Mario Chat / Mario Tennis Open
« on: May 26, 2012, 05:34:26 PM »
Huh, strange this hasn't been started already.

So, okay, I got the game yesterday. I'll just demonstrate a few good and bad points.

-GOOD-

-"Chance" shots feel extremely balanced. Not really all that gimmicky or cheap. Another major improvement is that these chance shots appear near the back line 95% of the time to discourage players from constantly charging the net if someone makes a bad shot. It encourages you to stay back where most actual tennis players tend to rally (at least in my experience). Only if your opponent hits an absolutely terrible shot will a circle appear closer to the net for a smash, but even then, that is very rare.

-The music is absolutely phenomenal. Series fans will be pleased. It has a great live rock sound to it.

-The control is excellent, and like the music, series fans will appreciate all the nuances of the game. All different types of shots being mapped to individual buttons takes a couple seconds to figure out (I was trying to hit A and B together to hit a smash, but it's Y now lol), but you'll be used to it at least by the end of the very first tournament.

-BAD.... VERY BAD-

-[EDIT] After playing for a while now, the online has marginally become better and better. It's largely dependent on the other person's connection now, it seems. It's actually playable now.

-The online mode is the most basic selection I've ever seen in my life. 3DS is a pick-up-and-play handheld; that's understandable, but when you limit the options down to two choices, as far as matches, it's just incomprehensible. You can choose "Quick" and "Extended" matches. Quick is just a single tiebreaker; Extended is a 2 game, 1 set match. No rules, no options, no special settings, NO COURT SELECTION, nothing. You can't team up with a friend to play doubles against random people. You can either do quick/extended with randoms only by yourself, or do the exact same thing only with friends in a private room. The only difference when playing with friends is being able to select a court.

-Side note: Expect to encounter one ragequitter for every few matches or so you play. I've run into about 30 different people who ragequit right before I get the final point. Also expect people to try and fly through the replays then suddenly try and quick-serve in order to fool you.

I mean... I know Nintendo wants to appeal to all audiences and wants it to be a simple, readily available experience, but why not have the option for more advanced players? Or if they were feeling more robust, actual lobbies. Let the more advanced players set up their lobbies and enjoy a hoard of options, and even set up their own little tournaments or whatever, and then if someone wants a quick match or isn't experienced, they can still have a "quick match" option there, too. I've never understood why it must always be one or the other (with it always being the simpler route.)

I see Mario Tennis' online community vanishing within the next three or four months, if that, and it'll be like Tetris Axis where you have to wait 45 minutes in a lobby before some random guy from Europe gets matched up with you.

That's where my problem lies. Typically if I screw one up I'll instantly restart. If I'm really flying, I can fill the matrix up to the point of almost maxing out in around 15 seconds, then I just combo the crap out of it and just do whatever. I always reserve the first line and keep it around until it's needed.

Like I said, video and photos of that will come soon. Just, at the moment I'm busy taking care of stuff I need to do.

I checked it out. Currently, I'm working on trying to get maybe 6th or 7th place in Sprint mode because I just need to shave a second off to be in that position. 46 seconds for 40 lines... you can't understand how fast it is unless you see it. It's just stupid fast. I plan on doing another video soon.

Apparently I'm the 10th fastest Tetris Axis player in the world, and the fastest in North America for 40 line Sprint mode.

Then for COM Knockout mode (kill COM players 1 thru 10 back to back), I'm 16th fastest in the world, and the fastest in North America.

Will have photos of both these things ASAP.

I honestly enjoy them bringing back lots of past elements.

On top of that, when they do a mix of nostalgic/familiar elements and brand new elements, it makes it fantastic. The SMG series is a prime example of that.

Hey everyone. I've... sort of returned. Been pretty busy. College, also started working at a TV network, also girlfriend.

Hell, last time I was here was right when the forum change happened, and that was eons ago, and even before that, it'd been forever.

If they ditch the NSMB physics, then I'll be much happier. It's mainly the slippery slide animation that gets me. They oughta bring back the old school "Mario puts his arms out while sliding on one foot" animation like SMB 1, 3, and World. (Forgot if 2 does it.)

In the two hours I've played (and from the few posts I've skimmed over in this topic):

-3D isn't even slightly necessary in order to play the game and find everything.
-It's a rather simple game.

Mario Chat / Mario in the Real World (That You Have Photos of)

Any Mario graffiti, etc. you've seen and have photos of can go here. As an example, I remember seeing a person creating ? blocks and hanging them up around the city he lived in. If you have any photos you or a friend has taken of anything legit like that, post them here!

Okay, so, I was going to Salado (Texas) with my girlfriend some months back (July 18th, to be exact), and I was just looking around the highway and noticed something very interesting on the side of the road. After going to the town and coming back, I stopped on the side of the service/feeder/frontage road and took the following pictures. This was located between Salado and Belton (where I live) on Interstate 35 at a historical marker.

That sucks. I should've saved the clip as soon as I went to it, but I was busy.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a thread with sound or voice acting requests or whatever. I suppose I could consolidate it all into one thread for any future requests (sorta like my old Mario Voice Acting Mysteries thread). Like I just mentioned, this'll be a request thread of sorts for any sounds or whatever people are trying to find that don't seem to appear in any sound rips (or TMK currently).

Anyway, let's start with one I'm looking for. I was just gonna link some Youtube videos with the timestamps or whatever, but then I decided to make my own video to show exactly what I need.

Go ahead and watch it in HD. That'd be coooool.

Eh, this doesn't count I guess. I need to find a recent photo of myself. This avatar is for a web video series I'm editing/creating VFX for with a friend.
