General Chat / Sensory Association

The human senses are often linked to memory in interesting ways. What are some smells, sounds, songs, or sights that invariably bring a particular time, place, or thing in your life to mind?

For example, every time I hear the start-up jingle for Windows Vista, I think of Super Mario Galaxy. This is partly because we got our new home computer with Vista around the same time as SMG, and more-partly because... well, it honestly sounds like the spacey kind of jingle you'd hear in the game.

Go crazy.

Here's mine, pulled up by my brother as a test:

Obviously, you're welcome to add a picture, but I think it would be more fun to leave it to the imagination--or maybe have CE7 other people draw an interpretation.

Fan Creations / "Distortions" is Here!
« on: April 23, 2010, 11:02:07 PM »
Now remastered exclusively for Amazon Kindle!

Also available in physical form through my blog, Notes&Sketches.

For those who haven't heard, I wrote a book; as an aspiring author, more shall come, but this is my self-published debut: Distortions, a collection of Twilight Zone-esque short stories. I waited a while to announce this because I wanted to make sure close friends and family would have a chance to procure first-edition copies, but I feel confident I can step up my advertising campaign now. The going price--which covers shipping and handling--is... Alright, I've been hunting for the cheapest shipping options, and it looks like they'll be mail-selling for $11!

-----------------------------------------------------------
These were all written over the course of my time in high school, and so I'd say they're somewhat above, say, Neal Shusterman, but well below Stephen King, in terms of content/intended audience. Here's some teasers:

The Mall
“Hey, I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again,” Nick insisted, “A monster lives in the downtown mall. Case closed.”

Down for the Count
I don’t know what I did to make them mad—the numbers, I mean.

Dimension for Rent
He walked up toward the large, dirty panes, where a sign was propped up from the inside in front of the curtains. It looked like thick, white cardboard, and on it was scrawled:

DIMENSION FOR RENT

In red permanent marker and, beneath it,

INQUIRE WITHIN

Power of the Day
You see, I have just about every superpower there is. But, for one reason or another, I just can’t have them all at once.

How to Stop Time
He felt the irritation that had compounded throughout the day hit all at once. Balling his hands into fists at his sides, Shane stomped his foot, looked up at the sky, and screamed, “Why can’t I just stop time!?”
“Why not, indeed?” said a voice behind him, and Shane spun around so fast he almost twisted his ankle.

People of the Paper
Daniel extended his hand to rub away the drawing and there was the quick scratch of pencil-writing as the stick figure threw up its arms.

The Lunchtable of the Apocalypse
I shrank back as Warra banged a fist on the table. “Bomb ‘em all, I say!” she hollered explosively, “either you’re with us or you’re a stain on the ground!” Then, to drive the point home, she swiftly pulled a large knife from somewhere in her pockets and stabbed it into the table, hard enough for it to splinter the wood and stay upright. Breathing heavily, she resumed eating.

Abandoned
He looks to the massive windows that complement the double doors, hoping like a child on Christmas morning for a present, a reward for his hardiness and determination. Darkness shrouds the parking lot and a thick fog obscures all beyond it, but all he must do is look to the empty sky to know his purgatory must continue.

Game Help / Great, My Wii's Having Problems...
« on: April 18, 2010, 02:40:55 PM »
Yeah, so I was playing GH5, the thing started taking forever to load, and then I just up and got a disc read error. Now, I can't get it to read any discs. The manual said something about just unplugging it for a while--disregarding the fact that I can't see how the AV cord would have anything to do with the disc being properly read, I always unplug my Wii in the interest of minute energy conservation, so I doubt that's part of the problem. Anyone else have something like this happen that can give me some help that doesn't involve online troubleshooting, robot hotlines, and jotting down error codes?

The White Mushroom House / Stuff Burdening Me
« on: January 29, 2010, 06:31:44 PM »
Okay, as many of my relatives have owned multiple old Nintendo-related hardware and games over the years, I'm currently sitting on a pile of myriad old consoles, cartridges, etc. they let me have. Yes, I know most of this stuff isn't worth buying, but I reckon I've got nothing to lost but a little time by posting this list:

--1 NES
--7 NES controllers
--Memory Card 59
--SNES "Tribal-Tap 5"
--2 NES game cases
--2 Zappers
--Game Boy plus AV cord (bizzarely enough, I think it only works with the cord plugged in)
--2 extra AV cords (NES/SNES)
--One video cord (NES/SNES)
--3 copies of Super Mario Bros.
--Super Mario Bros 2.
--2 copies of Dragon Warrior
--The Legend of Zelda

They're not losing me any money, but then again, they're not making me any--in other words, since I'm really bad at deciding how much old stuff should cost, I'm going to be working on a heavily bargain-based "name your price" system here.

So, your iPod/iPhone, Zune, lesser name-brand MP3 player, what have you... what albums do you have on it?

Here's what I've got (Keep in mind that I've got a last-gen 4GB Nano, so this'll probably be easier for me than those of you with "larger" iPods.):

Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell, Meat Loaf
Bat Out of Hell II: The Monster is Loose, Meat Loaf
Batman (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), Prince
The Best of Both Worlds, Van Halen

"Metroid Metal", a couple of the titular songs by Stemage.
The Mustin Collection, Mustin (et al)
A New World Record, ELO
Out of the Blue, ELO
"OverClocked ReMixes", assorted songs from the titular site.

The Wall, Pink Floyd

"80s Mix", a bunch of 80s songs selected from a sizable series of class reunion CDs of my dad.

I have no idea if this counts as a game, but I figure there's no time like the present to re-post it as its own thread.

This is the place where you get things of a somewhat regrettable nature off your chest, those that are too pressing to ignore but petty enough that they don't warrant a whole thread or a police investigation.

For example, I think one of the reasons I'm physically attracted to a girl at school is because she looks kind of like Rinoa.

That is, if the collective mentality of the human race was personified as one person, what would you tell them?

A couple links concerning something you've probably heard about:

http://www.destructoid.com/why-comparing-metroid-prime-to-citizen-kane-is-ludicrous-151465.phtml

Well, it seems like we've got a couple camps here: People who think MP is the Citizen Kane of games, people who don't, people who think it's irrelevant, and people who think the comparison is just plain unneeded and innacurate. Where do you stand? And, if you do think games "need" or "have" "a Citizen Kane", what is it?

General Chat / What Are You Like in the Morning?
« on: October 04, 2009, 09:44:34 PM »
What I mean to say is, well... exactly that! Do you wake up still feeling tired? Alert? Do you yawn a lot or get eye gunk? Are you cranky and disoriented? Do you make coffee or something?

I tend to wake up with my eyes still sore from tiredness. My joints always pop and crack as I make my way downstairs, possibly underestimating the breadth of my shoulders and slamming into things. And I always have to pee, though I don't know if that's just me, or what.
