Video Game Chat / Re: Stages for Super Smash Bros. 4

I liked Frigate Orpheon.  I'd still rather have a sweet Mother Brain/Tourian level, but Orpheon had a lot of cool effects, and the parasite Queen is one of the most memorable moments in the Prime series.  It was cool and a little surprising to see a stage based on Metroid Prime.

On the subject of Kirby stages, I'd really dig something yarn-styled to represent Epic Yarn.

Yeah, I'd really like to see some Mario Galaxy influence in Smash 4.  A stage of mini-planetoids with varying gravity would be sweet.

I think one stage per character is a reasonable expectation/goal.  If the character is worthy enough for Smash Bros., they should be worthy of a level.  The previous Smash games basically follow this formula, with some noteworthy exceptions, mainly the unfortunate lack of Bowser's Keep or Ganon's Tower.  Would love to see a couple villain-themed levels in Smash 4.

I would say not caring about Smash Bros. and not caring about tournament players can very definitely be two different things.  I'm a huge fan of SB and I have no desire to ever play at the tournament level.  What can I say, I like items and I like interesting levels.  And hey, the tournament players are all set as long as Final Destination is still available.

Mario Chat / Re: K'NEX MARIO KART
« on: August 05, 2011, 01:22:03 PM »
Thanks for the review!  It's good to know that:

A. You DO get the character's legs with the karts.  I was worried that since they aren't "needed" for the model they wouldn't be included"
B. The bikes aren't super sturdy.

I might just hold off and wait until they show/announce some other karts/bikes, that way I'm not buying a bunch of the same vehicle with different colors and minifigs.  I was originally going to grab a Mario and a Luigi, one on a bike and one in a kart, but if the bikes are a little fragile, I'll probably wait until some alternate karts are available.  While I agree that the accuracy of the minifigs is a plus, I think I'd rather have less accurate minis with Lego-quality blocks and design.  Plus, seeing Mario characters shoe-horned into the minifig template would be fun. :)

So we have a thread for characters you want in Smash Bros. 4, but it's always been my thought that the stages are just as important (maybe even MORE important?) than the roster of characters.

Plus, a recent play-through of the N64 original (not to mention combing through the Smash Bros. Wiki) has reignited my love of a couple past stages that I'd LOVE to see return, mainly the original SMB 1 Mushroom Kingdom from Smash 64, and Brinstar Depths from Melee.  If we see Past Stages in Smash 4, those are FOR SURE at the top of my want list.

As for new stuff, I've always wanted to see a stage based on the Mother Brain boss fight from the end of Metroid and Super Metroid.  Pools of acid, laser blasters, destructible Zebetite barriers and most importantly, a big, destructible Mother Brain!  In general I'd like to see more destructible environments in Smash 4.

So what do you want?  Any old school stages you'd love to see return?  What are some new concepts for stages you'd like to see explored?

Yep, totally grabbing one of these.  I'd rather they be Lego, but this knock-off is better than nothing!  Any chance of non-vehicle sets?  Peach's Castle, Bowser's Keep, stuff like that would ruuuuuuuuuuuuule. To anyone that's bought one, how are K'Nex's blocks?  Are they kind of cheap and crappy feeling like Mega Blocks?  I'd expect better from K'Nex, but you never know...

Funnily enough, she never specifies what job she's looking to get.

Hahaha really?  Wow, nevermind.  I can't imagine Valve is looking to pay someone to do anime fan-art.

Yeah, it seems silly to not have the GBA games available for sale.  That seems like an easy revenue stream, I don't see why they'd cut it off.  The Ambassadors are already getting that content for free, why not offer it to everyone else at a price?

WHOA.  When you said chin and puns I thought we were talking chins of the double variety and puns of the fat-joke variety.  That picture... shattered those expectations.  I've never seen anything like that before in my life.  She's actually really pretty other than her chin from another plane of reality.

What position is she applying for within the company?  If she's looking to be an artist, she needs to make this look a whole hell of a lot better.  If she did that, I could see this actually working.  Otherwise, I doubt they're looking for new people for their creative staff, and I can't imagine this would get her a job doing any kind of programming.  I could see their Promotions department maybe digging this, and the enthusiasm would probably be appealing to their Testing department.  Cool, outside the box companies (like Valve) can really appreciate strange applications like this, it just needs to be... better.

It's REALLY weird to finally see a numbered Mario Kart, but 7 has some significance as a lucky number, so I can see why they went with it.  Also, not having "3D" in every title is nice.  Whenever I see "3D" in a game's title I instantly associate it with [dukar]ty PlayStation 1 games.

Hmm, I think it looks more like SMB3 and SMG had a baby... and that makes me SUPER excited for this game.  Why yes, I WOULD like a combination of my two favorite Mario games!

I've been reading the Super Smash Bros. Wiki, and apparently Meowth (along with Pit, Peach, and a few others) was considered for the original SSB, but was cut due to time/budget constraints.  I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks he'd be awesome, and I'd love to see him in Smash 4, filling the role left by the likely-leaving Lucario.  Bonus, since Meowth has a bit of a legacy (being a Generation 1 Pokemon and a major player in the anime) I could see him sticking around.

Sakurai has said he'd like to develop Smash 4 for 3DS and WiiU, and that the two games would have some sort of connectivity.  Now this I think is a very cool opportunity.  WiiU can have the big, epic grand Smash 4, with a huge roster and such, and 3DS Smash can have a smaller-scale more "personal" experience.  What about this: Maybe 3DS Smash is a sort of "Heroes and Villains" edition, with a cast that looks something like this:

Mario
Bowser
Donkey Kong
King K. Rool
Link
Gannondorf
Samus
Ridley
Kirby
Dedede
Fox
Wolf
Pikachu
Meowth (Yeah, he's officially part of my list of characters I want in Brawl now)
Pit
Medusa
Capt. Falcon
Samurai Goroh
Little Mac
King Hippo

Basically, any Nintendo series with a Smash-worthy hero and villain is represented by their respective hero and villain. Of course, this would leave some classic smashers high and dry, like Mr. Game and Watch or even Yoshi.  I don't know enough about the Advance Wars or Fire Emblem or Mother/Earthbound guys to come up with a respective playable villain, but if they have one,  throw 'em in!  I think this could be one way to make the 3DS and WiiU Smash Bros. games unique from one another.  Being a handheld/portable title, having a smaller cast list makes sense: this is Smash Bros. Lite, on-the-go.  Connectivity?  If your WiiU wirelessly communicates with your 3DS copy of Smash 4, you can unlock some of the exclusive characters from 3DS for use in WiiU, and vice versa.

I wouldn't say Melee obsoleted the original. There are many awesome things in it that haven't returned in Melee, including several stages, attacks, items (the Bumper especially), and Board the Platforms.

Oh my GOD I miss Board the Platforms.  Race to the finish as well.  Smash 4 needs to put those mo-fos back into Classic mode.

I'm hoping we get an old-school obscure odd ball or two.  Like Wart or Tatanga, maybe Mouser.  The only other one we've ever gotten in this series that comes to mind is ROB.

I really don't get the mindset that having a huge roster in Smash 4 would somehow make Brawl any more obsolete than Brawl made Melee or Melee made Smash64.  Die hards still have Melee tournaments.  If you want to keep playing Brawl, Smash 4 having a huge awesome roster won't stop you from playing Brawl or make it "obsolete."

In the Smash Bros. games I'd say the level line-up is just as important as the character line-up, and with each installment that HAS changed drastically from game to game, with only a small handful of past levels returning.  Not only that, but the fighting engine itself changes with each installment, so I wouldn't worry about Smash 4 being a cookie-cutter sequel, unless they change their development style for it.
