I haven't seen any info anywhere online about this. I found it on MAME, so it would be the "Vs. Super Mario Bros" version.

Here's how I found it, I have screenshots to upload if anyone wants to see them.

Began game normally in 1-1.
played normally to 7-4
Used Mame cheat "set current world now" to go to world 8-4.
Died to activate cheat. Reappeared in 8-4

IT IS NOT A CASTLE LEVEL. Normal "outside" level.

Entered first pipe, it brought me to a gap in the floor, and I Instantly fell and died with no choice

A Little later, an invisible block (with a coin inside) and a beanstalk

This beanstalk comes up from a pipe, and when you climb up it, you're forced off the level, and get stuck.

End of the level has flagpole like a normal outside level

But - Instead of ending the game like 8-4 should....

World 8-5? Notice the bubbles as if it's an underwater level...

It IS an underwater level, although there's no water (the background is black)

Those blue (?!?) question mark blocks cannot be broken

Lots of strange graphics throughout the level. Blue spaces are gaps in the floor

Going down second pipe freezes the game, or alternately, takes you to a blue gap, where you die

There are also no enemies in this level

Look! No Flag on the Flagpole at the end of the level!

Touch the flagpole...

And instead of sliding down it, you float to the castle door, and enter it. The game just stops here. It doesn't freeze, but the timer stops, and you're inside the castle, (you can still see your air bubbles)

Sometimes you miss the castle door and get stuck at the edge of the screen.

Has anyone else seen this?

Heh, kind of reminds me of a text file I did on the "True Lost Levels" of SMB1, where I took three GG codes, modded one, and visited worlds 9 up to 50. Pretty cool, and one of them was an overworld version of a castle (3-4 I think), a quite unstable level. It was hard to get past the first few platforms (usually there are fire things there; the only enemies were randomly placed koopas) because the game would jerk (the status bar on the top would go half or more off of the screen, to the left), and then freeze up. Quite curious, and one of the few unstable areas (9-1, that level, and another one exactly like 9-1). I will try to find that sometime, when I go download the MAME rom for it XD

EDIT: And screenshots, please ^.^!

Looks like the MAME cheat didn't work correctly.

An easy way to do it:

- Go to 1-4 (I actually did it at 4-4)
- Use the cheat, and enter "8"
- Die
- You should appear at 6-2 instead of 8-4.
- Beat it and...

Yeah.

I'm not 100% on this, but I think that all levels that shouldn't be accessed regularly are just other levels modified.

Not entirely. Only most of them. Sometimes, you can end up in rooms that were never meant to be in the actual data, and endlessly fall to your doom. There was a world like this when I did "The True Lost Levels"... yes, here is the "Death Room" world I encountered:

[W14-1] World 14-1 (E-1): Who knows? - Pit of death with a koopa pal, ? block, and the castle music. Can't really tell how stable it is because it is over it 2 seconds. Avoid this if you know what is best for you.

Here is the overworld 3-4 I encountered:

[W20-1] World 20-1 (K-1): VERY UNSTABLE - An overworld version of 3-4. Too bad it isn't stable...

And here is 9-1 and clones, for the heck of it:

[W9-1] World 9-1 (9-1): VERY UNSTABLE - A water version of 6-2, which tends to freeze often. Sometimes random platforms fill the area. Takes longer to freeze if you move less. Never finished this one, never will.
[W49-1] World 49-1 ((triangle sliver)-1): VERY UNSTABLE - Just like World 9-1. Avoid it. Now.

That's one of the weirdest things I've ever seen. I wish I could experience that firsthand.

Same here. I love all of the mysterious stuff that shouldn't exist, like Missingnos and M blocks in Red/Blue.

Who knows? Maybe, just maybe there is, infact, a world -2. I wish I can play world 8-5 in the home console game.
Unless you are cloned, you do not need to look like a midget version of your dad. Okay Bowser Jr.?

I actually played that game yesterday! I spent a dollar on it. They changed a lot of stuff to make it harder, I only made it to 2-4. But I want that arcade machine in my room.

Who doesn't want a full-sized arcade machine in their room? Get ready for Galaga!

If I could have ONE arcade game in my room it'd be VS.SMB. I wouldn't disable the coin slot, I'd just open the compartment and always have the quarters I need. Then when company comes, I lock the compartment.
