Mario Chat / Mario in the Real World (That You Have Photos of)
« on: November 12, 2011, 10:59:12 PM »
Any Mario graffiti, etc. you've seen and have photos of can go here. As an example, I remember seeing a person creating ? blocks and hanging them up around the city he lived in. If you have any photos you or a friend has taken of anything legit like that, post them here!

Okay, so, I was going to Salado (Texas) with my girlfriend some months back (July 18th, to be exact), and I was just looking around the highway and noticed something very interesting on the side of the road. After going to the town and coming back, I stopped on the side of the service/feeder/frontage road and took the following pictures. This was located between Salado and Belton (where I live) on Interstate 35 at a historical marker.

Mario Chat / Finding Obscure Sounds & Things
« on: July 28, 2011, 06:03:16 AM »
I'm not sure I've ever seen a thread with sound or voice acting requests or whatever. I suppose I could consolidate it all into one thread for any future requests (sorta like my old Mario Voice Acting Mysteries thread). Like I just mentioned, this'll be a request thread of sorts for any sounds or whatever people are trying to find that don't seem to appear in any sound rips (or TMK currently).

Anyway, let's start with one I'm looking for. I was just gonna link some Youtube videos with the timestamps or whatever, but then I decided to make my own video to show exactly what I need.

Go ahead and watch it in HD. That'd be coooool.

Game Help / Super Mario RPG - Super Jumps Tutorial
« on: May 09, 2011, 01:22:56 AM »
EDIT: I just realized this probably belongs in Game Help, but oh well, no one ever checks that branch of the forum anyway.
EDIT2: Who moved it?

I've played the game for years now and I never really went for a high number of super jumps because I never got the timing down and wasn't all that worried with it. After I screwed around for a bit, I figured it out, and got my 100 jumps.

Now I'm paying it forward with a visual + narrated tutorial made in After Effects on Youtube (since there's only like two random guides on how to do it on the internet and they're text-based).

Enjoy, hope it helps, and watch it in HD. Follow the annotations if needed.

Video Game Chat / Duke Nukem Forever (Is No Longer Vaporware!)
« on: September 03, 2010, 06:22:56 PM »
So, DNF is coming in 2011 to 360/PS3/PC. I played one of the olders ones for PC or whatever. I'm not up to snuff on my Duke Nukem stuff, but I figured you guys would enjoy this seeing as this game has been vaporware/abandonware/whatever-you-wanna-call-it-ware for like 13 years now.

Video Game Chat / First-Gen DS/NSMB Sound Glitch
« on: March 25, 2010, 05:58:22 PM »
EDIT: I know this seems like it should be in Game Help, but it's not a problem I'm wanting to have fixed or whatever. I'm just sharing it, so in order to curb any confusion, I've changed the topic title, as well.

So this little "problem" happened again and reminded me that I wanted to share it with all of you.

Sometimes, at random, when playing NSMB, the sound will get louder and start playing "double", for lack of a better term. I'm assuming that some of the sound channels are reserved for one speaker with the others going to the other speaker.

However, when this occurs, it sounds like the whole game audio is playing through both speakers (if the aforementioned is true), but the right side will have a delay, so it's like you're playing the game with a loud echo... kinda like a "wet" grand hall mix.

It's kind of a cool effect and it only happens with my NSMB cart (which explains the topic title). Have any of you experienced this with NSMB on an old DS or with any games on the old DS at all?

http://www.gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=116555 (EDIT: According to Warprattler, the girl did in fact die from her wounds.)

I figured I'd bring this topic here instead of Video Game Chat because I know that the gun control folks are gonna unnecessarily bring down the hammer excessively after they read this gem.

Okay, I shoot firearms, I don't mind the laws, and yes there should be some control, but not excessive control. However, even as a proponent of firearms/right to bear arms/etc., this is appalling and it makes like-minded proponents across the country look like idiots just because of some random parents' stupidity, carelessness, and irresponsibility.

1. This person stupidly did not have their weapon unloaded, unaccessible, and secured in this situation.
2. The mother saw the child pick up the firearm and start playing with it. She assumed the firearm was a "Wii Controller Gun" and walked away.

It's #2 that just kills me. How in the hell do you mistake a metallic, snub-nosed revolver for a white, large Wii Zapper? (As in, how could you not tell a real firearm from a white hunk of plastic that looks almost nothing like a firearm?)

In conclusion, while tragic, this is gonna unnecessarily stir the crap-pot when really, the parents are 110% at fault.

General Chat / Adobe CS4 MC: Troubleshooting
« on: January 07, 2010, 09:47:17 PM »
Okay, so I have the master collection and have a couple questions about After Effects.

Note: If you're gonna post to say "well lol ur first mistake is using adobe.... LOL sony vegas iz better" ...well don't... because: I don't care, I'd like to get this animation I'm creating done, and I can't find much help with it.

Okay, so after having my first animation corrupt and doing yet another one in Flash, I finally (after hours of frustration) got a .swf file successfully imported into After Effects.

Problem: The audio will not play when I preview my project (RAM previewing, scrubbing, anything) as if the animation has no sound. I've checked over all the settings there are (to my knowledge) and everything is good to go with audio. (The timeline, however, does not give me a check box to mute/unmute the audio for the file. Since this .swf is the first file I've ever imported to AE so far, I have no idea if that matters or not.)  The .swf file plays the audio just fine when I don't open it in After Effects. Also, if it narrows anything down, I used .asnd and .wav files in the animation.

Is there anything I can try or anything that I'm missing here?

Video Game Chat / DUEL STIX vs. PC Point & Click
« on: December 28, 2009, 06:03:57 PM »
I've seen this debate come up quite a few times over the years, and been involved in debates over it, as well. Now, I'd like to know your opinions on it.

As for myself, I am a proponent of dual sticks.

You may argue that it is unnatural, cumbersome, and slow, but I believe the opposite to be true for one main reason: I've shot real firearms before, including pistols, revolvers, shotguns, submachine guns (semi-automatic), and rifles, and a dual stick configuration captures that feeling of handling a real firearm much, much better than pointing and clicking.

With the point & click system, you can unnaturally swing a gun around as fast as you can move the mouse and focus your sights directly at your target(s) with the utmost ease. After shooting real firearms, that's just not how it works. Holding a real firearm fatigues you, of course, especially after holding it for an extended period (sometimes just going through one 15 round magazine can make you need to set the firearm down, depending on its weight and length... and if you're standing up). Applying force to the firearm to acquire multiple targets quickly is especially exhausting and it takes a bit of time to acquire them and take the shot safely and efficiently. Some PC setups make the firearm feel as if it's a plastic NERF toy... as if it weighs about a pound or so and that you can wave it around wildly.

A dual stick configuration captures the "heavy" feeling nicely and transcribes the real handling of a firearm very nicely. I like the slower, more predictable feeling of dual sticks. I can slowly adjust my aim and the screen follows where the firearm is pointing (as if you're aiming down the sights) unlike some PC (or even Wii) setups that angle the barrel of the firearm itself to where your mouse is pointing instead of both the player character and firearm as one unit.

One big thing (that is a bit unrelated to the topic at hand) is using an inverted aiming setup. Many N64 games had an inverted setup, and that's just what I was automatically used to and have used since then. People think I'm crazy for going inverted, but at the same time, I think people who use up/up & down/down aiming are crazy.

I like to use this visualization: Split a firearm in half (length-wise). The buttstock (yes, they're called buttstocks) would represent the right analog stick. Keeping that in mind, if the gun spins on the axis where it was split, pulling the right stick down (the buttstock) would make the opposite end (the barrel) point up, similar to a see-saw/teeter-totter/whatever you like to call those. I'll include an image to help you visualize it:

EDIT: So what are your opinions on the matter at hand and the inversion vs. "normal" debate?

General Chat / Flash/Other Animation Programs
« on: November 12, 2009, 01:18:51 PM »
Could anyone refer me to a simple flash-type program that is free?

All I want to be able to do is create simple animations (and possible add sound, if possible) and share them without the billions of features (and price tag) of some programs.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Update: 08/18/10

UPDATE: SPONGEBOB song has been reuploaded successfully. Doesn't cut off anymore. Recorded two new songs. I'll also be providing comparisons to the Japanese railroad crossing bell: my recording that emulates it, a reminder video of how it sounds in Mario Kart 64, and a video of its real-life counterpart (which literally sounds the same. It's cool). To keep the post size down, I'm gonna get rid of explaining that there are mistakes in the songs, etc. I'm going to link each one separately and provide a note next to them so you know what to expect.

Keep in mind, these aren't absolutely perfect. I record these songs for my entertainment and just screw around with them. All these songs were created on a digi-keyboard, a Yamaha DGX-200, with every note for every part you hear recorded from me actually playing it.

Enjoy!

-Songs/SFX-

Bottles' Voice (Banjo-Kazooie) and Mario Kart Starman Cuica I try to emulate Bottles' voice, and the cuica part for MK64's starman.
Japanese Crossing Bell (from Kalimari Desert in MK64)
--Crossing bell heard in MK64
--Real-Life Japanese crossing bell Almost identical to MK64
Mario & Luigi 3 - Normal Battle Melody only
Mario & Luigi 3 - Toad Town
Mario Kart 64 - Starman Melody only
Mario Kart Series - Mario Kart DS - Item Roulette SFX (Waluigi Pinball Version)
Mario is Missing! - Mexico
Mario is Missing! - Moscow
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door - Battle Victory! ...Except for your Partner
Mushroom Power-Up SFX 1 - Normal, 2 - Mario Party 3 Version (Mushroom Titan Minigame), 3 - Mario Paint Version (Title Screen), 4 - Normal raised one octave
Rainbow Mario Power Down SFX included!
Super Mario Brothers - All-Stars Version  - Overworld My first recording, I think. It's got some mistakes toward the end. (Listen for the Mario Party 3 homage of sorts near the end!)
SpongeBob Idiot Song This is a background song commonly heard when they're at the Krusty Krab or when some funny dialogue is being said.
Super Mario 64 - Metal Cap Listen for the SMRPG Starman bassline towards the end!
Super Mario Kart - Mario & Luigi Victory Medley I like this one.
SMK - Mario & Luigi Victory Dissection I alternate some of the channels so you can hear the parts better. Check it out.
Super Mario Kart - Mario Circuit I like this one. Mistake with the intro timing (edited it wrong) and near the end of the song in the melody.
SMK - Mario Circuit Dissection Melody muted to hear the background better, and muted further later on to hear a subtle string part.
NEW! Super Mario Kart - Vanilla Lake Dissection included after the main song via crappy editing!
Super Mario Sunshine - Delfino Airstrip (as heard at the beginning of the game) I like this one. Timing issues kiiiinda peppered throughout, but still good.
NEW! Super Mario World - Overworld
Mario & Luigi 3 / SMRPG Forest Maze "Connection" Remember how part of M&L3's melody for Toad Town sounded like the beginning of Forest Maze in SMRPG? Well, I decided to combine the two and it matches perfectly and seamlessly. Have a listen to see what I'm talking about.

General Chat / Fort Hood Shooting
« on: November 07, 2009, 10:20:00 AM »
As you've probably heard, there was a shooting at Fort Hood, the largest military base in the world (342 square miles).

Right after the event, 12 were confirmed dead, with 38 injured. As of a yesterday, one of the injured 38 has died from injuries. It was a female civilian officer on post that my friend's dad had been to many calls with and dispatched with (he was an officer on Hood and is currently a dispatcher), so he's feeling pretty bad (on top of the fact that the shooting occurred in the first place) since he knew her fairly well.

The gunman that opened fire was shot and was thought to be dead, but he survived and is now at Scott & White Hospital under heavy guard (about ten miles east of the dot labelled "My House" over in Temple. Scott & White is roughly a tick above the "M" in Temple in the first photo capture). Two other men were apprehended that were thought to be in on the shooting. Apparently, U.S. Army psychiatrist Major Nidal Malik Hasan was ****ed off that he would have to miss Christmas with his family because of him having to be deployed, so when he was in Soldier Readiness Center that gives you a medical check-up before you deploy (and after you get back) getting ready to go, he opened fire.

I live in very close proximity of it, so it was a scary sight seeing SWAT vans and guys near post setting up a perimeter with M16s ready to fire. All of post was on lockdown, with everyone, including on-post schools of course, being contained until about 8:30PM (with the shooting occurring at approximately 1:34PM). No one in, no one out.

Flags are ordered to be flown at half-staff until Wednesday.

Please pray for the friends and families of those who lost their loved ones.

Video Game Chat / Forza Motorsport 3
« on: November 02, 2009, 06:41:45 AM »
UPDATE 1: Added more at the bottom beginning with the still shot of the 944 Turbo (the deep red one). Also, the quality is better.

UPDATE 2 - 1.15.2010: Added pictures of a Porsche polizei car I just created and the AI driver trying to overtake me and failing miserably... leading him to flip.

UPDATE 3 - 1.23.2010: Added pictures of a car I made for a friend and my BNSF Railway Road-Rail Work Vehicle.

UPDATE 4 - 1.27.2010: Added new friends I have created and a much better attempt at a Texas license plate.

So Forza just came out about 4 days ago or so in the states. If anyone here has it (highly, highly doubt it), post your pictures of your cars/etc. if you can. (I think the last person here that had more knowledge of cars beyond changing a tire or knowing what a tire was in the first place joined years ago, posted 9 times, then randomly died. I think his username was "carsforcarpeople.")

Please refrain from posting "lol HOW DO U LIEK TEH CARZ? THEY R ROLLIGN PEECES OF METAL AND RUBBER THAT GITS U FROM POINT A TO POINT B LULZ"

Anyway, the Mustang pictures look crappy. I was screwing with the settings and made the exposure a tiny bit too high and it makes the car's details look horrifying and the quality looks like an early 360 game. (Better ones will come soon enough.) These pictures are taken in Forza's "Photo Mode." From there you can upload the pictures to your computer. Also, all paint, lettering, "license plate," etc. on the state trooper Mustang were made in Forza's spectacular Paint section where you can make anything you want using decals, vinyls, etc. (read: lots of people have made 8-bit recreations of Mario, etc. that you can put on your car... and some people have even themed cars for Mario 3, Galaxy, etc. and much, much, much more. It's pretty awesome what people come up with). Some of these pictures don't do the game justice. On a TV screen running it at 1080p is absolutely breathtaking, and half the time you forget that the cars aren't real.

This is my Fox body Mustang state trooper car. It's not finished. Yes, there were police Mustangs back in the late 80s/early 90s. SSP Mustangs as they're called (Special Service Package). This version is based off the Texas DPS livery. (Also, that picture's all screwed up for some reason.)

Rear shot

License Plate Close-Up (Need to add the holes where the screws would go; otherwise, that is what the Texas plate for a police car would look like. I might have to touch up the little Texas inbetween the lettering, however. That was a bit difficult to make haha.) By the way, a little background: the "T83" is the beginning of my friend's license plate on his car and the "KRJ" is the beginning of the license plate for my BMW I used to own.

I hit that part of the road going way, waaaay too fast. Probably around 120MPH. It was cool to air out over the 911 there, though. After landing that I promptly crashed into a wall and rolled it a few times.

This one was the first time I flew off that part of the track (before the above picture). Tiny bit more artistic.

Porsche 944 Turbo (Porsche 951). I've driven one!!!

Rear View

Front View

Turning in deep.

Flying away. Forza can render tire deformation, so if you look at the right rear tire, you can see it morphing (since I was turning hard).

Vice City Drifting.

Hot Brakes! Note: The tire looks like it has a flat spot because I was landing after I caught some air and I had my tire pressure set relatively low for the track I was at... so don't mistake that for clipping through the road surface!

Tire Deformation Close-Up. I was turning hard left if you couldn't tell.

BMW M3 (E36) Also, that's the body style that my real life BMW was (wish I still owned it).

M3 Rear

Lamborghini Diablo SV. (The roofline is about as high as your hips would be assuming you're around 6 feet tall. Trust me, I've stood next to/sat in one haha. They are low.)

Diablo Rear

Shelby GT500 (obviously based off the 2005-2008 body style Mustang). I've driven one, too! Very, very awesome.

GT500 Rear

Porsche 993 GT2 Polizei Car Front (By the way, they did use those cars in that exact livery as mid-90s Autobahn patrol cars.)

993 GT2 3/4 Photo

993 GT2 License Plate Close-Up. Painstaking detail went into making this perfect from the ring of stars above the small "D" to the custom-made number threes.

AI Driver Fail. This aggressive AI was trying to overtake me in the chicane and failed miserably by slamming into the tirewall (just off-screen to the right) resulting in him starting to flip over. That BMW at the right is me.

This took two hours to create (the figure, at least).

BNSF Road-Rail Vehicle aka. a "Hy-Rail" (Highway-Rail) or "Hy-Railer" Didn't take too long to create. I like how this one came out quite a bit. I crappily paint.net'd it to demonstrate what a Hy-Rail actually does and what its natural habitat would usually be.

The livery on the tonneau cover.

This is another friend, Zoe, I created.

This is my friend Jessica I created in a 1950s-style comic book fashion... kinda.

The full image.

For her car, I also created Texas' 2009 & up license plate. It was pretty difficult.

And the rear.

General Chat / TMK Board Reform/"Down the Crapper" Prevention
« on: September 28, 2009, 05:21:29 AM »
Yes, this should probably be in Site Discussion; however, hardly anyone checks that leg of the forum, so this topic would probably sink to the bottom of the list quickly if it were there. I was going to reply to the "Going Away, Signed TMK Member" topic of how the board is increasingly going down into the pit of despair, but I want to keep that topic on track and feel that this issue needs its own thread. Also, I want to tie any discussions about how annoying the forum can be into this sole thread so complaints/suggestions can actually be heard and not be flooded out or continue to aid any topics' deaths.

This thread is for discussing any changes for the better that this forum needs... be it preventing topics from being horribly derailed, spammed to death with unnecessary Google image search pictures, and/or turning into a let's-try-and-one-up-each-other-or-talk-crap-for-a-couple-pages fest.

You could argue that the forum isn't in that bad of shape; however, this is a prevention thread... as in, the forum is starting to show possible signs of decay and we need to be aware of all this and address it before it really takes off and, like the title states, goes down the crapper.

Moving on with one of the issues brought up at the "Going Away" topic (and what my original post in "Going Away" was going to be):

conversations turning into a memefest, ["who's funnier" fest], or an unsupported-ragefest

Yeah, I agree 110% that that is what this forum has stooped down to.

You know, it's okay if people post 50 pictures of dumb, Google image search crap as long as it stays in the appropriate thread(s). Topics are turning into pictures upon pictures of crap related to just one person's unintentionally "funny" post or what-have-you and completely dismantling the original purpose of the thread.

It's particularly annoying to start a legitimate thread and have it trashed with overly-large pictures that have nothing to do with the topic at hand. Also, an alarming number of threads are being derailed within the second or third page of posting which is annoying when legit posts or legit replies to other posts are flooded out by pictures or members just posting just to say something they think is absolutely hilarious.

I could go on a bit, but I don't need this first post to get any longer.... so discuss.

Mario Chat / New Super Mario Brothers Wii
« on: September 04, 2009, 04:23:14 PM »
All right, another thread to kinda join any NSMB Wii talk into one thread. Discuss, speculate, etc.

Okay, so we already know that the Toads as P3 and P4 is lame, blah blah blah. We already heard that bit.

I'd like to address the new power-ups suits; I kind of don't like them.

For Ice Mario, couldn't they have just done a white shirt/hat combo with an ice blue set of overalls instead of a penguin suit?
Also, for.... eh... "Propeller" Mario, couldn't they have maybe just thrown wings on Mario's hat and let the players figure out what it does instead of a suit that makes him look like the Great Gazoo?

Seriously, look at both suits. Why does he have huge helmets for each one like he's about to pilot an F16 or something?

Mario Chat / Super Mario Galaxy 2
« on: August 31, 2009, 12:46:39 PM »
I don't believe this thread has been created yet. If it hasn't, I dunno why it hasn't been already.

Anyway, I wanted to direct all of the Galaxy 2 thoughts/speculation into one wrapped up thread since it's been spreading to several threads.

First, I'd like to point out some the old-school bits (namely enemies) I've noticed in the trailer (besides Yoshi, duh):

-At 0:08, in the background you notice a rotating block resembling a ! or ? block at a 45º angle. It has some red thing that resembles Bowser's face or something on it, then you notice a 1-Up Mushroom, and on the last side you see that it's a coin. Could that be replacing the Luma you have to feed 30 star bits to to get a 1-Up/Life Shroom or just a generic, random-item-spawning ? block?

-At 0:20, you notice that a familiar enemy has come back: Paragoombas. How freakin' awesome is that? There's more at 1:08.

-At 0:35, apparently that's Megaleg's little brother or something. That's cool.

-0:40 features the return of sliding courses as a possible shoutout to SM64's.

-0:46 reveals another familar enemy: Grinders from Super Mario World. That's very nice to see.

-Right at 0:59 (if you're quick) and 1:00, right before Mario freezes the water, you can see enemies that bear a striking resemblance to Skeeters that float on the water from SM64, flat-padded feet and all.

-1:26 shows the red & blue flippy platforms from.... wait, weren't those in Sunshine in one of the "The Secret of ....." levels? Also, you see huge ? blocks that have already been hit.

-1:34, it's impossible not to notice the SMB theme going on there.

-1:37, pause it right as Mario hits the third flower. In the top left of the screen, you see a ? block with wings reminiscent of Super Mario World's flying block.

-1:39, seems like Koopas might be common enemies instead of only being in a few levels. Also, that one's red! I wonder if they made them walk on all fours to make it easier to jump on them, or if they're trying to reference Mario Bros.'s shellcreepers or SMB/SMB3. The all-four walk is apparently being retained in SMG2.

-Lastly, who couldn't help but notice at 1:43 that you're Mario running on a planetoid of your own head?

So, yes, holy crap, I'm loving the old enemies/etc. that I've seen so far. We have Paragoombas from SMB3, Grinders and winged ? blocks from SMW, red/blue flipping platforms from Sunshine, sliding levels from SM64 and more of the SMB theme going on in the galaxies that resemble "The Secret of ...." levels in Sunshine. Friggin' awesome.

Discuss.
