Forum Games / The Last Kingdom Standing
« on: May 23, 2003, 09:28:47 AM »
This is a dark and gritty Mario story that is similar in context to Sapphira's "The Prophecy." I hope you enjoy it!

Chapter 1: Domination

Bowser stood on the balcony of his castle, staring down at his troops below. They were busily preparing for yet another invasion of the Mushroom Kingdom. Bowser snorted and looked up at the dark beak sky; it was filled with ominous clouds that seemed to envelop the entire land in misery. Kamek, Bowser's faithful Magikoopa servant, walked up behind the Koopa King and interrupted his tranquility.

"Sir, the tanks and Bob-Omb carriers are ready." Kamek said as he adjusted his blue cloak.

"Good, good. This will hopefully be the last time we have to invade the Mushroom Kingdom. I am fully confident that we will prevail this time!" Bowser said as he motioned down below to his troops.

"That", Bowser said, "Is the ultimate army of destruction. "5000 troops with 500 tanks poised and ready to attack the peaceful citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom. Those pathetic fools think they are completely safe from any of my threats. Well they may have been before, but all that will change in the coming months..."  Bowser said as he placed his clawed hand on Kamek's shoulder.

Bowser bellowed down at the troops below. "Listen my troops. I know you have all been busy for months preparing for this invasion. Well your preperation has paid off. Tomorrow we attack the Mushroom Kingdom and take control of the throne!" The monster's roars seemed to shake the air like thunder as the troops cheered in anticipation for their attack.

---------------------------------------------
Meanwhile, in the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario was visiting Princess Peach Toadstool in her castle.

"I'm so glad you could come and visit Mario." Peach said calmly.

"I'm glad to be here! Look at the sky, isn't it lovely today?" Mario said as the two of them peered out the balcony window of the Princess's room.

"Yes, I love these clear sunny days, it makes me feel so peaceful..." Peach said, as she inched closer to Mario.

Mario coughed slightly and stared at the floor tiles. Peach looked at him, concerned.

"What's wrong?" she asked kindly.

"I don't know. It's just that we've known each other for such a long time, and I feel like our relationship isn't going anywhere. I just want to ask you..." Mario pulled out a small blue box from his pocket; he handed it to Peach, who's crystal-blue eyes widened.

"Yes..." Peach asked nervously. She had anticipated this moment since the first day Mario had saved her from Bowser...

Mario cleared his throat and gluped. "Will you marry me Peach? Please, be my wife."

"Oh yes Mario! I would be so happy to!" Peach leaned in and kissed Mario on the cheek. Mario blushed with embarrassment.

Video Game Chat / Re-designing the GameCube...?
« on: May 02, 2003, 08:33:52 AM »
This article was taken from PlanetGameCube.com:

Editorial: (SP)^3
Jonny looks at whether Nintendo should release an enhanced model for the GameCube, and what the GameCube SP could and should entail if released.
Written: 05/01/2003

It’s no secret that Nintendo isn’t perceived as the coolest company around. Although they’ve made some steps in the right direction, most people, including a great percentage of avid gamers, still consider Nintendo to be, at best, behind the times, and at worst, a mere toy company that isn’t serious about the future of gaming.

The company recently launched a product that may help to turn the tide of public relations. The Game Boy Advance SP combines several much-needed technical improvements with a very classy, compact, and eye-catching makeover. Interestingly enough, the SP was launched at a time when the original GBA was performing quite well, even above expectations for the fiscal year. Nintendo most likely just wants to make the already healthy handheld market even more lucrative.

As soon as the GBA SP was released, people began speculating on the possibility of a similar treatment for the GameCube. Nintendo’s console system has experienced lagging sales and generally poor mainstream reception, despite a great software library and some very capable hardware. Two of the GameCube’s problems, according to its critics, are an unappealing design and lack of extra features like DVD playback and online capability. Though online gaming is a complex issue that requires more than just new hardware to resolve, the other perceived weaknesses could certainly be fixed with a new version of the GameCube hardware.

But should Nintendo bother? If the recent admission of lower-than-expected sales is any indication, absolutely. While the GameCube has a few holes in its game lineup, public image is by far the most prominent factor in the system’s mediocre performance so far. Let’s face it: the GameCube just ain’t cool. I love it to death, but I can’t honestly say that the GameCube is the coolest, sleekest piece of electronics sitting in my living room. It’s not even close. And while some gamers may not care about such a superficial weakness, the “uncool” factor is hurting GameCube, and Nintendo, pretty badly.

Nintendo is working hard on its software lineup and third-party support, but none of that will matter much unless the GameCube can climb out of its image rut. A redesigned version of the hardware, if properly priced and marketed, could do wonders for this platform. Adding a few extra features would help convince those gamers who are mainly sticking PlayStation 2 and Xbox simply because they have more functionality.

So let’s consider what the GameCube SP should do to accomplish its goal. First, it has to be eye-catching. Not in the “Huh?” sense that many people experienced when first seeing the original model, but in the “Sweet!” sense that most of us felt when seeing the first pictures of the GBA SP. The new GameCube should be something that blends in well with other electronic components in a person’s living room or bedroom. It should be sporty and sleek, something adults wouldn’t mind having near their televisions. And, of course, it should still be more or less cube-shaped, in keeping with the name. Balancing these factors would not be an easy task.

In terms of functionality, an obvious choice is DVD playback. Sony and Microsoft have managed to keep piracy quite low despite their stance on this matter, and with GameCube media’s heavy encryption and dissimilarity to normal DVDs, Nintendo should not have too much trouble preventing piracy even with movie playback included.

Another wise addition would be built-in broadband capability. Regardless of whether Nintendo ever allows GameCube to have a decent online presence, the broadband adaptor will soon be an integral part of the system’s extensive networking plans. Setting up a LAN among GameCubes would be even easier if the system didn’t require a separate adapter to connect. Depending on the revised model’s physical design, there could even be room for a modem adapter to fit in or be switched out with the broadband module.

Hard-wiring the Game Boy Player into GameCube SP would be a smart idea. Alternatively, the separate GBP unit could simply be packed in with the system. This feature is less important than the others, but it would certainly help define GameCube SP as the ultimate, comprehensive GameCube model.

The downside to all this remodeling is that it requires a significant investment in design and hardware, and Nintendo might determine that the increase in GameCube hardware and software sales would not justify the investment. But wait…what if part of the work had already been done? It just so happens that a cooler, sleeker, more functional version of the GameCube already exists. It’s called the Panasonic Q, and in addition to its main draw, DVD movie playback, it also happens to look much cooler and more modern than the standard GameCube. For whatever reason, Panasonic has never released the Q outside of Japan and the surrounding region.

It is very likely that Nintendo could buy or license the Q technology from Panasonic, make a few adjustments (such as enabling the standard Game Boy Player and/or packing in a broadband adapter), and produce Nintendo-branded versions for sale across the globe. In large production runs and with newer technology, the enhanced Q could probably be marketed as GameCube SP for $200 USD or less. It sports a silver casing, a striking mirrored face, and light-up controller ports. It plays GameCube games and DVD movies, and it could be modified to include the other features I’ve mentioned as well.

In short, Nintendo has at its potential disposal hardware that could become exactly what the GameCube market needs. Hardcore fans who have clamored for a domestic version of the Q would be thrilled, and most everyone else would think the GameCube SP was designed from scratch to correct the original’s problems, just as the Game Boy Advance SP was. But whether the Q is modified or the GameCube SP really is designed from the ground up by Nintendo, this is a product desperately needed to revitalize the GameCube’s position in the industry.

Video Game Chat / Good news about Spaceworld!
« on: May 01, 2003, 08:57:51 AM »
According to Nintendojo.com and Gamespot, Nintendo is bringning back Spaceworld this year! The article taken from Nintendojo.com is posted below:

Spaceworld is BACK
According to a Gamespot article that confirms our previously reported Pilotwings story, Nintendo's own annual summer show, Spaceworld, will be returning to Japan this August.

In a bizzare move that had Nintendo cancelling last year's show, this return only doubles up with the Factor 5/Pilotwings story to make for quite the "good news day".

YEEEEIIIIIPEEEEE! This is great news indeed! Now Nintendo doesn't have to waste time going to E3 and worry about what their competitors (Sony and Microsoft) will be showing...

I think Microsoft has their own gameing expo also, called the Xbox Odyssey Tour.

Mario Chat / News on Mario Kart for GameCube!
« on: April 26, 2003, 06:54:47 AM »
I just went to n-archives.com and found a bunch of new information on the GameCube Mario Kart game, tentatively titled Mario Kart: Double Dash...

The following news is taken directly from n-archives.com:

Gamers have been anticipating the new Mario Kart to be revealed at E3, but Nintendo spilled the beans and leaked out a bunch of information to the press early. This new Mario Kart, dubbed Mario Kart Double Dash, is bringing a bunch of new features to the classic Mario Kart formula and makes use of the GCN's power with next-generation graphics.
Nintendo has revealed the playable characters. Note that this may not be a final list and more characters may appear in the game. Sonic is nowhere to be found on this list, and Toad is surprisingly absent.

Mario
Luigi
Peach
Baby Mario
Baby Luigi
Yoshi
Birdo
Wario
Waluigi
Donkey Kong
Diddy Kong
Bowser
Bowser Jr.
Koopa
Paratroopa
Daisy

Double Trouble
Each character will be able to team up with another. That's right, there's two people per vehicle. One character will control the steering and acceleration, while the other will control weapons. This is a brand new schematic to the Mario Kart formula. Each character will have 8 unique weapons and 6 standard ones, meaning that the dozens of possible combinations should warrant some extra replay value.

Another small addition is that each character has their own distinct vehicle. No more different colored karts, here. Donkey Kong, for example, has a barrel with wheels to ride on, and Bowser's ride is appropriately grim. Mario has his own blue and red buggy with the signature 'M' plastered on the front. Judging from the available screenshots, there will be several new additons track-wise as well. One screenshot looks like Delfino Plaza from Super Mario Sunshine, although it has not been confirmed. LAN Play will also be introduced for the first time in the series. That means that you'll be able to hook up two GameCube's with two tv's, with two copies of the game. Hopefully the net code will allow for online play, although online play will most likely not be offered by Nintendo themselves. Of course, one-console multiplayer will be supported as well. We'll have more on Mario Kart: Double Dash for GameCube as it breaks.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With all the new additions and LAN supported play, this new Mario Kart game is going to be GRRRRREAT!

Video Game Chat / Graphical "toon shading" seems popular...
« on: April 17, 2003, 06:48:56 AM »
With the recent release of Zelda: The Wind Waker, I think it would be very interesting to see "toon shading" (also known as "cel-shading") in other Nintendo games. Super Smash Bros, in toon shading would look nice...very nice. Or maybe a new Mario game that has a distinctive cel-shaded look... What do you think?

Video Game Chat / Possible Namco and Sega merger...
« on: April 17, 2003, 05:31:59 AM »
I just went to Nintendojo.com, where I read an interesting news article about a possible merger between Namco and Sega... The article is posted below:

Reports have been filtering through that Namco Corp.(renowned for franchises like Soul Calibur and PacMan) has approached Sega with a comprehensive merger proposal. Transpired below is the official words from our sources below.

Looking to the future, Namco allegedly believes that joining forces with Sega would allow it to remain competitive in the videogame industry, according to the publication. Both Namco and Sega have a strong focus on home and arcade videogame development as well as amusement facility businesses. Additionally, intellectual assets would be combined between the two companies, meaning that such a deal could very well result in seeing our favorite Sega characters as guest stars in a future Soul Calibur title.
In its proposal, Namco reportedly has calculated estimated sales of nearly three billion dollars when combined with Sega, which would boost it to the number one position in Japan over Konami's current billion sales total. According to Nikkei, the proposal also states that Sega would remain as the surviving entity, thus the Namco label would most likely disappear under the Sega brand. The entire deal could, if approved, be carried out as soon as 2004.

Today's news, though unconfirmed, could mark the second entity interested in merging with Sega, the first being Sammy Corp. of Japan in an announcement made last February. A possible third company has also recently expressed interest in joining forces with Sega, but in a more limited scope. U.S.-based publisher Electronic Arts is reportedly interested in taking a stake in Sega's software development operations and playing a financial role on the marketing side of things.

In response to this latest Namco proposal, Sega has called a board meeting for next Wednesday to discuss its options in merging with either Sammy or Namco, or in partnering with Electronic Arts in some capacity. A decision is said to be coming as early as the end of this month.

Certainly, times are changing when you see Japanese companies like Square and Enix, and now Namco and Sega, partnering up so as to not be pushed out of the software race by larger companies like Electronic Arts. Wheteher or not this will provide Nintendo with more or less support, in the long run, remains to be seen. Stay tuned.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If this is true, then that would be one of the biggest mergers since Square merged with Enix! It would be really interesting to see different mascots from Namco and Sega games together (Sega's Shinobi starring in Namco's Soul Calibur fighting games, for instance...or Sonic and Pac-Man in a platformer).

Mario Chat / The voice of Mario: Charles Martinet
« on: April 10, 2003, 12:21:06 PM »
You folks will probably never believe this...

A few months ago, I was looking up information about voice-acting careers (in cartoons, video games, etc.). I e-mailed Charles Martinet about this subject (voice-acting)...and he personally replied to my letter! He told me that if voice acting is what I am interested in, then I should go for it, and never let anyone get in the way of my goals and dreams!

And get this:
Charles Martinet told me that he didn't even audition to be the voice of Mario. He actually went to the auditions by mistake! He told me that he LOVES doing the voices in Mario games, he said that it is his favorite type of work.

Video Game Chat / PlayStation fans need to realize...
« on: April 09, 2003, 07:53:28 AM »
PlayStation fans can be so naive sometimes. They think Nintendo should fail, leaving Sony to rule the gaming industry forever...

Well, I bet many of them don't realize that Nintendo helped Sony create the PlayStation. The PlayStation was originally planned to be a CD adaptor for the Super NES, that would allow it to play CD-ROM games and music CDs...kind of like a Sega Saturn. Nintendo eventually backed out of the deal, leaving Sony to further develop the PlayStation by themselves...

So, without Nintendo's idea, Sony's PlayStation wouldn't even exist! Kind of ironic, don'tcha think?

Video Game Chat / Obsessed with Nintendo...?

We at TMK are probably the only bunch of people who are obsessed with Nintendo. Most people these days would buy a PlayStation system simply because of its popularity and CD/DVD extras...

You don't have to reply to this topic if you don't want to... I'm simply making a boring point.

Video Game Chat / Why call it Game Boy?
« on: March 25, 2003, 12:15:02 PM »
I think Game Boy is a silly name to call a gaming system. It kind of gives the impression that it's a system designed for children, which is NOT true at all! I think Nintendo should rename their next handheld system...

Maybe call it "Pocket-N"
