Mario Chat / Re: Super Mario 64 turns 15 today!

Played through a bunch of this tonight. I was surprised how little I cared about goofing around outside... I know where the real fun is, I guess.

It's kind of crazy how well I still know this game. It's not surprising, I played the [dukar] out of it, mostly because the N64 in the early years was so sparse. I got all 7 stars on the first two worlds, 2 on the next two worlds, got three secret stars, switched on the wing cap switch, got the red coin star in the first Bowser level, tossed his ass into a bomb, and caught MIPS before I realized I'd blown like two and a half or three hours. If my N64 controllers weren't so crusty and worn, I'd probably have played even longer.

I'll never forget the crushing disappointment of not getting an N64 the year it came out. I was devastated. My parents wanted to hint to me that it wasn't happening by letting me rent the system a couple days before hand. Either I didn't figure it out or I was too horrified to understand what was going on. That was rough. I got it a couple months later for my birthday though, which was awesome. I got Mario Kart 64 with it, which was annoying at first, but I had played the [dukar] out of Super Mario 64 during rentals (I actually beat it... not 120 stars though), so it was probably a smart move on my parents' part. And of course, MK64 is ****ing amazing. Plus I found out later they stayed up all night the night before my birthday playing it themselves.

I remember during one of those rentals, when my sister was in her "cool" phase and liked to rip on my for playing video games, she and her boyfriend sat together on the couch and watched me play Mario 64. For a WHILE, too. I don't think they were screwing around, because I was literally setting like two feet away from them, but I was probably too engrossed in the game to notice. I mean, I would have noticed, I think they were just kind of digging the game. It was such a weird, new thing at that time, and before her cool phase, my sister and I played the [dukar] out of Mario 3 and World together, I think this kind of threw her for a loop.

When I booted up my game to play tonight, I still had two save files with 120 stars on them. I think I just copied my 120 star files for "safety" but it was pretty cool seeing them still there. It was amazing how much came back to me. Little things, neat little surprises and tricks I had committed to memory. The owl that pops out of the tree on the second level, the treasure chests the electrocute you if you pick them in the wrong order, where to place the cannon aiming reticule to get a perfect shot to the tree on the floating island, luring the big ugly eel out of his cave. Awesome stuff.

I've been kind on a huge Mario Kart kick lately, and since this is the N64's birthday too, I'm thinking about booting MK64 for old time's sake...

Yeah, the DS version looks really nice.  The higher poly count just gives a rounder, more Mario-looking Mario.  The original of course is still my favorite, but I can't deny the DS puts out a great-looking game.

Ha, derp! I just realized that if Mario 64 is turning 15, so is the N64 itself!  Happy birthday, Nintendo 64! Man, what a system.

Yeah, I don't think that's weird at ALL, even if it were purely for nostalgia reasons you'd be justified.  But I know I was never able to get used to the wonky controls, and I know they added a bunch of stuff to the DS version (and fixed up the graphics a bit, right?).

One thing that stood out to me about the original was that it's really just Mario, MIPS and a couple Toads in an empty castle.  I guess to some (including the Mario 64 DS development staff) that might feel desolate, but I really like that solitude.  The feeling of adventuring alone was very different for a Mario game.  It lent SM64 an air of mystery, giving it an almost Metroid-ish vibe.

Here comes a lethal dose of audio-based nostalgia: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ke-8vdm9IfA

Looks like World "officially" turned 20 last year, with it's Japan release of November 21, 1990, but it celebrates 20 years in the US (oh my god I feel old) August 23rd this year.  So many big game anniversaries this year!

Nintendo's making a big deal about Zelda's 25th anniversary, but Metroid has it's 25th this year, and so does the Japanese release of Kid Icarus!

Happy Birthday, Mario!

One of the most revolutionary and beloved games of all time turns 15 today!  September 29th marks the 15th anniversary of the US release.

So yeah!  Let's reminisce, celebrate, whatever!  I think I'll dig out my old cartridge and goof around the castle a bit after work tonight.  Hopefully my N64 sticks aren't too blown out, and hopefully I don't get too wrapped up in the magic and lose too much sleep.

Ha!  Quake shares it's birthday with Mario 64!  Two hugely important games on the same day!

Why is it sad that Miis will be used?  Miis are one of Nintendo's biggest successes in years, and I think Wuhu Island would make a great stage.  Should a Mii be a playable character?  Maybe!  Miis have done so much at this point they'd be pretty easy to invent a move set for.  To me Smash Bros. games are a celebration of Nintendo's long and varied history, good and bad, and I'd hardly calls Miis bad.

I think this is an exciting time to brainstorm about possibilities for this game, because Sakurai and his team aren't even to this stage of development yet!  In theory we'll be hashing out ideas at the same time as the team actually working on the game.

I can't help but wonder who'll get cut and who'll come back.  If the jump from Melee to Brawl is any indication, I could see us losing one of the Fire Emblem characters, Lucario getting switched out for Zoarork, and maybe losing Wolf, similarly to how we lost Dr. Mario.

There really haven't been all that many new franchises since Pikmin.  Animal Crossing already has coverage with the Smash Town level.  Other than that there's the Mii series games, ExciteTruck/Bots and... I think that's it?  I'd say Advance Wars deserves a playable character/level.

Playable Ridley.  I don't care if he has to be scaled down a little bit, but I want 'im.  Metroid needs more than one character, and Ridley is IT!  If Bowser can be playable, Ridley can too.

Who knows if we'll see non-Nintendo guest characters again?  It'd be cool, but I can also live without 'em.  Snake and Sonic would of course be welcome faces again, but I'd for sure trade Snake for:
-classic Mega Man
-Pac-Man
-Simon Belmont

Don't get me wrong, Snake is super cool, but I feel like his contributions are much more about modern(ish) gaming and cinematic gaming, whereas the dudes listed are very old school, and more in line with Nintendo design philosophies.  All three of those dudes would also have KILLER levels.

Er...I think CrossEyed was kidding.

Huh, it looked like a legit statement to me, probably reinforced by the fact that one of the Mortal Kombat games featured a kart-racing minigame, so while crazy, it doesn't seem totally outside the realm of possibility.

Well, to sorta kinda steer this thread back on track, assuming MK3D has more than 8-12 characters, I'd love to see more non-princess female characters.  Past MK games got off to a great start with Toadette and Birdo, but Pauline and Capt. Syrup would both make cool additions to the cast too, bringing personalities vastly different from the current female racers available.

Is that plausible though?  The Smash Bros. games are huge: huge roster, huge level selection, and essentially countless trophies/stickers/whatever.  Smash 4 might not have *more* content than Brawl, but it's still expected to have a ****ton, plus rebalancing returning characters/balancing new ones.  I guess what I'm getting at is either:

-A small amount of development would go towards Smash Kart, giving us a half-baked racing experience or one that's very light on content.
Or
-A large amount of development would go towards Smash Kart, and the main modes suffer.

I think replacing Subspace Emissary with karting is a nice idea, but I'm betting the reason we got SE at all was because it worked pretty much the same as the main modes of play, whereas Smash Kart would be NOTHING like the main modes.  So while SE was like developing an alternate mode within Smash Bros., Smash-Kart would be like developing an entirely different game... one that would eat up development resources that could/should be going towards the "real" Smash Bros, and one that would essentially compete with Nintendo's own Mario Kart.

Yeah, as neat as Smash Kart would be, I don't think we'll ever see it happen.  Mario Kart's a lucrative franchise, and Nintendo won't cannibalize it with a similar game.  Other than the occasional reference to other series (playable R.O.B. in MKDS and a mini Blue Falcon-kart in Wii) MK3D is likely to stay strictly Mario universe, as has the entire franchise up til now.

Which gets kind of a mixed reaction from me.  I love the Mario universe and I love that MK has stayed squarely focused in the Mario universe... but at the same time, I love pretty much the whole, broader Nintendo universe.  Smash Bros. has shown that wildly different Nintendo series can interact with each other in a fun way, and the thought of Mario, Samus, Link and Pikachu racing each other through Corneria City under attack from Andross' forces is pretty [darn] awesome.  Just some fun food for thought.

I wonder if we'll see ROB in MK3D.  I wouldn't mind him coming back, but I wonder if his role in Smash Bros. Brawl has established him as a non-Mario character.  I could see it going either way.

Yeah, I've had to go through MKWii and unlock everything again and there's a special kind of rage triggered by getting hammered with five items in a row.  It feels like the game is punishing you for racing well.  I'd rather have the racers get better AI in higher difficulties than get blasted with [dukar] over and over again.

I don't know if this is nostalgia goggles, but I feel like the handheld Mario Karts are a little more focused on racing and a little less and item barrages.  The reintroduction of coins really backs this up too.

Mario Kart Wii was awesome.  I think overall I like MKDS better, and I'll always have a special place in my heart for MK64, but MK Wii ruled.  Tricks and bikes freshened up the game a lot.  They just need to lay off the item-spamming.

Oh yeah, that's what I pictured too.  I doubt we'll see that, but it'd be super cool, and would open the door to LOTS of characters.  More examples:

Koopa Troopa->Dry Bones, Parakoopa
Hammer Bro->Fire Bro, Boomerang Bro
Shy Guy->Snifit

Maybe tonight I'll finally put out my dream cast list and my estimated actual cast list.

E. Gadd also got indirectly referenced in Sunshine, as the creator of both FLUDD AND Bowser Jr.'s magic brush.  Clearly the guy has some staying power, but we'll have to see whether that's enough to get him a spot in MK3D.  I think he'd be a good fit, but I could just as easily see him getting the shaft.  Especially if MK3D follows the precedent set by Super Circuit and MKDS: handheld Karts tend to have fewer racers than their console counterparts.
