According to the Nintendo Power player's guide for Yoshi's Island, Poochy is indeed a dog.

Yes, Poochey is a dog. If you couldn't tell by all the sniffing and barking and general dogginess, well, there you have it. What I wanna know is what the hell happened to his nose?! Has anyone else noticed that poor ol' Poochey has NO NOSE? What kind of sick freak would create a dog but deprive him of a nose? And how does he sniff for items...?

Poochie I think is just a copy off of the phinx. The phinx has no nose, and niether does Poochie. Maybe that means he is powerful and has magic powers!

I fail to see how Poochie is similar to a Sphinx. There are Sphinxes in "Super Mario Land" called "Gaos." I suppose it's just keeping with the "Mysterious Spaceman" motif (along with the Moai).

this probably sounds stupid but maybe ....poochie is a dog that got his nose chopped off by bowser so he is helping yoshi
to defeat bowser...well ok i doubt that is what he is...maybe some dumb bell at nintendo drew a dog and forgot the nose..
