No, SSBM was going far more into the concept of them being trophies.
Remember that your first Goomba boldly you walk? When Mario touched that mushroom being brought up more largely remember that you are surprised? Miscalculate your jump that pit remember that it falls?

Here are most of the unlockables in the game:

Bonus Characters:
Complete any of the indicated tasks to unlock the corresponding character. 

Captain Falcon
-Complete Classic mode in less than twenty minutes then defeat Captain Falcon in the bonus match.
-Play 70 Vs. mode matches.

Falco
-Complete 100-man Brawl.
-Play 50 Vs. mode matches.

Ganondorf
-Complete Classic mode under the Hard difficulty as Link or Zelda.
-Play 200 Vs. mode matches.

Jigglypuff
-Complete Classic mode with any character except Ike.
-Complete Event Match #20.
-Play 350 Vs. mode matches.

Lucario
-Defeat Lucario in Subspace Emissary as Meta Knight.
-Complete five Target Tests.
-Play 100 Vs. mode matches.

Luigi
-Complete Classic mode under the Easy difficulty without using continues.
-Play 22 Vs. mode matches.
-Defeat Luigi in Subspace Emissary.

Marth
-Complete Classic mode.
-Play 10 Brawls.
-Defeat Marth in the Subspace Emissary.

Mr. Game & Watch
-Complete Classic mode as all characters.
-Play 250 Vs. mode matches.

Ness
-Play 5 Vs. mode matches.
-Reflect ten projectiles.
-Defeat Ness in Subspace Emissary.

R.O.B. the robot
-Play 160 Vs. mode matches.

Snake:
-Play fifteen matches on Shadow Moses Island.
-Play 130 Vs. mode matches.

Sonic:
-Complete the Subspace Emissary.
-Play 300 Vs. mode matches.

Toon Link:
-Complete Classic mode as Link.
-Play 400 Vs. mode matches.

Wolf O'Donnell:
-Complete Subspace Emissary, then finish Boss Battle mode as Fox. Defeat Wolf after he challenges you to unlock him.
-Play 450 Vs. mode matches then defeat Wolf after he challenges you.
-Complete Subspace Emissary then go to the ruins to encounter and defeat Wolf.

Jungle Japes: Play any Melee stage ten times in Vs. mode.
Luigi's Mansion: Brawl as Luigi three times.
Mushroomy Kingdom: Complete Event Match #19.
Pokemon Stadium: Play on the Pokemon Stadium 2 stage ten times in VS mode.
Spear Pillar: Complete Event Match #25.

Sure it's possible. The English version of Brawl could still include the Spanish Inquisition.

In seriousness, I haven't seen an all-English trophy list yet, and I can't find the complete list of Assist Trophies. Not to mention we don't yet have pictures of all trophies.
How long until we see a picture of the Krystal trophy?
