Best: Super Mario Galaxy hands down. That observatory music was a nice orchestra piece and created a great mood.

TTYD gets an honorable mention as well for again, fitting the mood of the place exactly. Rogueport's a grand town, but has sinister and slimy characters all over the place, and the music just captured this perfectly.

Worst: Partners in Time. It's been said already...

I agree, PiT was just a cheap remix of the SM64 theme.

Except that was the idea. It's Peach's Castle, after all.
That was a joke.

BEST: Super Mario Sunshine

WORST: Paper Mario

The music in the paper mario games is real cheap.  But SMS has such refreshing music.  It makes you want to visit the sun drenched paradise of Isle Delfino!
Probably likes Sonic games better than anyone else on the fungi forums.

The orchestration is thin and the samples are grating to the ear. Maybe that's what he meant.
That was a joke.

That gives it a cartoony feel. So just because it's not orchestrated with a huge team of musicians that means it isn't good?

It should be obvious that that's not what I mean by "orchestration", since most games don't have orchestral music. But if it isn't, I mean that the chords aren't voiced in a way satisfactory to my ear, and the choice of timbres doesn't always fit together well. Some of the melodies are catchy but I find a lot of them dull due to the lackluster arrangement.
That was a joke.

Define "cheap"

Cheap music is that video game music/lame techno music.  The chiptunes in the gameboy color games were cheap.  The music in Super Paper Mario is cheap.  Most handheld game's music is cheap.  Take Banjo Kazooie and Tooie for example, they have some real nice music for a video game!  Also Super Mario Galaxy has some high quality tunes.  BK and BT music is the best music in a video game that I have ever heard.

You haven't listened to much, then.
Also, it makes no difference what hardware the music is made with. How that hardware is used, however, does.
That was a joke.

I have listened to alot.  I've been playing video games much longer than you think my friend.  I know what crap music is and good music is.

Hey, thin characters, thin music. But I like PM's music, personally.

I have to agree that SPM's music is 75-100% lame. Paper Mario + Paper Mario 2 had awesome music, though.

Actually, I liked SPM's music too (and you don't necessarily have to quote me if I'm right above).
