Inspired by this. I don't really expect this to pick up much steam but hey, maybe we can get something going!

To start, I've read a bunch of times over the years that Wario was purposefully designed as an over-the-top evil caricature of Mario to represent Nintendo R&D1's frustration with having to work with an existing IP. Is there anything to substantiate that?

Wario's design arose from Super Mario Land's design team's distaste of making a game based around someone else's character. The creation of Wario allowed them a character of their own to "symbolize their situation".

...and they cite this as their source, which itself cites this as its source. They seem to be the kinds of sites that have their facts in order, but...
