Mario Chat / (Mini-spoiler) Joke in Super Marioball
« on: August 27, 2004, 05:27:46 PM »
In Super Mario Ball (japanese title) when you          hit a Monty Mole it goes down and then pops up again from another spot, but if you are lucky the mole will turn into a mooing cow!

For those who don't know, cows are common jokes among pinball designers. For more cows and hidden stuff in (real) pinball games, head to http://hem.bredband.net/b257182/Cows&Easter.htm

Mario Chat / SMB tune in Italian song?
« on: June 24, 2004, 07:07:31 PM »
Italian music of the 80s became very popular in Japan and doesn't surprise that many videogame tunes sound like the most listened kind of music in my country about 20 years ago.

Here is a sample from the song Diamond by Via Verdi. Listen carefully to the last 13 seconds

http://ninobaldan.altervista.org/80/diamond.wma

Super Mario Bros was first released in 1985 and Diamon is dated 1986.

What do you think?

Mario Chat / baby bro's funny quotes
« on: November 26, 2003, 02:59:06 PM »
Tiziano is my little brother. He's 2 years old and he likes sitting on my knees and watch me play SM64. I tried to write down some funny things he says commenting what he sees on the screen.

What he knows about Mario is that he "Jumps! Takes coins! Eats mushroom! Yohoo!"

how cute :)

He also says "Now comes green Mario!".  He doesn't believe in santa claus (he doesn't know about it yet) but still believes in Luigi being in SM64 :)

"Pink bomb-omb is good! It doesn't explode!"

Me, pointing at Toad: "who is him?"
He thinks a little then says  "a red goomba!"
Ouch.
A few days later he learnt that "Toad jumps a little!"

"Rabbit is good! Gives 2 yellow stars!"

"Piranha plant (or Chain Chomp) has big mouth! eats sandwich!"
He's a bit scared of Chain Chomps but he's happy that "Mario chases it away"

"There is no Boo-ghost?"  He says so each time I enter peach's castle.  He wants me to stomp a few ghosts before playing other courses.

And lastly, when he notices a Koopa turtle he says "Can you give me the shell?" because he likes watching Mario ride the shell.

anyone there has a little child that says funny thing about Mario games?

Mario Chat / SMB3 to SMA4 SPOILERS!!
« on: July 11, 2003, 04:00:00 PM »
played and completed.
here are a few changes that Nintendo made for the GBA port.   This list is not accurate. Just to give you an idea of what to expect!

graphic/sound changes

-New intro sequence. bowser's ship lands in Grass Land and a Koopa Kid takes over the castle.  The first time you visit a castle, an intro scene showing a Koopa Kid stealing the wand and turning the king into an animal.

-General graphics/sounds are a little upgraded. If you played hard the SNES version you will notice the changes. For example coins and cannonballs are a lil bigger because of the reduced screen size.

-Voices. Only Mario and Luigi have speech (the usual Let's Go!; Mamma Mia; Just What I needed...) except for an appearance of Peach crying MAAARIOOOOO! after you beat the first two tanks in World 8.  Almost forgetting, Boos do screech! (cool sound effect!)

-When warp-whistling, the SMB2/SMA1 "warping screen" effect is used.  Then appears a message that (I guess) says  "welcome to world 9"

-If you warp to world 8 you receive Bowser's message as u would if you beat world 7. If I recall correctly this didn't happen in the SNES version.

-Introduction to mini-games is way improved! It shows you and Toad at a table. Toad says stuff and then you enter a door where presumably the game machine is located.

-picture-completing minigame sound change: if you match the first 2 pieces of a picture, a drum roll effect will play.
Mario says "BRAVO!" if you win.

GAMEPLAY CHANGES

-the game is a LITTLE easied up, in accordance with Nintendo "No-Gameover" policy. When I completed the game 100% I had about 60 lives left and a 1.7M score.

-Beating Bowser unlocks the "world select" screen. Yes, you get to pick what world to play in! If you beat all levels (90/90)then you can freely play the levels you want.

-2 players option:  you have the option to play as "mario only" or "mario and luigi". The second choice is made to play with a fellow player, taking turns at the console. You can transfer lives between the players if you wish.

-You can pick a box in Toad's house even if Toad is still talking. Also you can interrupt Toad when entering minigames.
Just you must wait for the speech to be completed while in the king's presence(respect the boss!)

-you get to play the card-matching more than once if you get 80000 points more than once (if you get for example from 79950 to 160000 in one level you get to play the game twice)

-super picture-completing game! It appears as a hearts symbol on the map (I found it only in World 2).  It is the same of the spades-picture-completing but instead of Starman there is Raccoon Leaf as top life givers. Complete the Leaf for SEVEN lives!

-Pressing L on the map screen shows your item reserve. Pressing R a Lakitu appears and drags in a cloudy stage. Then he asks you for the e-reader. I guess it's for unlocking the famous hidden features.

-you can reach "World e+" from the select screen but it's useless if you don't have an e-reader (and the appropriate cards). The map screen contains: a space that allows you to switch between Mario and Luigi; a Lakitu spot that teleports you to the cloudy stage; some mushroom houses, all locked; and also a castle space. When you enter it you'll find it empty. on the upper-left corner the 1F message tells you that you are on first floor... looks like you can add stuff to that castle with e-cards.... maybe stairs!
Ace coins and other weird stuff are not unlockable by playing the basic game alone.

That's what I found for now.  now get out and play!

Mario Chat / Mario Party-e I got rulebook!
« on: February 20, 2003, 03:26:26 PM »
you'll find it on Nintendo's website on the Mario Party-e page.  for some reason it's in FRENCH.

it's a card game for 2-4 players but more players can join by adding one more deck.
The GBA card e-reader isn't required. You just need cards and buddies.

the goal of the game is to be the first one to have a set of 3 Item cards in play (Hat, Dress and Shoes) and then to play the Superstar card.  Other cards represent tools you can use to search the deck for the item you need or to steal cards from your opponents.  Every player starts with 5 cards in hand.  On their turn the active player must draw a card from the deck and then play or discard a card to the discard pile.

in the deck there are also 11 Challenge cards which contain one minigame each (to be played with the e-reader)

Among them I'd look out for the Bowser's Roulette card...

Mario Chat / new SMB movie ?
« on: December 24, 2002, 01:47:39 PM »
Looks like Nintendo is going to launch another Mario movie, promising not to make the same mistakes made in the 1993 movie.

It's also said that Marilyn Manson will make an appearance...

Forum Games / Mario Kart: the forum board game
« on: December 21, 2002, 07:16:48 PM »
well, putting the SMB card game away for a while, I designed (in just 2 days) a MK board game, nicely playable on a forum or in a chat, making it a fun party game.   If you ever played Formula Dè, it will feel familar.  If not, nevermind, the game is even easier.   I'll post the game rules later, I'm not good at typing after 2 AM

Mario Chat / SMS: From English to Italian
« on: October 10, 2002, 02:40:06 PM »
SMS is the first Mario game (if you don't count SMA3 as a new game) fully translated in Mario's home language.
Surprisingly enought, the Nintendo ITA Offical Magazine reports that level names were changed for this version.

   ENG  ------>  ITA
  FLUDD ------      SPLAC 3000
 E. GADD ------     Prof. STRAMBIC
("strambo" means weird and "strabico" means eye impaired)

SHINE  --------       SOLE CUSTODE (guardian sun)

 ISLE DELFINO ------  ISOLA DELFINA
(wow, it became a femal dolphin!)

BIANCO HILLS -----  COLLI ARIOSI (windy hills)
RICCO HARBOR -----  PORTO GIOCONDO(playful harbor)
GELATO BEACH ------  LIDO RAGGIANTE (shiny beach)
PINNA PARK   ------  GIRASOLANDIA (sunflowerland)
SIRENA BEACH ------  SABBIE ROSSE  (red sands)
NOKI BAY   -------    BAIA DEI NOKI  (noki bay)
PIANTA VILLAGE ------ VILLAGGIO DELLE PALME (palms village)

Also the same magazine confirms the  SMA4 = SMB3 rumor
