Latest News / New Mario, Luigi, and Donkey Kong games shown at E3
« on: June 05, 2012, 12:23:32 PM »
Several new Mario titles for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS were featured during Nintendo's press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) today.

Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime presented a video of New Super Mario Bros. U, which includes a flying squirrel power-up and baby Yoshis that balloon up. In Nintendo Land, also for Wii U, two of the sub-games announced were Donkey Kong's Crash Course and Luigi's Ghost Mansion.

New footage of New Super Mario Bros. 2 for Nintendo 3DS was shown, and an August 19 release date was announced by Scott Moffitt, NOA Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Two other previously-announced 3DS games, Paper Mario: Sticker Star and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, are planned for release during the holiday season.

On NOA's E3 website, Game & Wario (working title) was announced for Wii U, but not shown during the press conference.

A few hours ago, Nintendo broadcast a pre-E3 edition of Nintendo Direct to showcase some of the features of Wii U. While Nintendo President Satoru Iwata talked about how the new "Miiverse" will interact with games, viewers were treated to about 15 seconds of New Super Mario Bros. Mii footage, which ended with a look at a map screen that contained text messages from Miis.

Hooray for Catherine

First of all, there appears to be some sort of an achievement system planned, as evidenced by the orange text bubble that reads, "Cleared in under 100 seconds!" above Catherine's post.

Next, let's take a look at the two posts surrounding Catherine's achievement:

Michael: "A baby Yoshi that balloons up to carry you? Too cute!"
Thomas: "OK, being a flying squirrel is WAY more fun than it should be!"

The new baby Yoshi ability sounds plausible, but what is Thomas talking about? Assuming he's not confusing Tanooki Mario for a squirrel, does this mean Mario will have a flying squirrel power-up?

It's possible that the Mii messages are just shown as examples, but we may not know for sure until E3 or even later.

We've posted more screen captures below. You can watch the full Nintendo Direct video on Nintendo's YouTube channel.

IIRC, we didn't have exact registration dates for some or all of the people who signed up on the old classicgaming.com ASP Forum, so when MB set up the SMF board he set the unknown join dates to the date and time of the users' first posts.

We opened the SMF board on Nov. 15, 2005, after four days of testing and working on the design.
