This question has always bothered me. What the heck is Yoshi? I know he's always refered to as a he, but then he goes laying eggs left and right. I know this is a video game, but wouldn't that make Yoshi a she? I always just thought that the eggs in Yoshi's Island were like nothing more than ammo...But what do you think?

Yoshis are a rae of dinosaurs, so either there's both hes and shes, or they reproduce without mating, in which case they would be its.

I have another theory. Because the baby Yoshis can lay eggs right after they`re born and only after they eat an enemy, I think that all both male and female Yoshis (who have`nt mated) can produce eggs with stronger shells as an ammo. Female Yoshis (who have mated) can also lay eggs, but these eggs have thicker hides and eventually hatch into Yoshis.

My Theory is that Yoshi, THE Yoshi, is a very manly woman, and the other Yoshi's can vary in Gender.

I agree with the people who say that Yoshis can be male or female. I also say that generally, Yoshis don't "lay" weapon eggs, they just create them, or turn bad guys into them.

I'm not sure what "The Yoshi" is, but I'm guessing females are Yo(She)'s and the males are Yo(He)'s?

Yoshi is definitely a he. Only when when Yoshies mate do they produce eggs with babies inside. Other than that, I think that enemies that are turned into eggs pass thru a special tube leading from Yoshi's digestive system- or something- and into a system that forms a shell around the enemy. You know, like if whatever Yoshi ate was too big or something, that would happen. (Just a thought, though.)

YOSHI'S GENDER: Yoshi.

Think about it, they all lay eggs, they never mate, they have NO gender, they are just Yoshi, thats it. I think its sick enough that you can see the egg come out of Yoshi butts.

I like Geno101's idea (manly woman, funny). Actually there are some kind of lizard that the males can lay eggs. So maybe yoshi can do that too? Godzilla could in the movie remember? Maybe he is Godzilla's cousin. Or maybe it's just a video game that we pick appart to post stupid questions on message boards....or not ;]

Note to Mega 2: If the green and blue Yoshies are males, how come they lay eggs too? And one more thing, what did Pokemon have to do with this topic.
I agree with Doomba, Yoshi might be a man who lays eggs just like Godzilla. Or maybe Geno101's right, and he's a manly women. But what if he's a womenly man? nah, bad idea. If he was a womenly man, he'd have two trees in the front yard, wink, wink.

What we know is Yoshies are a race of dinosaurs similar to the Struthiomimus, right? I completly agree to the Male Laying eggs theory, because in Mario's world, or, more specifically, Dinosaur Land, where Yoshi's Island is located, the evolutionary ladder seems... crooked... although what makes a male is usually the ermm... lack of Uterus, as for Yoshi's testicles, Mario is a kid Icon, and so is his buddy.

According to me, Yoshis and Pokemons may be either male or female, but there are no noticeable differences among ***es (except, maybe, when breeding) so, pokemons and yoshis use to behave as they want, regardless of human conventions (so, if a male Yoshi wants to wear nice necklaces, who can stop him?)

The only exception to the rule is Nidoran, which differences are clear.

It's-a penalty kick!

And on the 12 year anniversary of this topic.  I shall add a more modern response.
According to the Japanese version of Super Smash Bros Melee., they reproduce asexually, but I doubt this is canon.  He has since been referred continuously as a "he".
Plus it would be cruel for Yoshi to continuously abort his babies by throwing them against enemies.
Also, why would Birdo be so attracted to him if he/she...whatever couldn't have sex with him?

Plus it would be cruel for Yoshi to continuously abort his babies by throwing them against enemies.
Many animals eat their own young -- particularly in egg-laying species like fish and birds, though it's also been thoroughly documented in mammals. Shark fetuses, rather than having placentas, get their nutrition from eating each other in the womb. Not a stretch to think there's a species that weaponizes its young. There probably is one, actually; just can't think of or find one right now.

(some further reading: [1], [2], [3], [4])

A big part of the weirdness comes from yoshis being at that intersection between human and animal. Sharks and pigs and other animals that eat their young are either djur or varelse on Demosthenes' Hierarchy of Foreignness; yoshis are clearly ramen.

We live in a world with only one species, homo sapiens, firmly identified as hnau. There's a case to be made for including other species -- cetaceans, primates, elephants, possibly even some crows and parrots -- but because we can't communicate with them (except for when we can), we're usually mentally able to keep them securely within the animal category. But in the Mushroom World, multiple disparate species with about equal intelligence are fully able to communicate with each other and mingle freely. In examining a truly multi-species society, we're hit with heavy culture shock as we are forced to examine which of our characteristics are inherent to higher cognition, and which are specific to our primate roots -- to recognize the difference between "human" and "person."

(check out this dude for some intriguing theorizing about multi-sapient worlds)

Going back to acting like yoshis are pretty much just human for the time being:

Also, why would Birdo be so attracted to him if he/she...whatever couldn't have sex with him?
Not all romantic relationships are sexual.

(this is using "asexual" in the human sense, referring to people who do not feel sexual desire, not the biological definition used in Melee; it is possible that yoshis are both or neither or somewhere else entirely)

It does make sense, in a way, that the two Mario characters (for the sake of argument, treating Yoshi and Birdo as characters rather than as species) that most clearly defy human heteronormativity would share a connection.

Also... between Yoshi's tongue and Birdo's... um... "mouth"... I think they could figure something out if they wanted to take their relationship to that level.

Sex doesn't exist in the Mushroom World anyway. Babies are brought by the Stork and a mere kiss on the lips is considered scandalous if the dialog in PMTTYD is anything to go by.

Asexuality and aromanticism are not necessarily mutually inclusive. It is possible for romance to be separate from sex. Yoshi and Birdo may well be in a relationship even if they don't have a method and/or desire to have sex (again, assuming that sex exists in the Mushroom World in a form somehow resembling our own -- off the top of my head, I can't think of any concrete evidence in any Mario canon pointing in that direction, and Yoshi's Island, while not necessarily disproving it, certainly doesn't help).
