We don't know if it's a "New Super Mario Bros." yet -- notice the "new" wasn't capitalized in the interview.

I probably should note that Miyamoto just said "Super Mario" (no "Bros.") in the Japanese interview. Also, it's clearer to see in the Japanese text that he said "new" Mario and not "New Mario."

In the latest volume of Iwata Asks: Super Mario 25th Anniversary, Shigeru Miyamoto mentions that he is "making a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Nintendo 3DS system." Though this doesn't exactly come as a surprise, it's nice to have confirmation. No other details were given, but I'd say it's likely that we'll hear more about the game during this year's E3.

Site Discussion / Re: Talkback: Super Mario's Release Date Is Missing!

This is interesting.

Since the US Copyright Office site has a publication date of 1985-10-31 for SMB's instruction booklet, I decided to check out the rest of the NES launch games, and that date came up again for Kung Fu's packaging (registration # VA0000519763) and Pinball's instruction booklet (TX0002242306). Everything else seems to check out, with publication dates on or before 1985-10-18, except for SMB's packaging, which is 1985-10-19.

So why does everyone remember 17 games at launch, when Kung Fu, Pinball, and Super Mario apparently weren't "published" until at least two weeks later?

For those of you that have access to a non-USA All-Stars package, we would like to know the catalog number on the soundtrack CD, as well as the track list. Right now we only have the USA version, so if you have one from any other region, it would help. Please scan 'em or snap a few pics, then post 'em here or e-mail us. As long as the info is readable, we'll credit you on that soundtrack page!

Judging by its copyright date of 1983-2010, this appears to be the DK Original Edition from the special Wii bundles last year. I don't think we should be linking to this.

Site Discussion / Re: They Should Return the Fan Art Section

The SMB Info Station took over our fan art, but then the site went down, and now it's back up at http://koopaprince.tripod.com without fan art.

I guess if there's enough demand, I'll consider starting up a fan art section again.

Since the Macy's ad contradicts what Steven Kent says in his blog, even after he "officially looked into it," apparently Howard Lincoln, Minoru Arakawa, and Howard Phillips all somehow forgot that SMB was available in 1985. Or Kent's records are wrong.

Welcome to the second edition of Warp Zone! Here's another batch of links for your viewing (and listening) pleasure.

Mario Piano Sheet Music (mariopiano.com)
This site is home to sheet music transcriptions of Super Mario Bros. themes and sound effects, complete with optimized fingering for all you ivory ticklers. I've tried most of them out on guitar and they sound dead-on.

GameBard (gamebard.com)
Poetry meets game reviews on GameBard. Since its launch in September, GameBard has reviewed more than 30 games, including New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wario Land: Shake It!, and Donkey Kong Country Returns.

Iwata Asks: Donkey Kong Country Returns (us.wii.com)
Satoru Iwata -- the president and CEO of Nintendo Co., Ltd. -- interviews the three DKCR senior designers from Retro Studios and the producer and assistant producer from the Nintendo side. This is probably the first "Iwata Asks" that they had to translate to Japanese.

Super Mario Galaxy Medley (youtube.com)
Diwa de Leon put together this impressive five-part Super Mario Galaxy medley using six instruments: Violin, hegalong, djembe, tambourine, guitar, and his voice.

They've already conducted The Legend of Zelda and Sonic the Hedgehog marathons, and in a few days, ExtraLives.org will start a Mario marathon to raise money for Free The Children. From December 30th to January 2nd, they plan to play the Super Mario Bros. series, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Land, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, the Mario Galaxy series, Hotel Mario(!), and more. In addition to helping a good cause, a $5 donation will enter you into a raffle for various prizes, so be sure to join the fundraising festivities at ExtraLives.org!

When I'm listening to it, I prefer the original, but when I'm messing around on guitar, I usually throw in the syncopation.
