Source.
So what do you guys think of this? They say it's for "security concerns." I'm pretty sure it's their security, not ours - a Linux install would be required to operate pirate or homebrew PS3 software.
Note also that anyone who chooses not to download the update is barred from
anything
that involves PSN, meaning people who use Linux on their PS3 for legit reasons are screwed.

(Also note the supposed release date and version number - it's highly possible that this is Sony's idea of a joke. Horrible time to do something like that when this should be an actual concern of theirs, though.)

The release date could be Sony's way of giving themselves an out if the outcry of removing Linux is too loud.

Nice job removing one of few reasons to actually
buy
a PS3.

I doubt this is a joke because the option was already removed from the Slims. But what is so important about having Linux installed on your PS3? Seriously, what is so good?

Homebrew and, eventually, outright piracy. Plus the ability to use the PS3 as a proper computer (albeit one running Linux) in addition to using it as a game system.
In other words, nothing you'd be interested in, LD.

My hopes of ever transferring PS1/PS2 saves back
off
the PS3 are evaporating.
That was a joke.

In the ongoing saga of the class action lawsuit filed in the wake of Sony removing the Other OS feature,
Sony has moved to dismiss the lawsuit
on the grounds that their EULAs allowed for their action.
(Also, it's pretty funny that this whole thing has come back up, since it's since turned out that Linux wasn't necessary to hack the PS3 to allow piracy after all.)

I think of Sony's removal of Linux and lack of PS2 emulation every time I hear one of their "It only does EVERYTHING" commercials. Really guys? REALLY!?

I just think it's funny how much stuff they've removed since the 60GB model. Most of the little icons telling what it's compatible with are gone on the newer models.
I'm glad I own a 60GB.
That was a joke.
