F-ZERO works fine without it. But it needs analog triggers for drifting.

Right, but I'm specifically talking about the crap-tons of games that aren't just "A is go, not A is not go", aka Forza, Gran Turismo, Need For Speed, DiRT, ATV vs MX, etc.

How the hell are racing games gonna work (that aren't Mario Kart) where it'd be impossible to play if there's only 0% throttle and 100% throttle (if the triggers aren't analog)? (Think Forza or Gran Turismo)

(The music is fantastic.)

The sticker setup seems to be just the one screen. There might possibly be some type of item you buy or obtain to increase how many 'pages' of stickers you can have (kind of like the different sized wallets you can buy in Ocarina of Time, for example.) It's looking like they may have it similar to the current format where you can hold up to 10 items at a time, but in this case, hold up to a certain amount of stickers with bigger ones obviously taking up more space and making you manage them better for the perfect array (sort of like Brawl's trophy sticker thing).

The only downside to this I'm seeing is what everyone's already mentioned: if your basic attacks are stickers, what happens if you're at a hard boss that requires endurance and good planning and suddenly run out of stickers? Also, it seems that it could slow the place down quite a bit by having to search every single square inch of the levels you visit for stickers, and you'll have to if the game is gonna be based off this system.

They really like the BAHH. NSMB U trailer was filled with it, but apparently it's back full force. I guess they're recycling all of NSMB Wii's music, but... they put the BAHH in the castle music, if you can believe that.

I think the big reliance on coins could make it an interesting, at least somewhat unique experience compared to past NSMB games. I'm questioning how big of a role they actually play in the gameplay, though. What, does Bowser have some sort of machine or plan or something, and the only way to foil it is by collecting a buttload of coins? Do you unlock new levels with a bunch of coins? Why are coins such a big deal in this one? That was what I was thinking.

I think having to stop to collect billions of coins every 4 seconds would interrupt the flow of the game moreso than any other Mario game (especially with Mario's stupid slide he's done ever since NSMB).

I also notice 100 coins still gives you a 1UP. So... 70 lives at the end of World 1?

Lastly, if this is all about coins, presumably there will be leaderboards. Maybe leaderboards for individual levels, but I doubt that. It'll be total coin count, and then you know it'll be broken within a week because someone will find the level with the fastest opportunity for the most coins and play the level over and over and over.

I've noticed that NSMB2 is already following a trend set by MTO: the point system not relying on skill, but on how much time you can sink into the game. Like, yeah, I had several matches with the regional top leaderboard guy "Dragon:3" (82,391 points) on Mario Tennis. I've beaten him 5 out of the 7 times I've faced him. [darn].... is it because I'm insanely good? Not really, he's a moderately decent player; he just does nothing but play Mario Tennis. I could have 82k points too if I did nothing but play. So, same sort of thing I see happening with NSMB2: You'll find leaderboards that won't show level times completed or anything worthy of achievement (and forget statistics), but it'll show total coin count, probably show the top 30 people (or hell maybe just the top guy and that's it like Mario Tennis) and his coin count will be 7.4 million coins.

EDIT: (and for the love of Christ, get rid of the stupid ass BAHH BAHH voice bull[dukar]. I thought they were gonna kill it off, but it was everywhere in the NSMB U trailer)

They should have just called it New Super Mario World. It seems more similar to Super Mario World than Super Mario Bros. I mean, it has the seamless map (judging by LD's post anyway), plus the SMW-esque background style, there's already a New Super Mario Bros. game coming out, there are once again multicolored baby Yoshis/Yoshies and the only other Super Mario World game is Yoshi's Island, which was more a prequel and less a proper sequel or the revival of SMB that these games are.

Calling it NSMW wouldn't work at all. It's got like three SMW elements in it, we'll probably discover some more when it comes out, but they did the same sort of thing in NSMBW as far as nostalgic elements.

Also, idk, I'm pretty sick of the NSMB visual style. Not necessarily the graphics (though, seeing how flat, boring, and similar-looking NSMBU graphically was to NSMBW immediately after witnessing the gorgeous Pikmin 3 made me cringe), but just the cartoony, bright, no depth feel. I quote this game a lot, but it seems DKCR is the only one that did it right.

That needs more views immediately.

EDIT: Just four days after I posted the above sentence, that video skyrocketed from a couple hundred views to almost 80,000.

And all of your wishes were just shattered an hour and a half ago.

I just remembered the first splash page I saw when I discovered this site. I think it was view askew, then just a couple weeks later, it was the drawing of Mario. So.... late '99.

I remember the 20th anniversary splash page, and remember frequenting the site much earlier than that.

I ended up joining:

Date Registered: August 07, 2003, 11:10:03 pm

So, at the moment, I'm creeping up on 9 years.

I remember joining well before the marioguy explosion (which I actually added him on MSN a couple years ago), and I remember making a thread suggesting that TMK should have a chatroom. Some weeks later, iirc, they did end up incorporating that, though, I'm not saying I'm taking credit for the idea. I don't know if it was already in the works and I suggested it around that time by coincidence, or what.

I also remember being a half-op with Meowrik/Forest Guy long ago, but some BS went down with... hmm FrozenSolid/FrozenPantsSolid/whatever? I remember him pestering a lot of us for the longest time, and then all hell broke loose, and we were stripped of our titles.

Lastly..... hmmm, I think I was nominated or whatever for a post I made for the TMK Awards. I forgot who it was that voted for me, and I know it was for the "funniest/best post", but there's no way I'd ever remember what it was unless I wanted to dig it up.

My rating in Mario Tennis Open is currently 9429 points/2585 Rating.

I got matched up with a guy who had 281 points/1986 rating (start with 2000 for Rating, and I think you start with 1000 points), killed him, then the next match I got a guy who was at 0 points/~1400 rating.

Free points are nice, indeed.

THEN I got matched up with a Waluigi net spammer with 20,000+ points/4356 rating and somehow managed to beat him using Mario. FUNTIMES.

Wasn't the online play supposed to make up for there not being an RPG mode?

If it was supposed to, it definitely didn't do the job. A positive thing I can say is that I'm beginning to get more reliable connections during the day. Not much better, but at least not like watching a badly buffering video on Youtube. I think I was just hitting a lucky streak, though. I'm gonna test out a couple other things, and see how the connection is.

My bad.

As far as style, newer 2D Mario games have seemed too flat and too linear. The only thing I can say is that they should make the 2D sidescrollers look on par with Donkey Kong Country Returns. That, to me, set a great standard for how a Mario sidescroller should look as far as its style, how dynamic, deep, organic, and 'alive' it looks and plays, and the infinite amount of variety that doesn't keep you locked to a horizontal, flat, linear plane.

You could cite [Square] as trying to do something similar on SNES with SMRPG. [Rare] always tried to put a ton of detail into the original DKC series, [similar to Square].

Mario Tennis Open online isn't good at all.

Isn't good at all to the point I made a thread about it.
