're SSE-haters).

Tiers are stupid, IMO. Basically all the characters can be really great - the only thing separating characters like Mr. Game and Watch from Mario is the level of skill it takes to master them. But seriously, any character can be really hard to beat in the hands of a master.

Just for kicks, however - if I was making a tier list, I would not put Captain Falcon nearly as high as you did. Captain Falcon has seriously been nerfed since the last two games. I'm serious, he was amazing in the original and Melee. Now he's just kind of meh.
What is a mystery? Just go inside my head, and you'll find out.

I've found Ice Climbers, MG&W, and ROB to be great.

Ice Climbers: They're quite powerful if you know how to use them, though it takes a while to master them
MG&W: He is both fast and strong, definitely not the best in either, but a balanced character nonetheless.
ROB: see MG&W, plus great if you learn to utilize his special attacks.

And you forgot Bowser, who should be at the bottom, along with Ganondorf.

As for Meta Knight, [wtd]? I always win when I play as him. I think he should be at least in high.

Meta Knight is really kind of weird and weak but makes up for it in quickness, I guess. He doesn't really have powerful smashes.

Or even Final Smashes, for that matter.

But I'm still a little bit accustomed to Melee's speed, so Fox, Sheik, Meta Knight and the like are usually the ones with the P1 token on them.

I was kidding/using sarcasm. Has nobody else seen the Flash series that revolves around SSB? I forget the name of it, but there's one that has Dr Wright telling everybody to say that Tiers are for Queers!

I personally do not care for tiers. Anybody who is great with any character can beat up another player who is great with any character.

Pikachu deserves a less-than-middle spot, has only MAJOR plus is his projectile attacks in multiple directions. He is however quite slow and lightweight.

No, but I just remembred that there are a small series of SSBB bloopers on Youtube where Mario says "Tier's are for queers!".

Untrue. Thundering an enemy and KOing him up to the heavens is something I'm able to do a lot. I steal KOs this way also.

Pikachu is actually amazingly good. Especially with successive down Bs launching your foes higher and higher into the air and also when you absorb it right next to someone else and give off an even bigger blast. Also, he is not slow in the least.
That was a joke.

I'm not going to mention how excessively cheap that is....., but if I had to, I'd say that (on a scale of 1 to 10 of cheapness) it'd definitely be...OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAND!! *shot*

How did Luigi jump from #18 out of 25 (official tier ranking) in Melee to top 10 in Brawl? (Though personally, I think he was better in Melee..)

I feel he was way improved in Brawl, mostly just because his recovery was un-broken. But I don't play as Luigi that much in either Melee or Brawl, though he used to be my favorite in SSB.

I've seen the Smash Kingdom series.  I got the TR4Q joke,  and I actually agree with Dr. Wright, Tiers are dumb.  It only encourages players to use certain characters more often than other characters.  Play around with all the characters until you find the ones you are really good with.  I'm pretty good with Ganondorf in Melee, and he was near the bottom tier.

My personal view is that, unless your are actually cheating, no method of winning is actually cheap. I have a friend that thinks using the Gamecube C-Stick to do smash attacks in Melee and Brawl is "cheap," which I disagree with. Besides, doing things like only spamming one attack is usually only useful against players a lot less experienced than you. Trying that against a Smash Bros tournament master would just get your butt kicked.

The only thing I'm not sure about is certain techniques like snaking and wave-dashing, which may or may not be glitches - not advanced techniques intended by the actual developers. Regardless, I don't play against people that use them, so it doesn't matter to me whether other players take advantage of them. However, I'm not fond of people who claim that Brawl and Mario Kart Wii were ruined just because they took those things out. Complain about the lack of new content, complain about the items - I don't care about that, but saying that you won't even play those games just because you can't dominate with a questionable technique isn't my cup of tea.
What is a mystery? Just go inside my head, and you'll find out.

I'll try to better explain tiers.
A player using Marth could still get their butt kicked by a more highly skilled player that uses Ganondorf.  However, if these two players were equally skilled, the odds will lean more in Marth's favor.
It pretty much just compares the performance of different characters in tournaments when used by players of the same skill level.

My problem with tiers is that newbies misinterpret its purpose.

My friend who likes Toon Link is annoying and sometimes downright scary with how well she can use that move.

BTW, I've been playing as Snake a bit.  I think he should maybe go one tier up for his mad mine-laying skillz.
