Mario Chat / Marrymore Mystery
« on: August 13, 2015, 01:20:44 PM »
SMRPG. There's a young Toad in Marrymore when you first arrive who is constantly nervous and jittering about. He has dialogue, but the game itself has text on him, too, saying, in effect, "He seems to really need to go somewhere."

Does he have any relevance to the game or side quests or whatever? Or is it just in there to be in there.

Video Game Chat / NES Infinite Vertical "Scroll"
« on: July 14, 2014, 08:05:06 PM »
Why in basically all NES games do characters or objects that go above or below the screen by half a block temporarily get separated in half and appear on the opposite side of the screen vertically?

Examples include:

- SMB where if a Mushroom falls off-screen, and you jump off-screen right above it, you obtain it, or you can stomp an enemy right as it starts going off-screen if you do the same jump above it.
- Excitebike (seen in a TAS), where if the rider goes too high (then eventually off-screen), he teleports in from the bottom of the screen.
- Cheetahmen (referencing the AVGN episode covering it), where when he does a jumping glitch and goes too far up the screen, he dies, but the death animation is split in half between the top and bottom.

It would seem to me that that is just the way the NES is since this occurs across a wide range of games. Though, it does seem to happen only in sidescrollers (or at least games that allow you TO go off-screen one way or another.

Video Game Chat / Mii Maker Audio Sync Issue
« on: June 15, 2014, 10:11:04 AM »
Got a Wii U. MK8 bundle. Mii Maker, of course, has the main melody through the TV while the gamepad plays the percussion portion.

The first few times I used it, it was just fine and thought it was nifty. Now, the gamepad bit is just out of sync running about two-tenths of a second behind the TV. It's enough to make it noticeable and sort of annoying.

Asking other Wii U owners, I've either heard it's never been in sync for them, or it's always been in sync. Happened to you?

Video Game Chat / DKC: Tropical Freeze
« on: June 21, 2013, 06:17:43 PM »
As you guys know, I love DKC Returns. It spanked the crap out of NSMB Wii in virtually every respect (unless you really wanna count 4 player multiplayer as the one "advantage" of NSMB Wii).

Now we have Tropical Freeze which will just be absolutely phenomenal. I thought Donkey Kong Country Returns could not have had more action and gorgeousness packed into it, but Retro Studios is proving me wrong with Tropical Freeze. I am already declaring the game better-looking, more action-packed, more dynamic, and more detailed than 3D World will ever be (because it is). Lemme tell you part of my reasoning: Retro Studios, I've noticed, designs their games with the moderately to moderately-advanced player already in mind. Just looking at some of the demo levels of the game, you can already tell that there are some pretty fantastic precision platforming/barrel situations (along with the freaking awesome camera angles and chases). The K-Levels in Returns were hard and manic. Like, freaking, SMB Lost Levels hard, but way more satisfying. I have no doubt that Retro will deliver those same types of levels again.

Nintendo is always harping on "PUTTING YOU IN THE ACTION. AS IF YOU ARE MARIO." I call BS all day and night. Retro Studios, I am confident, is the the master of this as far as 2D platforming is concerned. (I also know a lot of you loved the Metroid trilogy from them as well.) It feels awesome to live just 40 minutes north from where this greatness is happening and being developed.

Note to KoopaTrooper: I know you're going to post something about Nintendo being a family company, Mario being about people of all ages, how the grass blows in the wind in 3D World, or how said game will have 4 player support, but I'm preemptively declaring you wrong because you are.

Game Help / Mario Golf & TT Highlight Reel/Replay
« on: June 20, 2013, 06:16:33 PM »
How the crap do you save replays in Mario Golf and Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour? I want to assume it's automatic, but what constitutes a replay being saved? I see a bunch of my old ones from long ago, but I don't remember what to do with it. It sucks making an accidental albatross with Metal Mario with a hellacious crosswind (true story) and not being able to save it.

Mario Chat / Mario Games Offline... Again.
« on: June 16, 2013, 05:05:24 PM »
So, Nintendo has used what seems to be every excuse in the book to not include an online multiplayer mode for 2D (and more recently 3D) Mario games.

Some of you have defended their decisions to the death citing all sorts of reasons why it doesn't matter that Mario games aren't online, and even Nintendo tried stating that NSMB Wii wasn't online because the game by itself was "...pushing the Wii to its limits." Why any of you defend it confuses me.

Now that we are in the era of Wii U, they have literally no excuse to not include online play in multiplayer 2D or 3D Mario games, and you don't have any excuses either. There aren't any technical issues, the gameplay in NSMB U and 3D World has already been tailored for multiple characters on the screen, and other games that will be coming out (MK8, Smash Bros. U, etc.) will quite easily implement online even with their more impressive technical attributes.

So I must ask, why the crap not? The "it's about having friends over and bumping elbows" excuse is completely dead and makes no sense.

Not at the Dinner Table / Being Broke Vs. Being Poor (& Other Stuff)
« on: March 01, 2013, 09:24:18 PM »
Because I didn't want "The Wiimake Epidemic" thread to derail, I figured I could make a thread here as a response to WarpRattler's mild retort made about something I said and as an invitation for others' opinions. I would also like to talk about having different mindsets as far as financial and life needs. Sorry if it's tl;dr, but the response just sort of threw me off into a tangent:

...if anyone is still playing HD consoles with composite cables or an 18" curved screen CRT, come join us in the year 2013. You have basically no excuse if you're in high school. Mow a lawn, do a chore, do anything and spend the 250-300 dollars on a moderately-sized HDTV.
And Warp's response to that:
Also, "stop being poor" isn't a viable prospect for a lot of adults nowadays. What makes you think high school students with no degree, no real-world experience, and an existing eight-hour commitment five days of the week (not counting extracurricular activities, time to do homework, et cetera) will have better luck?

Without responding directly to Warprattler (that happens below), I am under the impression that the vast majority of high school students have the time and ability to earn money outside of their existing commitments whether it be from simple chores, manual labor, or a real job (whether it's a normal old job or a little side-business a student might have). Keep in mind I'm talking about a large majority of students; there are special circumstances for some, I know. Overall, an 8 hour high school day for 5 days a week is not that taxing on the mind or body even with any other school-related activities.

As an example of this: I've had a job since I was 17 years old. I would go to school then go to work in the evening working my ass off for my uncle's plumbing business when he was still alive. I would work full days on most weekends, as well. Yes, it was a challenge, but I made time for what I needed to do and actually sat down and did it. I didn't come home from work late at night and dick around for three hours on the computer just to turn around and cry the next day about not having time to take care of my responsibilities. As of late, I am a full-time student working two different part-time jobs. My day is: get up at 7AM, go to school at 9AM, get out and go to my first job by 1PM, then get out of there at 6PM to either go to my evening film class (if it's Monday), or go to my second job which is 7PM to 11PM-Midnight. Since my second job isn't eeeevery single day of the week, I use any time I'm not working at it to do my homework. If I'm busy all day, I'll do it late at night or early in the morning.

That's why I say there's really not much excuse for a typical high school kid to not be out doing something productive with their time, working, or both. I can sometimes be the laziest dude in the entire world, but I still can at least manage to do what I'm doing now. I bought my own vehicle, I'm paying to maintain that vehicle, I'm paying my bills, and I'm paying cash money for my college. I refuse to take out loans, and I can only hope I earn enough money to take care of the cost of living and go to college without borrowing money when I end up transferring. Without trying to sound like the "SIGH I DO IT ALLLLL" guy, I look at myself and realize I do do a bunch of stuff and somehow manage to take care of my life and grades, so, as a result, I have a hard time believing a 17 1/2 year old kid or whoever that says he has 0 time to work or whatever, yet seems to spend all his off time from school playing video games or fapping.

Now with my own personal job rant over and to move on to the main subject of the thread, I believe there's a difference between being broke and being poor. I tend to believe it's a mindset. Being poor is, "YEP SAME [dukar] EVERY DAY. THE OLD DAILY GRIND. JUST TRYIN TO MAKE IT OUT THERE. ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET AHEAD. JUST WORKIN MY DAY JOB WITHOUT A PLAN OR CARE IN THE WORLD." No, that's stupid. There is a way to change. It's all about whether you want to make an effort or not. I experienced that for a while. I was depressed for a long time and I thought I'd be doomed to a life of mediocrity because of how crippling the day to day bull[dukar] of my life was. I sat around waiting for the perfect thing to come by at the perfect moment and then I realized that, oh wow, no one is gonna give you [dukar] if you don't get it yourself. No one's gonna hand you a good job, a good grade, or a good girlfriend/boyfriend. You obviously have to make an attempt if you want to change. Has anyone noticed that if you don't make an attempt, jack [dukar] happens? The basic philosophy is if you want it, go get it. Go earn it. Then, after your hard work, you reap the benefits of it. It doesn't have to be physical labor. It can be anything that requires some type of effort on your part. That's what being broke is to me: "I know that I don't have a lot of money, but I am not staying this way and I REFUSE to. I know I don't want to be in this situation forever, and I know that I am going to be in a better position in the coming years."

Did I just fall into making good grades or working two jobs? Hell no, I obviously had to put in effort to achieve both of those things. I got the jobs I have now because I put effort into finding them, applying for them, then interviewing for them (and I had at least a small portfolio of previous job experience). Everyone must start somewhere, of course. I stand by the "whatever you put into it, you get out" philosophy so much because it works on every level, big or small. You can directly test it for yourself and it always seems to work. The second I started putting effort into my life, I noticed that I finally got some results, so I ran with it. Now I'm in a much better spot even though I'm making a low amount of money. If I would've stuck with my old, [dukar]ty mindset, I'd be in the exact same position years later that I *****ed and moaned about before.

Direct response to WarpRattler in the context of my post: Just by your response to my post, I am under the impression that you don't do anything after school (not counting homework or extracurricular activities) besides play shmups.

let the flame war begin

General Chat / Patrick Gets It Goin'
« on: February 14, 2013, 07:14:23 PM »
So, the series I mentioned in the new year's resolution (I think) thread has finally begun. Patrick Gets It Goin' will follow my path to becoming healthier. The first episode is pretty cool. Everything was made with After Effects and FL Studio.

Please enjoy! (I recommend watching it on Youtube itself in HD!)

Video Game Chat / The "Wiimake" Epidemic
« on: January 29, 2013, 05:49:54 PM »
The Wind Waker remake announcement got me thinking... back then I would've basically been on the bandwagon for hating seemingly constant remakes of Gamecube games or whatever coming from Nintendo, but I've never really been bothered by it (I have a life to worry about, like most of you). However, I've noticed there's a distinct difference between a good remake and a bad remake: whether it unfortunately supersedes a legitimate sequel or spiritual successor.

With the Wind Waker remake, I was pleased to hear about it. I've been wanting to buy it again, but now I have a reason to wait for it. The updated visuals look stunning, and 99% of it is because of its lighting (kind of like how Minecraft looks amazing with Sonic Ether's "Unbelievable Shaders" dynamic lighting mod). The point is it's not going to take the place of a legitimate Legend of Zelda sequel. There is a proper Wii U version being developed, of course, and having a Wind Waker remake tag along is perfectly fine with me.

An example of how this doesn't work is when Nintendo slaps something useless onto an existing Gamecube game (New Play Control: Mario Power Tennis, anyone?) and decides to let that be the star of the Wii generation. We never got a proper Mario Tennis Wii or anything, and porting MPT to the Wii with motion controls was probably one of the poorest decisions Nintendo could make. Here's to an actual Mario Tennis/Golf Wii U game!

Mario Chat / Ripping Sound Effects from Mario Party, Etc.
« on: November 21, 2012, 09:30:37 PM »
I'm not well-versed when it comes to digging into a game's internals. I know that sound rips are possible for N64 games, and that there exists a few sound ripping utilities, but I don't know the process of getting to that point. I've managed to rip the sound banks, but not the actual sound effects themselves.

As far as Mario Party, I'm looking to grab sounds from the game like the die appearing, the sound of it cycling, landing on various spaces, etc. Any advice someone can give me, or an offer?

Game Help / Wii Disc Read Error w/ Brawl
« on: November 10, 2012, 05:27:37 PM »
For the first time in its life, my Wii won't read its disc.

- Hasn't been played (for Wii games) for several months, but has always worked just fine
- Hasn't been hit, dropped, or put in any extreme environment
- It has been subject to a slightly dusty environment (the bedroom it's in), but with no real way for dust to get inside (and I always kept it clean)
- Only happens with Brawl and some other larger games, so I'm guessing only dual-layer DVD discs are being affected (Mario Sports Mix works fine, for example)
- Brawl disc is absolutely 100% immaculate. Zero scuffs, nicks, smudges, or scratches.

Video Game Chat / Capture Cards
« on: July 30, 2012, 05:09:13 PM »
Anyone have a capture card? At the moment I have a Happauge HD-PVR (which replaces the old Dazzle Pro I have or whatever it's called). (PRO-TIP: DO NOT PURCHASE A DAZZLE CAP CARD). Anyway, the HD-PVR records everything fine until I try to play a virtual console game. I dunno if it has to do with changing refresh rates or anything of that sort, but it just hangs the capture software and is impossible to record with. It accepts both component and composite inputs. It has no composite output. Switching every setting in the book from the Wii's resolution, to different settings on the capture card itself, all the way down to changing the cable setup didn't get me anywhere. I'm really in need of capturing some SMRPG. Dunno if anyone has experienced this problem with any type of capture card and/or capcard software.

CURRENTLY OWN:

Dazzle Pro DVD Whatever Recorder: $50 (waste of money, piece of crap, only SD 640x480, and it couldn't look worse, weird flickering green lines at the bottom handful of scan lines, Windows Movie Maker knockoff software that you unavoidably must install, can't use raw video to transfer to other programs [forced to render it within the program], software crashes often, A/V syncing issues within 10 minutes of straight recording, dropped frames, slow & sped up video/audio upon playback, scratchy or non-existent sound upon playback)

Happauge HD-PVR: ~$175 (excellent quality, loads of options, not resource heavy, pass-through to TV is 100% latency free whether you're recording or not, easy and intuitive setup, does exactly what it says on the tin and does it well)

Video Game Chat / New SimCity
« on: June 14, 2012, 05:36:33 PM »
I saw the trailer for this sometime back.

My history of Sim-related things is as follows: played SimTown and SimAnt in elementary school, then never played another SimCity game again (until just last year when I got SNES SimCity on VC). Played a little bit of The Sims, sorta messed around with the second one.

This SimCity though... I really feel like I could buy this one. It's looking great and I've never really given any of the SimCity games a chance.

Mario Chat / Mario Tennis Open
« on: May 26, 2012, 05:34:26 PM »
Huh, strange this hasn't been started already.

So, okay, I got the game yesterday. I'll just demonstrate a few good and bad points.

-GOOD-

-"Chance" shots feel extremely balanced. Not really all that gimmicky or cheap. Another major improvement is that these chance shots appear near the back line 95% of the time to discourage players from constantly charging the net if someone makes a bad shot. It encourages you to stay back where most actual tennis players tend to rally (at least in my experience). Only if your opponent hits an absolutely terrible shot will a circle appear closer to the net for a smash, but even then, that is very rare.

-The music is absolutely phenomenal. Series fans will be pleased. It has a great live rock sound to it.

-The control is excellent, and like the music, series fans will appreciate all the nuances of the game. All different types of shots being mapped to individual buttons takes a couple seconds to figure out (I was trying to hit A and B together to hit a smash, but it's Y now lol), but you'll be used to it at least by the end of the very first tournament.

-BAD.... VERY BAD-

-[EDIT] After playing for a while now, the online has marginally become better and better. It's largely dependent on the other person's connection now, it seems. It's actually playable now.

-The online mode is the most basic selection I've ever seen in my life. 3DS is a pick-up-and-play handheld; that's understandable, but when you limit the options down to two choices, as far as matches, it's just incomprehensible. You can choose "Quick" and "Extended" matches. Quick is just a single tiebreaker; Extended is a 2 game, 1 set match. No rules, no options, no special settings, NO COURT SELECTION, nothing. You can't team up with a friend to play doubles against random people. You can either do quick/extended with randoms only by yourself, or do the exact same thing only with friends in a private room. The only difference when playing with friends is being able to select a court.

-Side note: Expect to encounter one ragequitter for every few matches or so you play. I've run into about 30 different people who ragequit right before I get the final point. Also expect people to try and fly through the replays then suddenly try and quick-serve in order to fool you.

I mean... I know Nintendo wants to appeal to all audiences and wants it to be a simple, readily available experience, but why not have the option for more advanced players? Or if they were feeling more robust, actual lobbies. Let the more advanced players set up their lobbies and enjoy a hoard of options, and even set up their own little tournaments or whatever, and then if someone wants a quick match or isn't experienced, they can still have a "quick match" option there, too. I've never understood why it must always be one or the other (with it always being the simpler route.)

I see Mario Tennis' online community vanishing within the next three or four months, if that, and it'll be like Tetris Axis where you have to wait 45 minutes in a lobby before some random guy from Europe gets matched up with you.
