I think this an excellent case-in-point for the importance for fresh IPs. M&L1's character designs were fresh but the game wasn't a Marioverse game in the first place, so it's likely they were altered just so so they'd mesh with whatever predominate aesthetic was already in situ.

I adore the game; it is to date the most Charlie Nozawa-ish Mario game. But as time draws on, I wish it remained Tomato Adventure 2 and allowed to build its own 'verse. Instead it's just footnote to a bloated franchise.

Of course it wouldn't have sold nearly as well, but that'd been our fault.

Incidentally, Arthur from the G'n'G series is evidently only 28, so I wonder if this is symptomatic of Japan's youth obsession or some kinda esoteric joke. Then both he and Mario share many similarities including G'n'G and SMB being both sidescrollers released in 1985.

Edit: it's probably due to their respective princesses being young. Can't have a creepy age gap!

Has anyone seen the credits for this yet? I'm really interested in what role, if any, Hirokaz Yasuhara played in its development.

And that has to be the most hideous boxart Nintendo has ever put out.

DK is depicted performing in a circus in Donkey Kong Circus (Game & Watch), presumably this is a prequel to Donkey Kong. However as this was an edit of a Mickey Mouse game and not releases domestically it's likely not canon (it wouldn't contradict actual canon so I see no harm in treating it as such)

There was also a vinyl record wherein DK was a zoo animal. Then there's a two volume coloring book wherein DK is once again a circus attraction. Both of these are apparently officially licensed but doubtlessly non-canon. They couldn't even depict Pauline with any consistency.

Re: Bowser and magic. I interpreted him teleporting in SM64 as being a magic ability, a la magikoopa.

PS. Mario being younger than me now is really bumming me out.

Is Billy Puck the name of the ancillary character in question or the name of the detective series he's obsessed with?

I assumed my last lines made it clear that it is the latter (Though, the character in question does go by Billy as a nickname). On that note, Google translate borked up my link. Here's the Yahoo page I meant to link to.

On the topic of if it was a reference, I kinda doubt it. They look similar, but, aside from not being a deerstalker, they also look similar to the famous SH deerstalker. I mean, how many people do you know call it a deerstalker and not a SH hat? Maybe the fact that it's plaid and British-... ish is supposed to evoke a Sherlock Holmes feel.

'Cause people, whether or not they know it's called a deerstalker, know what it looks like without even needing a reference -- two brims and two earflaps (invariably tied at the top). You cannot mess it up even if you're only passingly familiar with SH. It may be that Kawashima intended to evoke SH, but that's not really the point. PM2 gave a character -- a detective wannabe -- a distinctive article (i.e., exact type) of clothing iconic as a cult detective character. For what purpose would they give it to Pennington other than signify his hobby vis-a-vi an establish detective?

FTR, Puck is half-American, half-Japanese (I cannot recall on which matrilineal/patrilineal sides those fall on).

Mario Chat / Obscure manga reference?
« on: October 07, 2014, 05:44:47 PM »
So I picked up a manga called Kingyo Used Books. It's pretty much a manga about manga, yeah. Anyways, there's an ancillary character obsessed with an old detective series called Billy Puck by Mitsuhiro Kawashima, to the extent that he dresses like the boy detective despite being too old. But it was the hat that caught my attention. I coincidentally picked up The Thousand Year Door on a whim, and I noticed Pennington wears the same cap:

It's not a deerstalker so it cannot be a Sherlock Holmes reference. And It doesn't evoke any other influential detective series that I'm familiar with.

There is unfortunately almost no English or Japanese sites dedicated to Billy Puck. Yahoo site is the only page I've found regarding Puck or his creator. But I'm not about to doubt that such a property has a strong cult following there.

Noun

The act of edifying, or the state of being edified; a building up, especially in a moral, emotional, or spiritual sense; moral, intellectual, or spiritual improvement; through encouragement and instruction.
    (archaic) A building or edifice.

Boldening mine.

Mario Chat / Bob Hoskins (1942-2014)

He passed away at the age of 71 due to the ravages of Parkinson's disease.

He'll likely be best remembered as Eddie Valiant from Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, but I'll personally remember him as Mario Mario, a role he despised but nevertheless handled with aplomb.

Rest in peace, plumber. :(

It was based on a hypothesis that only anyone blocked off to the real world could be so obtuse and close-minded. Seeing though that he hasn't refuted the accusation, I'd say I hit the proverbial nail on the head.

Please introduce me to this so-called "cozy gated community." Christians have to face the real world just like everyone else.

Don't be a dick. Seriously, how are we supposed to argue our points if we're just ****ing rude to the opposition?

First of all, when in bloody hell did I include all Christians in my statement? it was directed towards turtlekid.

Secondly, there is no "opposition". I never said I was anyone's team.
