General Chat / 6 things you can't live without on a daily basis
« on: September 07, 2006, 11:25:21 PM »
What six things can't you live without on a daily basis?

1. My wallet. Money and license. Need I explain more?
2. My car. I can't leave home without it for obvious reasons.
3. Pencils and a legal pad. Every time I go to class I need these.
4. The newspaper. I read this during down time--local, business, and especially sports (I can't go a day without reading my baseball and football news).
5. Breath mints or gum. I'm OCD about this stuff.
6. A polo shirt. For some reason I seem to wear one every day. I change if I work out or something but nine times out of ten I wear one. 85% are from Abercrombie & Fitch, the others are usually Polo Ralph Lauren.

Game Help / Mario Golf 64
« on: August 28, 2006, 10:50:06 PM »
Well, I was in for a pleasant surprise when I was given a copy of Mario Golf 64. Someone was getting rid of their Nintendo 64 and knew I liked golf, so I now have this game.

Today I sat down with it for the first time. I didn't get a manual with it and I'm clueless about the controls! Does anyone know where I could find a manual for this game or does anyone just know the controls in general?  (I need specific instructions, I am not a natural at games like most of you are and I have to always read the manual to understand how to operate the game, usually more than once if I want to have any shot at success).

Also, who are these characters? Maple and Plum? I've never heard of them before.

I'm looking forward to this game once I get the controls under control!

General Chat / Fast Food
« on: August 26, 2006, 11:48:18 PM »
In the post about Happy Meal toys, many say they don't go to McDonald's much. I don't know why some people like or don't like some places to eat, but I thought I'd share my two cents.

Now I happen to like McDonald's. I also like Long John Silver's, KFC, Subway, and Arby's. Not crazy about Wendy's or Burger King.

My personal favorite is Panera Bread. They have sandwiches, salads, soups, etc. if you're not familiar with them. Also have bagels and muffins for the morning. I used to stop in this place a few times a week for a while; the only reason I don't go as much anymore is because I had a bunch of friends working there and they've all left for their colleges over the past two weeks. Those folks also helped to make it a great experience every time. But Panera, hands down, is my favorite fast food.

Anyone else have a favorite fast food?

Forum Games / Continue the story...

Well folks, this one isn't Mario related, but I thought I'd post a "continue the story" here since it's late and I feel the need to write!

Ryan, Chris, and Zach were seniors at Franklin High School. The three popular, baseball-playing students were above average students and had been best friends since kindergarten.

Although they were the most popular students in their class, all three were single. Zach seemed to go through girlfriends like there was no tomorrow. Ryan, for being so athletic, choked up around girls way too often. Chris never spoke about girls to anyone, not even Ryan and Zach. They thought he was apathetic about dating and girls in general.

Still, the three did not seem to care about this lack of dating. They went to the gym every day before school and talked mostly about baseball.

As winter became spring, everyone was jockeying for a prom date. Ryan, Chris, and Zach still needed dates the week before tickets went on sale.

"Dude, we're not missing senior prom," said Zach one day in the gym.

"Yeah, as hard of luck as we have, we've got to find someone," replied Ryan.

"You got anyone in mind?" asked Zach.

Ryan put the dumbell he was lifting down. "Actually, I am probably going to ask Marie today."

"Are you serious, bro?" replied Zach. "She's so hott."

"Yeah, I know," said Ryan. "Do you still have the hots for that Jen chick?"

The color drained from Zach's face. He let the tricep machine clunk down hard. "Yeah, and I was just thinking of asking her. How in the world did you know?"

"Nate told me," said Ryan. "He mentioned it yesterday at practice."

Trying to change the subject, Zach turned to Chris.

"How about you, Chris?"

"Um, I don't know," said Chris nervously.

"Dude, you've got to ask someone. This is your freaking senior prom!" said Ryan.

"Yeah, I just can't think of any seniors to ask," he said.

"Ask a junior or something," replied Zach. "Just as long as you don't take a freshman. Freshmen are, well, freshmen."

Ryan laughed. "Yeah, freshman girls are like bleeech."

Chris said nothing. He quietly left the workout without his two buddies.

Walking down the hall, Zach and Ryan speculated their friend.

"Dude, what's up with Chris?" asked Ryan. "He never just leaves workout like that."

"I don't know, it's like we offended him with that freshman remark," added Zach.

Ryan paused. "If he asks a freshman, well, let's just say he's not going in our limo."

"Yeah, he's going to have to find his own ride," Zach said.

"He can drive his Volvo, you know," said Ryan.

Meanwhile, Chris had ventured down to Mrs. Anderson's math room. He didn't have her as a teacher. He had already changed out of his workout clothes.

Standing at the doorway, Chris seemed to be waiting for someone. The sounds of a wheelchair could be heard clearly from there. As they got louder, Chris smiled.

"Good morning, Chris," said a female voice.

"Hello, Valerie," replied the center fielder of the baseball team. "How's your leg today?"

"It's fine," she said. "At least when I'm a sophomore next year it will be completely healed. But I'm not letting anything get in my way."

Chris looked at her in the eyes. "You know, I was wondering, if you'd be up to it," he started.

"Up to what? Joining you in the weight room sometime?" she joked.

"No, not that," said Chris. "I do have a life outside of baseball."

Valerie smiled. "I know that. I think I'm the only one who sees that."

"Yeah, so I was wondering, are you free on May 20?"

"I think so," said Valerie. "Isn't that your prom?"

Chris nodded. "Valerie, would you accompany me to the dance?"

Valerie blushed. "Of course I will. I mean, I can't dance, and I know I'm only a freshman, but I'd love to! Yes, me and you, May 20."

OKAY, THIS IS AS MUCH AS I WILL WRITE. You guys can finish this any way you want.

The White Mushroom House / Appraisal, Part II
« on: August 21, 2006, 03:47:50 PM »
Again, I'm not planning on selling any of this stuff, but I just want some idea of what it's all worth.

Nintendo 64, original model (not colored) from 1997 with original box and manual plus original gray controller in very good condition (minimal wear around the control stick area from my hand where the plastic is smooth, but the stick works like the day I bought it).

Blue Nintendo 64 controller with original box, same condition as gray controller.

Red Nintendo 64 controller with original box, same condition as gray and blue controllers.

Memory Card with original box.

Cleaning Kit in original box.

The following games, all in original boxes and with manuals: Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Madden 2000, Triple Play 2000, Tetrisphere

I need a price quote for all of the above items.

Set #2 (which I don't think is worth anything yet but here goes)

Nintendo Game Cube, black model from 2001 with original box and controller, controller in almost new condition

Orange Game Cube controller, does not have original package (which was not a box but rather a hard to open plastic thing that I cut open). In almost new condition, maybe a bit less stiff than black controller (this one is my primary controller).

Memory Card "59", package also missing because of scissor mutiliation but stored in one of my game boxes.

The following games, all in cases with original manuals: Mario Kart Double Dash, MVP Baseball 2004, MVP Baseball 2005, Madden 2003, Madden 2005, All Star Baseball 2002, All Star Baseball 2003 (baseball 2003 game box is slightly imperfect due to damage from my dog).

Site Discussion / Ads
« on: August 20, 2006, 04:13:06 PM »
Until a few days ago, I had no problems using this board. Now I get these ads that won't go away all the time. They say "Planet Network" on them and clicking the bypass button won't get rid of them! It took me about ten tries once!

It only happens sometimes, but it's annoying. Any way to get around this?

Video Game Chat / NES troubleshooting
« on: August 17, 2006, 06:46:36 PM »
My friend was cleaning out and found an old NES that he wanted to hook up. He acted like he hasn't touched this thing since the late 1990s. Anyway, he plugged it in and it has this flashing purple screen.

Specifically, the screen is a light Easter-egg color purple (you know what shade I mean), it flashes on and off, the light on the front of it blinks with it, and no game will load (he's tried four). He also has a cleaning cartridge (which is probably like the one you clean a VCR with) and that apparently did no good.

Since I'm sure a lot of you have some NES experience, maybe even with fixing stuff, any chance this could be an easy fix? He wants it ready to go in a few days so he can take it to college with him.

Also, if it matters, the system has been hooked up with both the cable box and the jacks in the side.

Mario Chat / How did you first hear of Mario?
« on: July 28, 2006, 12:27:59 AM »
I thought this would be an interesting topic on here, especially since my story is a bit unique (at least among people I know around my area).

I had no idea who or what Mario was until the fall of 1990. There were Mario toys being given away with Happy Meals, two of which I still have sitting around somewhere. One was a suction cup Mario that sprang up after a while and the other was a Luigi on a cloud with wings. I think there were two others in that series that I don't have.

I had originally thought Mario was some Saturday morning cartoon until a friend told me it was a video game. Other than a computer the only video game system in my house was an Atari 2600 that my mother had bought in 1982. I asked if it ran on the Atari, and they said that it didn't. But I kept the toys around because I thought they were pretty neat.

The first Mario game I owned or played was Mario Teaches Typing back in 1994. We had this at my school and used it in a class that taught us typing. I wound up buying a copy of it for my computer at home, and I credit it for my keyboarding skills to this day.

Through all these years I never held any sort of Nintendo controller until December 1996 when I played one at a friend's house. We played a baseball game. I'd been playing tee ball since I was a toddler, had been hitting without a tee starting around age four, played competitively, and I found electronic baseball to be challenging yet entertaining.

I got a Nintendo 64 in April 1997. I wasn't supposed to get one. My grandparents were going to take me to Disney World. However, we all got sick right before we were supposed to go. I was fine, but my grandparents were hit hard and were unable to go. They wanted to get me something, and bought me a Nintendo 64 with Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64. I bought Triple Play Baseball shortly thereafter.

I was in fourth grade at the time and was the only guy in the entire class without a Nintendo. I think that's why they got me the system. So on those days I couldn't play ball (if it was raining outside or something, which it did a lot of that summer) I had a Nintendo to play.

The reason I got a Game Cube in 2001 when it came out is because I had Triple Play 2000 and it was getting old and all the rosters had changed, so I wanted a new game with updated ones and new players.

Mario Kart became my stress relief, and also my mom's stress relief.

So that's my story of how I came to know about Mario.

I know a lot of you are more into this stuff, so hopefully you guys have more exciting stories to share!

The White Mushroom House / Appraisal
« on: July 28, 2006, 12:12:48 AM »
I am not looking to sell this, but I am wondering what it may be worth.

I have three original floppy disks for Mario Teaches Typing. They work on the Macintosh and were purchased in 1994. I don't know if they would work on a newer machine or not, but the one I had back then was a "Macintosh LC" (which I have since packed up, it has its original box and everything). Amazingly this was the only Mario game I had until 1997 when I got a Nintendo 64. I also have the manual for this. I don't think I have the box (although I am the only person I know who keeps his Nintendo 64 games in the boxes).

With that in mind, are Nintendo 64 games worth more with boxes and those little cards that begged you to get "Power Nintendo" or whatever the magazine was called?

General Chat / Which of these cars would you drive?
« on: July 24, 2006, 08:54:53 PM »
I'm not sure how many of you folks have cars, but I noticed a severe lack of automobile threads on this board. I decided to create a poll to see what kind of cars you folks like. My favorite on here is the Volvo 850 since I have one. While they might not be Corvettes, they can be pretty powerful if you turbocharge the engine. And they're safe, as nobody has ever died in an 850. They also are good for hauling sailboats, a definite plus for me.

If you drive and your car is NOT on the list, just pick the one you'd most like to have.

Game Help / Mario Kart Double Dash: Need help
« on: July 20, 2006, 12:15:22 PM »
Hi,

I usually use my Nintendo Cube for baseball and football, but I've also been addicted to Mario Kart since the Nintendo 64 version. I've had the new version for a few years now (I got it when it came out by reserving it on Amazon--a rarity for me, since I own very few games) and I like it, but I'm wondering if there's an equivalent to the jump feature that was achieved by pressing "R" on the Nintendo 64 controller. Cornering is a little bit harder without that.

Also, is 150 CC as tough as it it seems? Or am I just not very experienced/good at games? (Aside from baseball and football, I also have Super Mario 64, which I beat after nine years of playing off and on, and I've heard it's a hard game to beat--note that I would go about six months between sessions of playing it so it took me from 1997-2006). On Mario Kart, I've been working on the All Cup Tour at 150 CC for a while now and can't get higher than silver.

Thanks for any help you guys might have.
