Yeah Trainman is right. Newbie is simply a branching off of the adjective "new" as to make it sound more spunky or cool as to keep up with the sound of the age we live in.

I guess I'm a newbie as well, I joined a while ago and then disappeared. I'm glad Jon made this thread ( Great Idea Jon!! ) it should help ones such as I to get used to the site.
