General Chat / Hittin' the Links
« on: August 18, 2009, 11:09:25 PM »
This thread is about golf. Discuss golf here, and/or if you play, how you play, whatever. EDIT: Eh, I don't mind, but.... I guess... keep it more on the subject of the game itself...not the last time you went to Putt-Putt and got a hole-in-one past the elephant, windmill, and waterfall. I don't want the thread to turn into "Hittin' Putt-Putt Golf & Games."

I started when I was around 12 years old. I wasn't the longest of hitters, but I was consistent, which is a quality I've lost since I haven't played a course since that age (I'm 19 now).

I've recently taken it up again, bought some Knight clubs from a quality pawn shop just so I could get back into it. I've been going to the driving range to gain my consistency back, and for the most part, I have.

My swing type is what people would label as "old school," that being turning the hips a lot with my shoulders being turned 90ยบ (back facing target at the apex). I can't stand the current swing type that the media tries to push on you because "everyone on tour is doing it!!!! So should you," which is basically zero hip turn and a "torsion" swing, you could say (twisting the shoulders a lot almost unnaturally to make resistance with your lower body, then releasing it...basically like the same mechanics as a trebuchet). I hold the club with an interlocking grip: interlocking the right pinky with your left index finger. It feels natural and feels like one nice, tight unit of both my hands. I hate the 10 finger baseball grip, and the overlapping grip isn't for me. I'm also a right-handed player.

My clubs consist of: Driver, 3 & 5 fairway woods, 3 iron hybrid "rescue" club (same loft as the same iron, but shaped like a wood), 4 thru 9 iron, pitching wedge, sand wedge, and of course, a putter.

Within the second day of going to the range, I'd gotten my consistency back. With a driver, I can drive the ball 300-325 yards (driving range's last sign is 300 yards, then about 25-30 yards past that is treeline), but I consistently hit 295-305 yards with a slight draw when I want to keep in tempo and not kill the ball. Long iron game is the weakest link so far, but I'm getting better. Short irons are just fine, high trajectory, the draw straightens out the shorter the club is. Chipping is very nice (range has "greens" with flagsticks peppered throughout it), and I can apply plenty of backspin so I tend to try and overshoot the flagstick a bit and let it bite & roll back. Putting is very nice. I can typically hole putts within 20 feet, but past that it gets bad (the range has two greens with multiple holes in them... they're very slow greens [and out of shape, too...dead grass, mowed unevenly]).

Catastrophic: So, I let my friend try and get into golf and use my clubs- big mistake. He played ice hockey in school when he lived in Iowa when he was younger, and that's how he swings the clubs... always trying to slapshot the [darn] thing and his hands are placed almost in the same fashion as a Happy Gilmore putt, if you've ever seen the movie. He doesn't keep his left arm straight and at the top of the swing, he turns it into a baseball swing. Doing that crap, he has put a crack in the top of my driver right above the clubface and didn't tell me about it. Now, I have tons of scratches on top of it and the crack has totally changed the sound of the driver upon impact; it sounds like a friggin' tin can and I can't drive the ball into the air now. It will always mow grass for about 80 yards or it'll take a super low trajectory... maybe 25 feet in the air and land at around 230-250 with a huge hook (I was slicing a bit my first couple days, so hooking out of nowhere was very strange). To see if I was just sucking, I hit my other clubs and I did just fine with them, so I know it's the driver. To remedy this, I'm gonna buy an '09 Taylormade Burner in the near future.... lighter, stiffer shaft, more streamlined head, and no draw bias (who needs draw bias... come on, just stop slicing), and slowly outfit my whole golfbag to Taylormade clubs.

Hopefully, once I get my consistency on lock-down, I'll be able to visit some courses and see how I do. I predict, with a 7 year break in my game, that I'll shoot....hmm, maybe high 80s (par being 72).

EDIT: Oh yeah, this is a video link to the "Hammer X," the most gimmicky driver (and one that would be illegal for use in virtually all golf tournaments, etc.) ever created claiming a 50 yard increase in your drive and automatic slice/hook elimination, no matter what. The creator of it, Jack Hamm, screams something every time he hits the ball, be it "POOWWW!!!!", "WAAAM!!!", "BOOOM BABY!!!", or "RAAAAAAARGH!!" He is credited as the longest driver in the word (473 yards) and fastest swinger (162MPH clubhead speed), but that is incorrect because Jason Zuback held (still holds) the record at 557 yards (and a 204MPH clubhead speed) before Jack Hamm was even heard of anyway. Anyway, from the beginning to 0:46 is the most hilarious part with him screaming, and the rest is the stupid announcer sounding like he's talking about the newest, coolest board game for kids which is also hilarious. I believe 0:43-0:46 is the funniest yell of the video (also featuring a Mario Golf-esque trail behind the ball to show how 'badass' he is and how far his ball is really going).

Mario Chat / Mario Universe Voice Acting Mysteries, Etc.
« on: July 31, 2009, 05:40:04 AM »
I considered posting this in the 7 year old thread, "Luigi's voice," but.... I'm sure you'll see why I wouldn't want this little "discovery" to be plastered at the bottom of a forgotten topic. (I'm not sure if someone has already debunked it, but as far as I can remember, no one could figure out what I'm about to explain.)

Please provide examples of voice-acting snippets that you may not understand and want answered, answer others' question, etc... ya know, do what a forum usually does.

Anyway, I just popped in Mario Party 2. I am always Luigi, then I set Mario, Wario, and Peach as COMs. Well, when Wario screwed up in a mini-game he said what everyone thinks is "D'oh, I missed." Well, being in German for three years, I instantly understood what he said after all these years I haven't played it and almost forgotten about it. It's not "D'oh, I missed it," or "D'oh, I missed," like everyone used to argue. Rather, it's, "So ein Mist," which is a German phrase usually said when you find out something has gone to the way-side.

"So ein Mist!" directly translates to "So a manure," which to a native German would be understood as "So a manure[bag]," which would finally, to our English-speaking ears, basically be the same thing as saying, "Ah crap." The phrase has the same impact as saying "Ah crap" in English, which I don't think would've been wanted to be said in a Mario game.

Now, I'm not saying OMFG CONSPIRACY NINTENDO SECRETLY TRYING TO SNEAK THE WORD "CRAP" IN OTHER LANGUAGES INTO THEIR GAMES IS MARIO AGE APPROPRIATE???, but I thought that it was very interesting.

Also, another question that I've never seemed to get an answer for: What exactly is Mario saying when he throws Bowser in Mario 64 at medium power? I've always understood it as... kinda, "So long, (KAY-pal-juhn)," but I know it's something like, "So long, [???] Bowser." Some have argued that it's an Italian word similar to "paesano" from the SMB Super Show and, of course, people always have to say "LOLL DUR HE SAIS, SO LONG GAY BOWSER," but really, I'm interested in it and want to know what he says.

Is it "So long, King Bowser"?

Discuss Tetris Party here.... obviously. Extremely fun, of course, and there are the good bits and pieces featured in the game that you should already know about, so I won't ramble.

(Need friend code thread on this, btw. Thanks mods.)

General Chat / Stupid Linksys router need helpage.
« on: August 21, 2008, 09:43:41 PM »
Okay, I've scanned and scanned and scanned the internet looking for a way to fix my stupid router and whatnot and can't find the correct article and Linksys' technical support "solutions" never work.

I have a Linksys WRT54G model, version 8.00.2. On the computer in my room (running Vista) I have the Wireless G USB adapter (802.11g). My security settings are disabled because that is the only way the comp will allow a connection. It would work fine except for the occasional "gotta go unplug & plug the router back in" deal. Yesterday it totally freaked out. The USB adapter would pick up the router just fine, but I'd get the dreaded "limited connecitivity" message. I tinkered with the stuff and now it has recognized both ends and says I'm connected. The only thing is that I can't access the internet. When I run the diagnostics on it, the only options are to move the source closer because of interference but there is absolutely nothing interfering with it, especially since it's worked fine since January. The other suggestion is to redo the IP settings but when it tried to repair it, I get the same options. I ran command prompt and now it says things such as "Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection ---- Media Disconnected" and "Tunnel Adapter ------ Media Disconnected."

The Wii has never had a problem in the world, but it's not as practical internet-wise when I have a desktop computer able to run everything normally 6 feet away from it. I need this computer working very soon.

Any help at all would be immensely appreciated. If you need any information I'll try and get it for you. Please

Forum Games / Spell Check Game
« on: July 24, 2008, 10:09:03 AM »
Okay, the spell check gives you some pretty idiotic suggestions for words we commonly use on the forums..... so write sentences, correct all the words with what the spell checker wants and see if we can decipher what we you're trying to say.

If you answer, try and just answer with the words you think the spell checker changed, instead of quoting a whole paragraph of stuff to keep it from clogging up.

Okay, let's begin with something relatively simple:

---Hey TMK people, how is it in Isle Delving and Gelatin Beach today? Geezer, is your refrigerator still going WHIIRRRRRRR? The WWII is pretty fun and the Emote is kinda HI-TECHNICAAAAAAAAL. I bet a dead Goober or Coop would love to be alive or in the Overthere instead of being in the Underwhere.---

Wow it didn't correct HI-TECHNNICALLL, WHIRRRR, overthere, or underwhere.

General Chat / Where do you work/go to college/want to do/etc.
« on: July 17, 2008, 09:59:29 PM »
What do y'all wanna do in life and what are y'all doing now?

1. Where do you work or want to work?
2. What are your after college plans/after high school plans?
3. Where do you want to go to college and for what?
4. What are you majoring or minoring in, etc. if you're there now?
5. What kind of vehicle do you drive, if any?
6. Is there a car you've always longed for?

Mine:

1. Either going to be working at the new Dead Fish Grill with my girlfriend by the lake and dam, or at Garlyn-Shelton Imports (BMW/Mazda) being a porter... detailing cars, courtesy car, filling them up, etc.
2.Go work and hopefully figure out what I want to do with my life.
3. I was going to go to Texas State Technical College in Waco for their BMW course they advertised, but as soon as I told the recruiter that he said "I've been here 6 years and never heard of that!!!!" I told him, "Well, you advertised it in an up-to-date brochure," and he said "Well, I can get you in with Toyota!! Wouldn't you rather do that??!?!" Uh, no, he was just trying to get me in that stupid program because they offer it... and I didn't want to be a mechanic getting paid to do crappy warranty work and get paid flat-rate. Right now, I have no idea what I'm interested in because what I AM interested in is not exactly where the money is. I love how things work, why things are the way they are, particularly interested in the weird world of quantum mechanics, understanding all of the I love detailing cars down to the most anal detail, I'd love to road-race at clubs or something because I've always loved that, working with new cars and critiquing them and cars of the past, reading about the etymology of words or gestures humans have created, reading about what the future holds for us (Ultra-High Definition Television, folks lol), and meteorology and all the phenomena associated it from optical to physical a whole lot, and understanding everything. I just don't exactly know where I could go for that to be a love, but make good money doing it, you know?
4.Doesn't apply to me, yet.
5.First vehicle was an '01 Dodge Ram 1500. 2 wheel drive, 5-speed manual, 273ci (I believe)(3.9L V6), never missed a lick. Traded that truck for a '94 BMW 318is. 5-speed manual, stupid little 112ci 4 cylinder (1.8L, but still got out of its own way with peppy, low gears). Bimmer crapped out and I started a project my 27 year old brother abandoned me on once I ran out of money... real mature, Robert. I had no money left for it and it was still gonna be screwed up anyway, so I sold it about a month ago after Morgan's Point Resort sent me a letter saying if I didn't cover it or get rid of it in 10 days they'd fine me $500 the first day, and $275 every day after that.. (although it was concealed in the backyard by a fence on a concrete pad we built earlier for our Morgan building we never moved. It never was trashy; I always kept it clean as if I still drove it. The neighbor behind me, Herbert, is the city council dude, so he probably complained about it. I sold the car within 6 days after craigslist.com but I still got a letter saying I owed city hall $775. That was obviously bullcrap since I had proof of selling it before that deadline, and fought it and they backed down never apologizing or anything, of course, for the bogus claim. So now, since my parents have been trippy about cars since my older brother and sister and have wrecked their cars (well, my bro stole my dad's ford ranger when he was 12, he was dumb but mature now... and I've never had a wreck and gotten only two tickets for dumb stuff) so my parents were like UR GONNA TEAR THIS NEXT ONE UP SO NO. So now, I drive a piece of crap '86 Jeep Cherokee, 2.8L carbureted V6, crappy 3-speed automatic slushbox, 287000+ miles on it... but I gotta say the transfer case for the 4-wheel drive works beautifully and it fires up every morning and goes like hell, so I don't mind it.
6.In the short term, I want an E36 (1994-1999 body style) BMW ///M3. Beautiful car, quick, very good on gas as every BMW typically is, awesome handling characteristics and an awesome stance and body look. Long term, I'd like a Porsche 993 (well, sold as the 911 but 993 refers to the chassis and body it rolled on from 1995-1998), and I'd like either a naturally-aspirated or turbo/twin turbocharged variant. Porsche's famous Guards Red with beige interior or Midnight Blue Metallic on Grey/Slate interior would suit my just fine!

Sorry for being so long, but now it's your turn and there shouldn't be any mistakes in there! I really don't want to check.

Mario Chat / Mario Music!
« on: October 01, 2007, 06:09:25 PM »
So um... I was wondering... because i have a little keyboard piano thingy from 1975 that I love playing Mario on from Mario is Missing all the way to Galaxy... what are the notes for the mushroom power up SFX? Hearing it normal speed you're like.... uh... then slowing it down on Mixcraft you're like UUHHH CRAP and I can't tell what's going on... but hearing every individual note slowed down just goes to show how creative Nintendo was in even making that iconic sound... cuz it's cool! Oh yeah, btw, embarrassingly.. I dunno the 1-Up tune. help me out.

Game Help / Sigh....Ultra Boots..
« on: June 24, 2007, 01:34:04 PM »
So yeah, I dusted off Paper Mario and I'm just about to start flower fields.... I feel like an idiot for not remembering, but where in God's name are the stupid ultra boots?!

I always remembered getting them with the ultra hammer (which I have) at LavaLava Island.... Where in the aitch-e-double-hockey-stick are they?!

Mario Chat / Super Mario Strikers
« on: November 04, 2005, 11:21:13 PM »
This is appears to be a good game in the making, but a couple things I question (it doesn't bother me though):

-Why does Mario and like... the whole crew have mean "AAH IM GONNA KILL YOU" faces constantly? It's cool, but it is because Next Level Games wanted it that way, or are they just trying to make Mario more teen-oriented?

-Peach... they made her look.... too.. real...... oh... but I'm not saying anything at all. I have a girlfriend and am happy with her so eh, say what you want, but in the words of David Dayton, "if they made a life-size Peach doll, [there would be a shortage of people] sending in mail."

Mario Chat / General Animation
« on: September 02, 2005, 04:26:28 PM »
-I believe this was brought up before, but why are Mario characters' movement so prominent (i.e. Mario & Luigi flexing their legs at ease or Peach's arms moving up and down)? I enjoy it, but why so prominent?

-When determining how nice characters look, is it a memory space situation or what? Mario Baseball, Tennis, and well, basically the sports titles (and SSBM) have crystal clear images of them with no extreme jagged edges that are very visible... is this because the game just doesn't take up that much room or is it a cleary different principle?

-What's Mario's average polygon count in the sports titles compared to SMS, etc.?

Well, this morning, one of my sister's best friends died.

Apparently, there was a party and some guy tried to commit suicide by running out on the highway. Clark was killed while the guy wanting to kill himself in the first place broke an arm and back. How the hero turns out to be a victim instead....eh..

« on: June 24, 2005, 05:42:04 PM »
Well, after another pointless two months of being without internet I finally got it back today.

My last thread isn't way down there...

white_arrow seems pretty cool judging from one post or so.

BMX has been great... Texas has been very, very hot, and my typing speed has almost been killed since I'm used to sending text messages.

I really hope that a n00b doesn't rag on me about this thread or something... it tends to happen.

Well.... eh, um hi.

General Chat / Ok, Well, This is Very Stupid and Sucks...
« on: March 12, 2005, 11:39:34 PM »
My computer got a virus.

We had to delete everything.

We had to run an old Windows XP CD to get the base of it back and we are missing settings that came with XP off the showroom floor from the store.

Everything. is. gone.

All the time I spent; all the things I did with it. Gone.

I don't know if it has remembered my usernames to anything.

Winamp and its mods are gone. IRC is gone. Media Player is gone. My music is gone. My videos are gone. My everything is gone.

Our computer is back to everything stock.

This sucks so bad especially on dial-up, but I don't care. I'm just gonna get on to use AIM, MSN messenger, Yahoo messenger, etc. and that's it. I've done so much to this computer to where it was the best thing to do when bored now it's stupid...

...and my finger is like coming off prematurely when it's supposed to come off in like.. three months.

Uuuuuuuuuuuugggghhhhh.................
