Video Game Chat / New Revolution news!
« on: October 26, 2005, 06:47:26 PM »
This article was taken from Nintelligent.net:

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has announced that the company is planning a simultaneous global release for its next-gen system, the Revolution. Nintendo's DS system also had an odd release, launching in the U.S. before its home country of Japan. The Revolution will not be until at least the next fiscal year, which begins in May 2006.

Iwata goes on to say that the Revolution will be a "complete failure" if it does not sell better than the GameCube, which is to date about 18.76 million units.

Be sure to keep an eye out for more Revolution details

---------------------------------------
Nintendo is planning a global launch like Microsoft is doing with the Xbox 360? It's a risky move.

I am a bit concerned over that comment Iwata said that the Revolution would be a "complete failure" if it does not sell better than the GameCube. Does this mean that if the Revolution fails, then Nintendo will quit the console market? Oh please God, let it not happen!

Video Game Chat / Sony PSP price finally revealed! Official announcement!
« on: October 27, 2004, 07:41:34 PM »
This article was taken from PSInext.com (the article was linked to the Sony Computer Entertainment website).
_____________________________________

THE ARTICLE:
Sony Computer Entertainment today announced that the PSP (PSP-1000) will hit retailers on December 12, 2004, at a recommended Japanese retail price of 19,800 yen excluding tax (20,790 yen including tax).

As shown on the official PSP website, the handheld will be available in two very affordable packages; standard and value. The standard pack will retail at 19,800 yen ($185) and will include the handheld itself, an AC adapter and a battery pack. The value pack, on the other hand, will retail for 5,000 yen more at 24,800 yen ($232), and will include the handheld itself, an AC adapter, a battery pack, a 32MB Memory Stick Duo, a set of headphones with a remote control, and a soft case & hand strap.
Accessories will be readily available via retailers at the following prices: 32MB Memory Stick Duo and headphones with remote at 2,800 yen each ($26), carrying case at 2,000 yen ($19), additional rechargeable batteries at 4,800 yen ($45), and a spare AC adapter can be purchased at 3,500 yen ($33). (pictures)

To our delight, the battery life has finally been outlined, with Sony explaining that the handheld's rechargeable Lithium Ion battery will last for four to six hours for gameplay, and of four to five hours for movies. It’s important to note that these figures have been listed as ‘averages’, meaning that depending on how well optimized the software running on the PSP is, the battery life could be greater or less.

---------------------

MY OPINION:
Well I am very impressed that Sony FINALLY set an official price for the PSP (in Japan). $185 is not bad at all for a system which most people were expecting to sell over $250... I am glad that the PSP is priced within the $150-$200 range, because anything over that would be too expensive...

I am dissappointed with the PSP's battery life. 4 to 6 hours (average) of game time is not good at all, especially if you plan on taking the PSP on a long road trip. The Nintendo DS battery life is fortunately much longer, 6 to 10 hours.

Hopefully, Sony will release a more powerful battery in the future, because I would hate to be playing my PSP and suddenly have the battery die.

Video Game Chat / Halo 2 hype... insane!
« on: October 19, 2004, 02:32:43 PM »
I am amazed by how much Halo 2 is being hyped right now. There have already been over 1.5 MILLION pre-orders for Halo 2... This is a record-breaking event, even though I detest all things related to Halo and Xbox.

Congratulations goes out to Microsoft for hyping the Halo franchise so much... Of course, I'm being sarcastic.

What's the deal with this Halo/Xbox hype? Why can't people just enjoy the good Nintendo and PlayStation games...?

Video Game Chat / Nintendo DS game footage!
« on: October 11, 2004, 12:25:35 PM »
Go to Gamespot.com to see new Nintendo DS game footage.

I downloaded a video for Metroid Prime: Hunters, and it looks incredible! The graphics are amazing, with very detailed environments and sweet lighting effects. The game runs very smoothly, with no slowdown at all. The 4 player wireless battles will be very cool!

I also downloaded a video for Super Mario 64 DS. That game is going to be so much fun! There are many new features that are improved upon the original game, such as the obvious 4 player battle modes. But you can also switch between Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Wario while playing the single-player mode! Super Mario 64 DS has amazing graphics, that really show off the power of the Nintendo DS. The game has very detailed environments and everything runs very smooth, with no slowdown at all! Super Mario 64 DS has NEW LEVELS and NEW ITEMS that will add to this already fantastic game!

I am so anxious to get a Nintendo DS! Only a few more weeks until November 21...

I just went to Nintelligent.net and found a lot of new Super Mario 64 DS images! The graphics have been improved since we last saw the game at E3... It also looks like there will be NEW LEVELS! One of the images shows Yoshi fighting a giant Goomba King (like the one in Paper Mario).

One million game decks have been shipped around the world since the launch of the N-Gage platform eleven months ago. Combining a pocketable gaming platform with powerful smartphone features, the N-Gage gives gamers a chance to experience mobile multiplayer gaming in a revolutionary way.

Video Game Chat / The new redesigned PS2...
« on: September 27, 2004, 12:51:33 PM »
Have you seen the new redesigned PS2 yet? Sony announced it a few days ago at their PlayStation website, and it looks very sweet.

The new PS2 model is about the size of a PSone, which is obviously very small. It is much thinner than the current PS2 model, and it has a flip-top disk tray like the PSone.

The new PS2 also has a built-in Ethernet port for online games, which means we no longer need to buy that clunky Network Adaptor anymore! Yay!

The new PS2 will be released in November for the current price of $149... I wish Sony would drop the price to about $100, since the PS2 is over 4 years old aready...

I must... get... the new... PS2...

General Chat / Disney compared to DreamWorks...
« on: June 19, 2004, 07:28:01 PM »
Dreamworks is starting to rival Disney as a high-quality animation company.

Their successful animated movies include:
* The Prince of Egypt
* Shrek
* Shrek 2

Disney has been making animation ever since the 1920's, so they obviously have more experience... However, Dreamworks is very talented, and they have a lot of potential.

Which company do you like better?

Video Game Chat / Great Nintendo news!
« on: June 01, 2004, 12:31:01 PM »
Sales data taken from www.nintelligent.net

Tuesday, June 1 2004 - Nintendo has released some official sales figures for their major software titles of 2003, and without further ado, here they are, listed as:

Game title / System / Total sales worldwide in 2003 / Total Sales Worldwide Overall.

Pokemon Ruby / Sapphire / GameBoy Advance / 6.12 million / 12.78 million
Mario Advance 4:SMB 3 / GameBoy Advance / 2.59 millions / 2.59 million
Mario Kart Double Dash!! / GameCube / 3.58 million / 3.58 million
Mario Party 5 / GameCube / 1.64 million / 1.64 million
Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker / GameCube / 1.31 million / 3.33 million

Nintendo has also reveled all-time sales figures for some of their most popular franchises. It would appear that Nintendo does not consider any of the Pokemon side games for the GC or N64 to be official parts of the series; at least the sales are not included as such.

Super Mario series
Handheld: 9 titles, 54 million copies
Console: 10 titles, 102 million copies
Total: 174 million copies

Legend of Zelda series
Handheld: 5 titles, 12 million copies
Console: 7 titles, 30 million copies
Total: 42 million copies

Donkey Kong series
Handheld: 7 titles, 15 million copies
Console: 10 titles, 28 million copies
Total: 43 million copies

Pokemon series
Handheld: 11 titles, 91 million copies

Video Game Chat / I just played one of the coolest PC games...
« on: May 30, 2004, 04:11:38 PM »
Halo. Yes, the original Xbox game is now on Windows PC, and I played it. Unfortunately my graphics card is terrible. I have an older NVIDIA graphics card, and I desperately need to update my computer.

Even with the slow graphics card, i was still able to get a decent amount of graphics... the graphics on my PC are worse than PS2! Oh well.

I tried the online multiplayer mode, and it was fun, until I kept getting killed by a bunch of guys running around the game map.

Halo is an amazing game, and it is worth the money to buy an Xbox just for this game (along with Project Gotham Racing, Rallisport Challenge, and a few other Microsoft games)! I can't wait until Halo 2 is released this November, it is going to be awesome!

Video Game Chat / Microsoft's new videogame game strategy... HA!
« on: May 21, 2004, 05:53:38 PM »
I found a large article at www.xboxaddict.com that talks about Microsoft's new strategy for the videogame industry. Apperantly, Microsoft wants to use it's newly-created XNA developing software to create a huge network of cross-compatible games. Meaning that a game on Xbox would also work for Windows and mobile devices.

Here is the article:

When Microsoft announced XNA back at GDC, you could hear a collective groan from the assembled hacks as the stark realisation clanged like a thousand lead balloons that the Xbox 2 wasn’t going to be revealed after all. What did we get instead? XNA. XNA? More like [wtd].

But, as it turns out, the Redmond-based behemoth was up to its world domination plans once again, and more than a little coy with its vision, as an interview with J Allard last week proved conclusively.

Far from being the suspected re-marketing and re-branding of the DirectX set of middleware tools for PC, Mobile and Xbox, Microsoft has explicit plans to leverage these tools into a something far more ambitious than a mere games console that retails for £299 at launch and plays occasionally cool next gen titles. It wants to create the entire standard of gaming across every platform. Scratch that. It wants to own the entire standard of gaming across every platform. This isn’t about warring between incompatible standards, it’s about creating a standard - a VHS-standard of ubiquity. Don’t think 3DO, think DVD. This is, after all, one of the biggest companies in the entire world, and it wants your money.

Microsoft is essentially bored with the current obsession surrounding console cycles, and the obsolescence that happens every five years. It likes the way the film industry does things - the way that grand old business manages to seamlessly project movies into every conceivable corner of the market, from the box office to the handheld and every point in between. It wants gaming to follow the lead of the movies, and coin in the bucks that having invisible standards brings. The consumer doesn’t care about the technology when they watch a film, and Microsoft wants the same to apply to videogaming. Hence its point blank refusal to talk about Xbox 2 to date. It wants to talk about the software. It’s all about XNA, and only now is the industry waking up to its colossally ambitious plans. It doesn’t want to foist you to buy one incompatible device, but it does want gamers to enjoy a gaming ’universe’ across a multitude of devices - all complying to the XNA standard, natch. And would it be happy for those devices to be made by companies other than itself.

As Allard points out, gaming is the only major form of electronic entertainment that doesn’t offer consumers choice. The 3DO model of providing a reference console design and allowing rival manufacturers to make their own was, he asserts, "ahead of its time". Of course, there would still be a Microsoft version of its console, but the company wants others to join in. Panasonic, Toshiba, JVC, Sharp? Maybe even Sony? Stranger things have happened.

But it’s even bigger than just talking about XNA powered next gen consoles. Clearly Microsoft has designs on just about every niche you could squeeze this into. Handhelds, desktop PCs, laptop PCs, airport terminals, mobile phones, PDAs, the list goes on. It really does hurt the brain to think about how far reaching this whole plan is - it’s essentially its Windows equivalent for games. An OS for gaming, if you will.

Can it succeed? Usually Microsoft ****s things up at least a couple of times in amusing fashion before it eventually works out a better way of doing things, and it’d be beyond foolish to imagine that the company will steal a march on its rivals just yet.

As even Allard himself confesses, "I think it would be very hard to tap into the next gen, but you can start sneaking up on it". And that’s exactly what it’ll do. Sneak like Sam Fisher through the shadows of gaming and stealthily snatch pieces of the market until it has it by the neck where it wants it.

But it won’t be easy. Certainly, the power of the PlayStation brand is a major stumbling block for Microsoft, as is Nintendo’s dogged innovation and loyal following. No one said any of this would be a stroll - but at least it’s thinking of a different way of doing things rather than just following the thoroughly predictable model of making a more powerful machine. The differentiators just aren’t there anymore - the generational leaps don’t have the impact they once had.

Microsoft knows more than ever that the 5G consoles will be much of a muchness for the end user, with similar power, similar graphics and broadly similar games. It needs to think of a different tactic, and XNA appears to be its Trojan Horse to the end user and the elusive mass market that everyone talks about, but very few ever get anywhere near - at least not in the way that the movie industry does every single day. Even the mighty GTA, The Sims and Half-Life play out to puny audiences compared to the top-rated forms of mass entertainment, whatever the masters of spin conjure with their impressive financial reports, which only serve to remind us how bloody expensive games really are.

The way Allard tells it, this is all about the masses. A vision that follows the film industry’s example and leverages XNA to become the gaming equivalent of DVD. He’s brimming with excitement about the possibilities of inter-compatible gaming universes ’projected’ onto all manner of XNA-compatible gaming devices both big and small. Halo everywhere, more or less. It’s a big aim, but one you have a hunch that Microsoft could pull off, given time. This motion towards a de-facto standard for gaming is "inevitable for the industry," Allard says, as confidently as ever. "Is that a 30-year inevitability or a three-year inevitability? It’s probably closer to the latter," he asserts. Time will tell, but somewhere between the two extremes seems like a fair guess.

============================================

Do you think Microsoft is being a bit too OBSESSIVE with their videogame plans? I mean having Microsoft games that play on all consoles (including PlayStation and Nintendo) is really rediculous. It's almost like Microsoft wants to dominate the entire videogame industry with their own products! (Well, that is what they want!)

Ugh, now I am completely sick of Microsoft and their videogame plans. They are moving their business into new forms of entertainment that they hope to eventually dominate (first PC's and the internet - now videogames and online gaming).

When will Microsoft's domination plans end?

Thankfully, Nintendo and Sony are taking a more modest look at the videogame industry... I am so glad I never bought an Xbox. Microsoft does not need to dominate the videogame industry, they have enough problems with the PC industry...

Stupid Microsoft...

Video Game Chat / Microsoft and Nintendo may actually beat Sony...
« on: May 18, 2004, 09:36:39 AM »
I think Sony's PlayStation systems will eventually become less popular. Here are my reasons why:

More people are buying Xbox Live than PS2 online. More game companies are supporting Xbox Live (now EA Sports). Microsoft is also adding a ton of new features to Xbox Live (including video messaging).

The Nintendo DS is getting more respect than Sony's PSP. Nintendo is getting a lot of third-party support for the DS (over 100 game companies). Nintendo is making the DS easy to program, hence the name "Developer System". The DS also uses cheap-to-produce game cards, which means more games will be made for the DS! The Nintendo DS has more innovative features than Sony's PSP (touch screen capabilities, wireless networking, dual-screen displays, longer battery life).

Nintendo and Microsoft have said that they will cooperate more with game developers in order to make better games. Nintendo and Microsoft have also said that they will listen more to consumers (finally!).

I am really excited to see what the future holds for both Nintendo and Microsoft. With the amount of support they are getting, both companies may become more popular than Sony's PlayStation!
