General Chat / Re: What kind of car do you drive?
« on: October 15, 2006, 10:45:46 PM »
SuperstarMasiah, you should definitely get a Volvo. They're reliable, safe, and drive nice!

If you're looking at a 90's model, get the 850 (the kind I have). Any of them made from 1995 (I think) on have side curtain air bags. Also they're front drive, the others (240, 740/760/780, 940/960) are all rear. But they're all good too.

All of these models hold up well, just make sure you keep up on the maintence to avoid costly repairs. I hear a blown timing belt on an 850 causes the engine to go bad and the repair is about $4K. I'd rather pay $300 or so for a timing belt before it goes (I might get a new one installed within the next month, my car has 62K and they recommend replacement around 70K).

Also, if you live in a warm area, watch the A/C on the 850s. The original units tend to go. Not sure if the other Volvos have this problem. Mine currently has no A/C, but I live in PA so it's no big deal unless it's July or August, in which case I just pop the windows. My car does have heated seats though.

As with any car check your tires when you buy it. Not just for wear and tear, but also for performance tires. I've heard Volvos are at their best only with performance tires. My car came with Michelin MXV4+ when it was new in 1996 and got another set of these tires about five years ago. This week it's getting its third set of MXV4+. The tires aren't cheap but do go on sale now and then. Also good is the Michelin Pilot but they cost more and the upgrade isn't too significant.

Price-wise, a 1996 850 without the turbocharger (the one I have) is worth about $5K. A 1995 would probably be less. You could look at a 1993-1994 but you wouldn't get the side curtain airbags. I know a 940/960 is usually a bit more; they were at the start as well. Your best bet for cost would be a 240 or 740/760/780--a used 240 for under $1000 isn't out of the question but I'd check a car that cheap pretty closely. They made 240s up through 1993.

A few other pointers: On most 80s-90s Volvos you can tell the engine type by the middle number. If fuel economy is important and you are torn between a 740 and a 760, the 740 has the four cylinder. However, the six is more powerful in those cars, especially the station wagons. The 900 series works the same way with the 940 and 960 (the 900 series is basically the second generation 700 series). The 240s all have four cylinders, and the 850 has an inline five.

The 780 violates that rule. It has a six cylinder and not an eight. I think they just did that to designate the two door variety.

The cars were renamed midway through 1997 (and revised slightly). If you see a Volvo S70 or V70, it's an 850 sedan or wagon, respectively (but slightly revamped). The 960 became the S90 and V90. Also the C70 (original) was based on the 850/S70 platform. These were the last cars made before Ford took over Volvo.

Another recent model you could consider is the S40/V40 (the old model of this was the 400 series over in Europe but it wasn't imported for the USA until 1999, if I recall). It's small, is really easy to parallel park, and might be able to be obtained for a good deal (I'm not too sure on the going prices of this one). I got to drive one earlier this year, a 2000 model, and  thought it handled really nicely. I loved it so much I'm thinking of buying the new generation of it when I someday get a new car (although my 850 will probably last me at least another ten years).

If you choose to go the VW Van/Bus route, be aware there are the microbus, the Vanagon, and the EuroVan. They were made in that order. My only concern would be parts and also safety. I did see an old microbus (circa 1970) with seatbelts and a car seat installed at the mall though. With the old Microbus you'd likely have to restore it or get a restored one. That would be a bit much. Vanagons and EuroVans aren't too common around here, perhaps in your area they are. My mom used to have a 1997 Plymouth Voyager, it was a nice van--although it was obvious it was American in the way it drove and rode (if you're a Euro car guy you can tell the difference although it isn't always clear on some Acuras and Lexuses--I've spent a lot of time with an older Acura Legend and it feels European to me).

Sorry for the length of this, but I love cars!

Hmm, maybe I should just use PowerPoint and put the slides on timer? There's really no good screen saver for OS 9?

Oh, and I'm not upgrading to OS X. I hate OS X. I know they won't make anything new for OS 9 ever but it's easy to use and as long as I can run AIM, the internet, and some productivity software (Word, MacDraw, etc) I'm fine with it.

You guys all seem pretty good with computers so I thought I'd throw this out.

I'm wondering if there's a good screen saver out there for Mac OS 9 that would let me sequence pictures while I'm not using the computer. Even though I have a laptop and can sleep it I have some pretty sweet pics that I'd love to flash as people went by (of my friends and I).

Anyone familiar with this type of program or know someone who would be?

Nice upgrade there...did you get the LSS model of the 88? I remember when the LSS came out, they had one at the auto show and I'm like "hey, this car is pretty sweet". And I'm normally a European car kind of guy.

Video Game Chat / Re: South Park offensive to gamers?
« on: October 15, 2006, 01:04:41 PM »
Has South Park ever made an episode that pokes fun of Barry Bonds and steroids yet? If they ever did that (or just any player in general, maybe Sosa/McGwire/Canseco) I'd have to watch it.

I do know they made an anti-Paris Hilton one a few years back. I haven't seen many of these at all but I did see the Paris Hilton one and it was sort of funny. I can't stand Paris Hilton and don't even think she's that cute, so it was right up my alley.

I do know this much about South Park: it is meant to offend people but you're supposed to take it lightly. I see it as slightly satirical. And I doubt South Park will ever run out of people to offend. News happens all the time so there will always be some group that can be parodied/made fun of on South Park.

Just imagine if South Park was around during World War II. But then again, they already have made fun of Adolf Hitler in the show.

Has anyone here heard of 3 in Three?

Didn't think so. It was made for the Apple Macintosh in the early 1990s. It's a puzzle game and is very addicting. Also has some good humor in it.

If you have an older Macintosh by all means find a copy of it! It works perfectly on my iBook with OS 9! (Not sure if it works on OS X or not)

Video Game Chat / Nintendo DS for my cousin
« on: October 14, 2006, 10:50:31 PM »
My cousin and I were talking a bit ago and she said she wants a Nintendo DS for Christmas.

Trouble is, I know next to nothing about the DS.

I need to know the following:

1. How much should I expect to pay if I'm going somewhere at 6:00 AM the day after Thanksgiving?
2. What games should I get her? (She's almost 12 and likes Mario)
3. Any accessories recommended?
4. Will I need to get batteries for this or does it have its own battery (like a laptop or cell phone)?

I think I'll be able to get to Circuit City or Target pretty early, but I might not be there at first if I go out with some friends and we want to hit the mall first...will they be in short supply in case we take a long time at the mall buying other stuff?

1996 Volvo 850!

Not only does it perform well, it's also one of the safest on the road. If I drove anything else and had friends with me I'd panic about their safety big time but with side air bags and some claiming nobody's ever died in an 850 I can rest at ease.

I also love the heated seats in the car.

Here are some reports:

1. My mother said that I called out the name of my old dog, who died seven years before I had the dream, in  a hotel room when I was 12.

2. Four of my buddies and I were in a hotel room once and two of them were still awake when I had dozed off. They said I was groaning and sighing a lot in my sleep.

3. My dog sort of barked in her sleep once. Her tail was thumping on the gronud as well. I guess this is the equivalent of talking in your sleep for a dog.

General Chat / Re: Funny/Interesting Messenger Conversations
« on: October 14, 2006, 10:36:24 PM »
I am going to pick on one of my friends here because he used to say this a lot. It deals with an old away message I had, it was Puddle of Mudd's "Blurry" lyrics (back from before I got really into Europop).

FIRST CONVERSTION.

My friend: Hey man, are you still planning on going to that ballgame tonight?
Autoresponse from me: "Blurry" lyrics
My friend: Nice song but that away message is kind of depressing there, mate!

SECOND CONVERSATION.

My friend: Sorry I had to leave math class early today, my headache was out of control. Did you get the assignment?
Autoresponse from me: "Blurry" lyrics
My friend: Dude, you should change that away message. It's been depressing for a whole week now.

THIRD CONVERSTAION.

My friend: Dude, CHANGE YOUR AWAY MESSAGE!
Autoresponse from me: "Blurry" lyrics

The third one struck me as funny. I actually saved it as a text file on my computer so I could show it to him later just to see his reaction (he groaned and said that it was from my "depressing away message" phase).

Currently my away messages either say what I'm doing, are cheering on some sports team (right now it's the Detroit Tigers), or are lyrics from "Long Way Home" by ATB. I think I still have "Blurry" saved as a preset one but I haven't used it in almost two years.

General Chat / Re: Wacko dreams
« on: October 14, 2006, 10:30:07 PM »
Okay, I saw this title "Wacko Dreams" and I sure am glad I decided to log on today because I just had one less than 12 hours ago when I took an afternoon nap and managed to get some REM sleep!

I was on some sort of trip with a bunch of my friends. Somehow my one friend and I get seperated from the rest of the group and find ourselves in this room filled with talking heads. And I mean talking heads. Big spheres with faces on them that say stuff. The building is a pyramid-type structure.

Now my friend is sort of scared. Not as much as me, but she was frightened. The heads were talking to us. Somehow we escaped but wound up in this hallway with a bunch of escalators. Think of a mall center court but without stores. Who should walk by but the band director from my high school who HATED my friend. Now she's even more panicky because she thinks he is going to get her in big trouble for nothing.

So we go down this escalator and find the rest of our friends there but half of them are unresponsive. My friend tells me that she valued all time time she spent with me because she was worried I was going to become zombie-like just as they had but somehow didn't. So we sneak off away from these people and just start having a heart to heart conversation.

At this point I woke up.

INTERPRETATIONS, ANYONE?!?
