Game Blog / Welcome to Warp Zone!
« on: September 29, 2010, 10:47:40 PM »
This warp zone isn't a series of pipes -- it's a portal to neat Mario stuff on the Web.

For our first "Warp Zone" article, we have five links that we think you'll enjoy. We might make this a weekly feature, so by all means, please send us comments, suggestions, or links for next time.

How ColecoVision Became the King of Kong (retro.nintendolife.com)
The story of how Coleco scored the Donkey Kong arcade license, told by the guy who did it.

Iwata Asks: Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary, Volume 1 (us.wii.com)
Nintendo of America's Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary website recently added a translation of another "Iwata Asks" interview with Shigeru Miyamoto. This time, EarthBound creator Shigesato Itoi is doing the asking. Unfortunately, there isn't much Super Mario Bros. discussion in this volume.

Super Mario Bros. The Movie Archive (smbmovie.com)
Click over to our newest affiliate for behind-the-scenes video, exclusive interviews, and more info about the Super Mario Bros. movie.

Janitor of the Mushroom Kingdom (brawlinthefamily.com)
Web comics don't get a lot of coverage on TMK, so what better time than now to link to one of my favorites? If you've never read Brawl in the Family, the four-part "Janitor" series of strips is a great introduction to the comic's brand of humor. Also be sure to check out the well done video version of the four strips.

Super stomping in Retro City Rampage (destructoid.com)
Leave it to the upcoming WiiWare game Retro City Rampage to bring us one of the strangest Mario cameos yet. In this gameplay video, an evil-looking, shirtless Mario ("radioactive plumber") gives the main character the ability to stomp on enemies. Look closely, and you can see "GOOMBOUNCES" scroll across the status bar when the player stomps on two enemies in a row.

Some sites are reporting GBA also for the 3DS Virtual Console. I only see GB and GBC on Nintendo's site, but I haven't had a chance to watch the presentation video yet.

Latest News / Mario news from Nintendo's 2010 Conference
« on: September 29, 2010, 03:14:13 AM »
Nintendo's latest conference wrapped up in Japan a few hours ago. Perhaps the most exciting announcement was the confirmation that the Nintendo 3DS will have its own Virtual Console service that will offer classic Game Boy and Game Boy Color games for download. So far, Nintendo's website only shows screen shots for Super Mario Land and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX.

A Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary edition DSi XL was also announced for Japan, and will be released there on October 28.

Nintendo's conference website has new screen shots and release info for 24 upcoming games. Here's a list of the Mario titles along with their Japanese release dates:

3DS:
 * Paper Mario (tentative title) - TBD
 * Mario Kart (tentative title) - TBD

Wii:
 * Mario Sports Mix - 11/25/2010
 * Donkey Kong Country Returns (titled Donkey Kong Returns) - Winter

DS:
 * Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem! (titled Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Assault! Miniland) - 12/2/2010

The Nintendo 3DS will launch in Japan on February 26, while North America will have to wait until sometime in March.

So, Wikipedia already investigated this.

Here's a good recap: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Super_Mario_Bros.#1986_NA_release_date

And here's the Macy's ad from Nov. 17 1985 that TJ Spyke mentioned: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Super_Mario_Bros.#Possible_Confirmation_of_1985_Release_Date

Until NOA reveals whatever proof they have of an October 18, 1985 release, the earliest verifiable date we have is November 17, 1985.

There is also Nintendo saying that the Super Mario series made its debut in 1986 at http://www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/detail/PmV4HM8Q3GOK5Z6J10VSzyaDDg7m-YVF
Thanks for the links. The funny thing about that article saying 1986 is that at the end it links to http://mariobroswii.com, which says 1985 under Extras -> Timeline.

The United States did NOT get the game in October 1985. The exact release date isn't known, but it was released in early 1986 (even Nintendo itself has said it came out in March 1986).
Do you remember the source? I'm looking at two that point to October 1985. NOA's press site says "Originally released on NES, October 18, 1985" for SMB on Virtual Console, and all the SMB-related trophies in Super Smash Bros. Melee say "10/1985," for example: http://themushroomkingdom.net/mariopedia/trophy/goomba.jpg

Yes, and they included SMW. I wonder if that means this'll be SMAS+SMW..?
The official site says no: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/svmj/index.html

That was my first assumption, seeing as that was in that special Japanese version that came out later.
SMAS+SMW only came out in the US and Europe.

Latest News / Super Mario Collection Special Pack website opens
« on: September 13, 2010, 05:39:29 PM »
The official Super Mario Collection Special Pack website (Japanese) has launched with pictures of the packaging, booklet, and CD soundtrack included with the game. The Wii port of Super Mario Collection, which is called Super Mario All-Stars in the U.S., will be released in Japan on October 21 for ¥2,500 (about $30).

Super Mario Collection Special Pack is one of several Mario games that Japanese gamers can register on Club Nintendo for a chance to win special Mario merchandise. To celebrate the Super Mario Bros. 25th anniversary, Nintendo is giving away a total of 2,000 tote bags, 3,000 T-shirts, and 5,000 sets of playing cards. The Super Mario 25th Anniversary Campaign website has pictures of the prizes and more details.

Game Blog / Super Mario Collection Special Pack coming to Japan
« on: September 02, 2010, 01:05:32 AM »
A new Mario game has quietly appeared on Nintendo's Japanese Wii release list: Super Mario Collection Special Pack, dated for October 21. Early reports indicate that Super Mario Collection Special Pack is a port of Super Mario All-Stars (known as "Super Mario Collection" in Japan) and will include a Mario history book and CD soundtrack, all for the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., which launched in Japan on September 13, 1985.

Will they release the game and goodies in North America? Will they fix the reversed brick physics that plagued Super Mario All-Stars? We'll post more info as it develops.

I have WarioWare DIY credits now. WarioWare DIY Showcase credits might be the same, but this hasn't been confirmed.

    * Dr. Mario Online Rx USA
-I have done research into this myself as well as asked the people I know who play this copy the most. None of them have claimed to see any sort of credits roll at any point in time. I looked into the Online Instruction manual for information and found nothing. I would personally conclude this as No Credits Exist.
There are credits on YouTube, but they fast-forwarded through most of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldGYJp__pyo

    * WarioWare DIY
-A friend has a copy and claims that a credits roll is available for viewing at any time. I'll try to get a video recording of the credits ASAP, probably within a couple days.
From what I hear, they are available in the Options Garage once you go through all the tutorials.
