I.E. the cream of the mutilated, butchered shows. Seriously, people (even a lot of "anime fans") don't understand that the term "anime" is incredibly broad. Think of it like we use the term "cartoons". In essence, it's like saying all cartoon shows are the same thing. Of course, everyone knows that isn't true. So why would it be true for another country's output of animation?
Also, there's nothing wrong with a show being "dramatic" (in some cases, I'd say there's nothing wrong with being overdramatic either). It's just usually the result of bad directing or bad voice acting on the part of the English dub team. There are some shows with beautiful English dubs.
Regarding Vid's comment, I'd say 20% is a high estimate. There's tons of anime that never makes it to America.
