The custom touches are nice.  I thought the detached vacuum pack was a Tamagotchi at first.

That's definitely it!

"My blood curdles when I think of those poor turtles" it's great to finally hear it again after only hearing it on WTMK years ago.

Thank you!

Hey guys, first I'm so glad TMK and the FF are still up. This place holds a special place in my heart, it was one of the first places I liked to hang online out when I was a crazy kid. Not many forums are still around from those days, at least none that I visited.

Anyway, I can't remember the exact date but sometime in the 2000s I was listening to WTMK very often and there was one song that I only heard once or twice that was this Country or Folk or Bluegrass kind of band playing a song about the Mario Bros. It was their own original song, it didn't reference any of the games' theme music. I only remember a bit of the lyrics:

"...he kicks the turtles, he stomps mushrooms ...I'm gonna kill Mario and his brother Luigi, I'll make those *******s pay for what they've done..."

When I first heard it I remember I emailed the band asking if they would send me the song. They encouraged me to buy the album instead. But I was a broke kid, and I couldn't convince my parents that I needed it. Now I've forgotten the band's name, the song name, and all I remember is that chunk of the lyrics and the melody. It still pops into my head every once in a while, and I try to find it but never have any luck.

Does anyone know this song?

Mario RPG looks fantastic. I always had a soft spot for it's classic art style, so I love seeing how how it is faithfully recreated in this remake.

The Fludd model I downloaded a few weeks ago also came with a Shine Sprite. In addition to Fludd, I wanted to have an item to go with Mario. A simple repaint with a goldish-yellow, black on the eyes and done.

Also, I recently picked up a 2.5" 8-bit Mario (modern colors) and customized him into Luigi (modern colors). The overalls, hat and shirt were repainted, and I used a toothpick for any touchups.

We'll need to see more before a full assessment of course, but so far Super Mario RPG seems to be getting something close to the Link's Awakening Switch remake treatment. Less so, because it was already a TV console game so there is less to extrapolate (no addition of a depth of field effect, in particular), but similar principles: keep the original gameplay, story, and mechanics, down to the original camera framing, but upgrade everything that can be within that framework. Including adding proper cutscenes (the latter element having been applied to great effect on the Bowser's Inside Story remake).

Here is what I could tell from a closer view of the announcement trailer:

  • Everything is dynamically 3D-rendered. Now that's a big subject for discussion, if not controversy, so for now I'll just mention the era of prerendered 3D sprites was quite short in the grand scheme of things.
  • Movement appears to be still based on the 8 directions allowed by the control pad: N, NW, W, SW, S, SE, E, NE. This is in contrast to the 3DS remakes, which took advantage of that console's directional stick to allow more free-form walking around. I believe this is for the best in the case of Super Mario RPG: some of the platforming require precisely hitting one of these 8 directions.
  • Perspective is not orthographic as in the original: this is clearest towards the end of the trailer, where the top of the underground pillars can be seen "moving" compared to the floor behind them.

All in all, interesting to see how, using a modern 3D engine, they can keep an experience – here, that implied by isometric "perspective" – that was dictated in the original by the technical constraints of the era.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to resume a game of Landstalker I just so happened to have started recently, and after that I have a Solstice cart I've been neglecting, which should tide me over until November. Can't be too prepared…
