Video Game Chat / Re: All right now who do ya want in Smash Bros. 4
« on: July 09, 2011, 10:47:19 AM »
Oh man, I gotta disagree there.

Some logos are more important, and WAY more famous than others, and I think they deserve more representation.  Mario, Pokemon and Zelda absolutely earned their high number of characters in the Smash Bros. series, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

People consider MvC2 lousy?  I'm not being a smart-ass, I'm really asking. I'm not on the tournament fighter scene at all, but I was under the impression MvC2 was a classic and a huge mainstay in the world of tourney fighters.  Personally I think big rosters are great, they give a fighter a lot of replay value and depth.  Granted there is a point where it would start to get ridiculous, but if you factor in the characters that wouldn't "need" to return (clones) and the ones that probably won't return (Snake and Sonic), I don't think we're at that ridiculous point yet.

I love Smash Bros. because it has famous faces like LInk and Pikachu battling alongside old school, obscure weirdos like the Ice Climbers and Game and Watch.  I'd be VERY sad if Smash 4 changed that.  I could see Lucas, Ike, Lucario, Wolf and Toon Link getting the ax, but like the jump from Melee to Brawl, most of them would probably get replaced by a new, similar character.  Which is a-ok with me.  Sakurai can just confirm Zoroark taking over Lucario's spot if you ask me.  Other than that, I'd like to see the following added:

First party characters:
-Ridley
-LIttle Mac.  Just like Pit debuted as a trophy before being playable, I think Little Mac deserves the same.  Punch-Out Wii is an underrated gem.
-Samurai Goroh.  Like Metroid, the F-Zero series needs some love, stat!
-Zoroark to take over Lucario's spot, as mentioned above.
-Someone from Advance Wars.  I'm not familiar with the series, but it has a great visual style and has been pretty successful for a few years now. It's earned it's place, and it's flagship character could be a good fill-in for Snake, if he's not coming back.  Actually, just going by visuals alone, I'd probably pick Sami.  She's cool and looks bad-ass.  It's always nice to add a girl to the roster, and she's pretty different from the ladies we currently have.
-Crazy, out of left-field surprise character (ala Ice Climbers, Game and Watch, Pit): Mach Rider.  The gritty grizzled road war from a post-apocalyptic future would DEFINITELY add some flavor to the line-up, and maybe, like Sami, do a good job at filling in the void Snake may be leaving.  Also he could race motorcycles with Wario. ;)

Wow, I thought there were more first party characters that I wanted in the game, but I guess not?  I think this is a pretty reasonable/plausible list of additions.  Really, it's all about Ridley for me.  Metroid is my favorite series, and Ridley is essentially Metroid's Bowser or Ganondorf.  His moveset writes itself.  Yeah he's huge, but so is Bowser.  The difference is that Ridley is near-skeletal, he's super lanky.  I feel like having him being (relatively) low-weight would go a long way to balancing him, even making him a tough character to master (huge and low-weight?  In Smash Bros?  Yikes!).

I think alternate costumes would go a long way to adding (albeit artificial) roster depth.  We've only started to see this in Smash Bros, with Wario's costume change, and some color swaps that are based on other characters:  Peach has had a color swap for Daisy, Mario and Luigi have had color swaps for different power-ups and Wario/Waluigi, Samus has had color swaps based on her other suits, etc.  But why stop with one character and some meaningful color swaps?  Let's get a full-blown Daisy or Rosalina in there!  Raccoon Mario!  Bee Luigi!  Oni-Link!  Dark Suit Samus!  Dry Bowser!  Looie (for Olimar)! Different generations of Pokemon trainers!  Just like with Wario's two costumes, the character stays the same, but visually they're a little different.  I'd love to see this.  Hell, they could be unlockable even!  Honestly, at this point, I think I'd prefer this over trophies.  I mean, what's left to make trophies of?  The trophy galleries are wonderful, but I feel like they must be a pretty big chunk of development time too.  With alternate costumes, we still get that taste of Nintendo history, but in the form of something we can enjoy while playing the game.

If third party characters come back I'd like to see:
-Classic Mega Man.  The fact that he wasn't in Brawl blows my mind.  But maybe we can fix that in Smash 4. :)
-Simon Belmont.  Maybe not as much of a "duh" pick as Mega Man, but not far off.  Simon (and importantly, his level) would rule.
-Pac-Man.  Can't hardly get more classic than good ol' Pac-Man.  His level would be awesome too.

I can take or leave Sonic and Snake.  They were both great, and did an awesome job of mixing things up, but I won't be crying if they sit out Smash 4 either.  It WAS pretty rad to finally see Mario and Sonic beat each other's faces in, even if it was about 15 years late.:)

I could also take or leave Final Smashes.  I really enjoyed them in Brawl, but I won't be too worked up if they don't come back either.

Please, for the love of God, change Mario's down+B to an actual attack again.  I don't even care what it is, as long as it's better than a non-damaging FLUDD blast.  Luigi needs to have an attack or 2 based on the Poltergust.  Maybe his final smash?  I'd like that.

The first thing that came to mind was the escort/hacking mission towards the end of the original Goldeneye 007.  Natalya is a bullet magnet, and needs to use computers faster.  It's been ages since I've played this, but I remember it being mind-warpingly hard and a pain in the ass.

I can't believe Metroid Prime was mentioned, but not the lame fetch-quests tacked on at the end.  I never thought of the Chozo Ghosts as unfun or tacked on, but collecting the artifacts in 1 and the keys in 2 struck me as pretty lame.  Definitely on par with Wind Waker's fetch-quest.

I don't know why, but the airboat stuff in Half-Life 2 stopped me dead in a run.  It's not terrible or anything... just not as cool as the rest of the game, I guess.

Mario Chat / Re: Mario Kart 3DS Casting Call!

Oh man, good call!  I totally remember that.  I mean you could always shrink him down, but to me, being humongous is part of what makes Petey Petey.  Though to be honest, we haven't seen him since Double Dash!! I don't think we'll be seeing him again anyway.  In an abstract way, I feel like Funky Kong kind of fills his spot, as MK's big outrageous party animal.  MKWii also had a kart sorta based on Petey, so I feel like his legacy lives on that way.

Yeah if I was interested in these I'd definitely be importing or pirating them.  Luckily, I don't care for JRPGs that don't have Pokemon or Mario in the title.  This is lame though.  If they're worried about poor sales, they could just do a small shipment... it just seems like a waste since they're going to the trouble of translating them to English.

My only other thought is that maybe Nintendo wants to release them for Wii U?  Or maybe even 3DS?  If that's the case, I think it's a smart move.  Unfortunately, I doubt that's the case.

Considering that a derivative of Petey showed up in both Mario Galaxies, I don't think it'd be a huge stretch to see him come back for MK3D.  I can take him or leave him, but he definitely adds some variety to the roster.  I'd love to see a Hammer Bro, but they're probably considered too similar to Koopa Troopas...

Oh yeah, it doesn't bother me, and usually Nintendo's good at matching a character to a course that makes sense.  Wario  and Waluigi being loud, chaotic and obnoxious fit well with various stadiums and arenas, Yoshi and DK usually get jungle-themed, mountainous areas, Koopa Troopa Beach always made sense to me, etc.... really the only one that truly struck me as "hey let's slap a character on this and call it a day" is Toad's Turnpike.  And when you're one of the coolest Mario Kart courses of all time, you can get away with that sort of thing.  <3 Toad's Turnpike.  I'd REALLY like to see that come back as a Retro Track.

While later Mario Kart games had similarly themed levels, there's something about Toad's Turnpike that makes it special.  Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I think it's a lot of different things.  The music is fantastic, the level itself is simple, letting you focus on weaving between cars, and you gotta love it in Mirror Mode.  One thing that I really dig though is that it feels like it takes place in the "real"/"our" world, and that's something that the later "big city" courses never captured.

143
I'd like to see The Mole Train from Donkey Kong Country Returns as a stage.

This would be awesome.

I think they do just slap a character onto a course design for Mario Kart levels.  Toad's Turnpike anyone?

In the next Smash Bros. Samus will probably have variations on "THE BABY" and "ADAM" for all her taunts and victory poses.  Instead of tripping, she'll freeze up and start bawling every now and then for no apparent reason.  Her special moves will all be unavailable when the battle starts and unlock over time as Adam authorizes her to use them.

Other M makes me want to pull out all my hair.  If Smash 4 makes absolutely no reference to that turd souffle whatsoever I'll be the happiest camper alive.  I doubt we'll be that lucky.  WHY TEAM NINJA, WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?

Metroid Zero Mission had a super-final boss too!  Mecha-Ridley ramps way up in difficulty if you have 100% items when you face him (I think... it's been a while).  The Metroid series in general is another great example of variable endings.

146
It made no sense tactically, but I always liked pairing up Mario and Luigi.  I really like when they're both featured in a game and can work together as a team, and are treated like equals.  It's a nice throwback to the roots of the main series.

Wario is one of my favorite characters of all time, but I never paired him with Waluigi.  Obviously it makes sense tactically, but it was more to do with the fact that I really don't dig Waluigi... or that I can't imagine anyone would choose to join forces with Wario.  So I usually paired Wario with someone I think he could bully into being his flunkie, usually a Koopa, maybe a Toad.

So yeah comparing THAT Wario to today's, it's safe to say our man Wario's undergone a little villain decay (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainDecay).  How do you feel about this?  Villain decay or no, Wario's by far one of my favorite characters, but after beating Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land, I was left yearning for the cackling maniac of yore.

The upside is that he's still a gross, greedy, narcissistic con man, so it's not like the character's been completely changed.  I just miss his villainy/anti-heroics.  The other upside is that this toned-down Wario has not one, but two series (Wario Land and Wario Ware), plus some prestigious guest spots (Mario sports games, all but the first Mario Kart, and finally made into Smash Bros. with Brawl).  I get the feeling that if he was still as scary and possibly evil as he used to be depicted, he probably wouldn't have the appeal to headline two different series.

The downside is that I think this change in tone has led the Wario Land series astray.  A big part of the fun of the first two (and best two, in my opinion) is the atmosphere and character of the games.  You're playing a villain (or at best, anti-hero) and the environments, NPCs, story and gameplay all reflect that.  In the first two Wario Land games Wario is strictly out to steal more treasure or get revenge... usually both.  But in the later games, yeah he's hunting for treasure, and he's only doing good to increase his own wealth, but the scenarios he was plopped into could have fit almost any character.  They felt a lot more generic.  They're still fine games for the most part, but that Wario personality seems to have slipped away a little bit.

Mario Chat / Variable Endings

So I just finished replaying Luigi's Mansion and Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land.  I got (I think) the second best endings on both of them.  Realizing this, I hopped online to see not only what the best ending looked like, but also some of the hilariously bad endings too.  I want to see Luigi's tent, and Wario's birdhouse!  I was a little bummed to see that, as far as I could tell, there weren't any such image galleries on this site.  Anybody else think those type of galleries would make a cool addition to the site?

I love these endings, they're a cool incentive to keep playing or replay the game.  I really dig games that challenge you to dig up as much treasure as possible, and for some reason I really like a game ending with the hard-working protagonist earning a sweet new pad. How do you feel about this type of ending in general?

Mario Chat / Re: How Would YOU Do Mario Kart?
« on: June 24, 2011, 04:57:01 PM »
Oh man, I'm hoping coins affect your speed like they did in SMK and Super Circuit.  Actually, why not have it both ways?  You bank any coins you have at the end of the race, but the more you have during the race, the faster you go?  That'd be awesome.

I think double-karts would be awesome to have back... as a separate multiplayer mode.

I go back and forth on how many racers should be on the field in a grand prix.  Earlier courses aren't really designed for a larger group, but it's fun to have more karts on the field... until they item spam.  But with coins, and presumably a limited number of items (ala SMK)/better regulation of super-powerful items, we can cut down on item spam.  Also a large group of racers for grand prix also lends itself well to large online multiplayer races, which would be awesome.  With a field of 12, and if one of the online modes is a Double Dash mode, you could have 24 people all racing together online!  I think that'd be pretty sweet.

And there goes the last vestiges of my enthusiasm for the Wii-U.

I keep seeing this mentality pop up on the internet, and it cracks me up.  The system is 1+ year away.  No specs have been announced, no launch line-up has been announced, any games that ARE in development are at too early of a stage to show.  But tons of people online are calling the system a failure.  That would be like if I said "Man PlayStation 4 sucks, Sony really blew it there."  Or maybe "I can't believe what a piece of crap X-Box 720 is.  What a flop!"

They announced new Smash Bros..  It's not like they said it was X% complete or gave a release date.  Sakurai's stressed because Iwata made the announcement before he had a team in place, but also recognizes that this is a good way to get a team together.  Smash 4 (I like Rumble, do you guys like Rumble?  Super Smash Bros. Rumble!) is probably about 2-3 years away.  That's a long time, and I can't imagine it'll be available at launch (though I could definitely see Wii U getting pushed back), but it's good to know Nintendo recognizes what an important series this is, and is keeping it a top priority.
