Mario Chat / Re: Mario coming to a Happy Meal near you!
« on: September 03, 2006, 10:39:22 PM »
The only one that looks like something I wouldn't be embarrassed to have is the little ball-Mario.  The music playing Yoshi is pretty cool too.  Why only Mario, Yoshi and DK toys though?  I seriously think that wave of Super Mario Bros. 3 toys McDonald's did way back when are still the best Mario toys to come out of a kid's meal.

I guess what I'm saying is that I'd rather just have a line of high-quality action figures than Happy Meal toys.

I actually liked Superstar Saga more than Partners in Time.  The gameplay felt tighter, and I liked the story a little better.

Daisy has never looked better.

Heh, this is the first time I haven't found Daisy irritating and lame. :)

Mario Chat / Re: New Mario VIdeo Game Ideas

More than anything Newer Super Mario Bros NEEDS to have an unlockable Special World, ala Super Mario World.  It'd be cool if the next Special World was modeled after Mario Kart's special cup and ended with a sweet rainbow-in-outer-space level.

Seriously though, other than Luigi's Mansion 2 (Luigi's Hotel?) all I want to see from Mario and co. are more platforming adventures (2D and 3D), more RPG's and more Karting.  The oddball spin-off sports and party games need to be the exception, not the rule.

My problems with Yoshi's Story:

The levels were boring and you only could go through a couple of them per play-through.  I had more fun looking at the pop-books between levels.  Also, replacing the classic Yoshi sounds with what sounded like the voices of children was mildly lame.  Having the levels made out of cardboard, denim, etc. wasn't as visually appealing as drawn by crayons, markers, etc.  The story was not as cool as YI's, and even though Baby Mario's crying sucked, the frantic race to nab him again was a vital part of YI's game mechanics.  Yoshi's Story was just a huge letdown.  Not terrible, but not nearly as good as I had expected, considering the original.

I wonder if anyone knows that Artoon is run by the man who designed Sonic the Hedgehog, Naoto Oshima. He founded his own company after he got into an agument with Yuji Naka over what direction the Sonic series should be taken in after Sonic Adventure was made.  That's why a lot of the recent Sonic games haven't been up to par. Yuji Naka has all the wrong ideas. I'd give YI2 a chance.

I didn't know this!  I suddenly have more interest in YI2 than I did before.

Even though the original Yoshi's Island is quite possibly my favorite 2D game of all time, I can't let myself get excited about this game.  Yoshi's Story already broke my heart, and I just can't go through that kind of disappointment again, even though I have faith that YI2 will be a plenty competent game.

Mario Chat / Re: A theory on SMG's story.

No need to harp on the guy, this IS a fun topic.

Are we going to start taking bets on who's going to be the villain in this?  Did the demo videos at E3 only show giant bosses, or were there goombas too?  I feel like there were goombas.

I'm not sure if I want it to just be Bowser again or not.  On the one hand, it'd be awesomely classic to face off against Bowser and the Koopas, and hey, if they use this as a chance to bring back the Koopalings, I'm all for it!  We probably won't be seeing Koopalings though, since the bosses appear to be of the giant monster variety.

I'd love to see Tatanga or the Shroobs come back (or have one make a cameo with the other as the main villain), but I feel like those are two unlikely options.  I think we have a better chance of seeing an all new villain, if it's not Bowser and co.

What do you guys think on this?

Or how about Tatanga captures Peach, hauls her into space, and the Mario Bros. rush to her rescue?  Yeah, I like that.

I just feel like the complicated stories have a place in the Mario universe, and that's in the RPG games.  Let the platformers have straightforward storylines.

Mario Chat / Re: Super Mario RPG GBA/DS Remake?
« on: August 07, 2006, 04:12:01 PM »
But remakes aren't bad, they give the opportunity to make more Mario fans...

I'd rather have Nintendo make NEW Mario games with NEW ideas than just crank out the old ones over and over again.  The original games have been available in different formats, and will all be in easy reach on the Wii.  I'm sick of ports, I want REAL new games, not repackaged old ones.

Awesome game for sure, and while I know the folks in Europe (and Austrailia, right?) missed out on SMRPG the first time around, I did not.  So me, personally?  I could care less if they rerelease it on GBA or DS.  Frankly, I'd rather have a brand new Mario adventure game (platformer or RPG) rather than yet ANOTHER Super Mario Remake.

Mario Chat / Re: Super Mario: Blue Twilight DX

Um... K.

After some research I found out that SME2 is Super Mario Epic 2, and it does indeed look rock solid.  I'm dl'ing it as I type.

I can't help but question the fact that the only two power-ups are the fire flower and Hammer Bros. suit--two power-ups that do almost the same thing.  Oh well, I'll reserve further judgement for when I actually play it.

The plot is basically just a rehash of SMB2, but it looks to play more like a hybrid of SMB2 and SMW.  Sounds fun for sure, but I definitely got a "kick" out of Blue Twilight's selection of Mario 64-esque moves, especially the wall-kick.

If anybody else wants to try out Super Mario Epic 2, you can dl it here: http://www.sitesled.com/members/jeffsilvers/sme2.html

----------------------------------------

All right, so Super Mario Epic 2 is pretty cool, and has a lot of neat ideas, but it also has some fundamental control problems that REALLY hold it back.

First off, do NOT try to play it full screen.  I did, and it gave me a very bad first impression of the game.  Playing SME2 on full screen turns jumps through the air into swimming through jell-o... NOT FUN.  So in order for this game to run at a normal speed, it has to be on a TINY screen... but not too tiny, or Mario will zip around and drop like a brick.  It's a little tough to get the right balance.

Also, SME 2 does NOT support control pads.  Yep, keyboards only for SME2.  It works for thsi game, but it definitely doesn't feel as good as a game controller.

The physics are a little wonky as well.  You don't bounce off enemies when you stomp them, you go right through them, and gravity in general (especially on full screen) isn't always on your side.  It sort of reminded me of Ithe original ce Climber, and that's not a good thing.

However, SME2 has a very complete visual and audio style.  It looks and sounds like a REAL Mario platformer.  So in a sense, it looks better than Blue Twilight, which has a much more lavish and impressive look, but it isn't as coordinated... more of a pretty mish-mash than SME2's coherent, if less wowing visual style.   However, Blue Twilight's music is much easier on the ears, and a very cool selection of classic Mario tunes to boot.

SME2 also gives you a lot to do in each level, with a hidden area or two per level, plus four special A coins, as well as red coins to track down.  Of course, Blue Twilight has a comparable amount of things to do--a star coin hidden on each level, plus tons of stuff to unlock, as well as a comparable number of secret areas within each level, especially the Ghost House.

Of course, Blue Twilight has some odd control issues as well:  you CANNOT stand on top of bullet bill launchers when they're shooting, or you'll take damage, and once in a while you'll get stuck on the sides of walls and blocks and stuff--the downside of being able to wall-kick, clearly.  Despite this, it still Mario still HANDLES more like he would in a classic SMB platformer in Blue Twilight.

Blue Twilight has some really clever boss fights, I have yet to see any for SME2.  Both have a lot of cool level designs, but SME2's levels seem to have a few more hidden tricks, which is fun for sure.

SME2 has a greater deal of interactivity within the levels, allowing you to destroy certain blocks, and the ability to hold an item (ala SMW) is cool as well... but I think the tighter control, better jump physics and more interesting theme put Blue Twilight just a notch or two above.  Two very cool games though.

Mario Chat / Re: Mario Amusement Park Rides
« on: August 02, 2006, 01:30:11 AM »
Maybe have it start with a Mario themed park, but eventually I know I'd want them to branch out into the other main franchises.  Metroid, Zelda, Pokemon and Kirby all have plenty of stuff that'd convert into awesome theme park attractions.

Obviously Peach's castle would be the centerpiece, even if it is blatantly ripping off Disney... hmm, maybe Nintendo and Disney could make it a joint project...?  That'd make for one HELL of a theme park.

Mario Chat / Super Mario: Blue Twilight DX
« on: August 02, 2006, 12:13:09 AM »
Is a cool fan-made Mario sidescroller.  It incorporates a lot of stuff from all over the Mario spectrum (wallkicks, rabbit ears, Kamek) and has a cool theme that makes it feel like "Mario does Castlevania" (or Super Ghouls'n'Ghosts), which is why it was originally known as MarioWeen.

The game controls well, is pretty fun (if a little short and imperfect) and has a really surprising number of unlockables.  I'm three levels into it, and kind of love it.

You can download it here: http://www.marioween.tk/

If everybody already knew about this, I guess just lock this, if not, enjoy!

EDIT: Hmm... apparently I can't post pics of the game.  Bummer. :(

They were all awful.  Tiny and Chunky were crappy clones of pre-existing better Kongs (Dixie and Kiddy), and Lanky was creepy.  Good riddance to bad rubbish.
