It could be optional, of course, for people who may not like the idea of using the Stylus to play. It could be kind of an "always on" option, and you could switch between using the Stylus or a button on the fly (much like you can in Animal Crossing: Wild World, but without having to tap the screen once to show you are using the Stylus).
Kinopio is the ultimate video game character! Who else can drive a kart, host parties, play tennis, give good advice and items, and is almost always happy??

It's still a gimmick. Heck, having it as an option makes it even more of a gimmick.

It's kind of like not allowing you to use the control pad on Starfox: Command.  I hate the controls on that game...  But you're right, it's a total gimmick.  I think you should use the stylus to control a subcon fairy to get items you can't get or something...

Or they could just not implement the stylus at all. NSMB didn't.
